It's like being in love
You rob your own mind and defile your bed
You ignore the fate of the players
Who both end up dead

And you pretend for us and you pretend for them
This fairytale will make them jealous of you

But it's not the kind, the kind that you talked about
And it's just the kind that rips the clothing off your mind
She is feeding you and you lie with her
And for the first time your right arm becomes useful
As you sin with it, you wanna cut it off
But instead you thank God for all of the wrong you do

But it's not the kind, the kind that you talked about
And it's just the kind that rips the clothing off your mind
And she is feeding you and you lie with her
And for the first time your right arm becomes useful
As you sin with it, you wanna cut it off
But instead you thank God for all of the wrong you do

You cut the cord today with God's hand to hold yours steady
He waits for you to apply the pressure
The warmth of His breath wrapped in His words
As He repeats His truth after truth after truth after truth

But it's just the kind, the kind that you talked about
And it's just the kind that clothes your mind with Christ
He is feeding you and you know the truth
And I pray this is the last song I will sing to you

A it's just the kind, the kind that you talked about
And it's just the kind that clothes your mind with Christ
He is feeding you and you know the truth
And I pray this is the last song I will sing to you

Im sorry Father, Im sorry sister
Im sorry brother, Im sorry Father
Im sorry Father, Im sorry sister
Im sorry brother, Im sorry everybody

    Song Meaning

Actually. This song is about money. Its explained in the cd. "She" is money. On the cd thing it says "people fall madly in love with money and rob their minds to serve her" Lacey also says in the song something like "you cant serve God and money, you have to choose one or the other." I hope it makes sense to everyone now, sexual inmorality was pretty off. =]

I think it's about the lengths people go to in order to get what they want. In a consumer-driven society, we're all pretty selfish and it's easy to get caught up in scandals. Even the great pastors have fallen from this... I think this is sort of what the song is about. Also in the story of the booklet it's saying how one of the great Passerby soldiers fell to the Dead Army but is now restored. I think it's a weird message about hope... like no matter how deep you get pulled into with something... no matter how much your right arm offends you, God can clothe you with truth again and restore you kind of thing.

    My Interpretation

I think this song is about drugs and prostitution, because of certain phrases, and when she says 'well, you thought wrong you can't serve god and money, you serve one or the other'

'it's like being in love you rob your own mind, and defile your bed, you ignore the fate of the players who both end up dead' you love the drug, defile your bed, and let's not forget HIV.

'YOu pretend for us and you pretend for them, this fairytale will make them jealous of you' you pretend that you are fine to your loved one, and 'ya know, pretend for everyone else.

'But it's not the kind, the kind you talk about, and it's just the kind that that rips the clothing off you mind' obviously metaphoric. (the love no one needs to know about)

'She is feeding you and you lie with her, and for th first time your right arm becomes useful, as you sin with it, you want to cut it off, but it's then you thank god for all the wrong you do'. SHE is feeding you narcotics, so you lie with 'her' (could mean anything really), use you arm to do lots of things including using drugs, insert bible reference and cutting reference, you thank god for the bittersweet escape, (this person still worships god).

The bridge is kinda simple, you cut the cord and turn to god for help, which is exactly what Lacey Sturm did.

'I'm sorry father, I'm sorry sister, I'm sorry brother, I'm sorry EVERYBODY!' the lack thereof mention of a mother makes me think mommy introduced the person to the addiction and maybe prostitution as well.

    My Interpretation

I think the song is a metaphor that likens sexual immorality to the love of money ("It's like being in love"). Both lead to death (“You ignore the fate of the players/ Who both end up dead”). The person falls victim to the love of money, becoming a slave to it, in the first half of the song. Then the person turns from it in the latter half and turns to God. “The Kind” refers to the kind of love.

    My Interpretation

I believe the use of the metaphor of fornication, specifically masturbation and co-dependency, are referring to the spiritual adultery that takes place when we replace the one true God for the idol of money. It is all using others for our own personal gain, and in the end, we are merely playing with ourselves in the the quest for material prosperity rather than seeking the kingdom of heaven and its righteousness. The lyrics assume an understanding of adultery and fornication as disgraceful and links them directly to the love of money.

I think this song is about sexual addiction, and overcoming that addiction with Christ.

radioinahole, I think the meaning of "your right arm becomes useful" becomes clear when you put it into the context of the words surrounding it:

"You lie with her, and for the first time your right arm becomes useful, as you sin with it..."

the right arm thing...is based on what Jesus said: if your right arm causes you to sin, cut it off, coz it's better to go to heaven with one arm than to be in hell with both. and yeah, this song's about sexual imorality

I like the idea that this is about sexual imorality, because I think it's great message. But I think it's about something else. There are some spoken words before the "you cut the chord today..." that say: "well then you thought wrong, because you can't serve God and money. You am serve one or the other."

Perhaps the "her" that the song talks about is supposed to be money. People think that it will make you happy, but it doesnt really.

Either way, this is a great song with a great message. It might be one of my favorites on the cd.

I completly agree with WhisperTOaScream. I too am a cutter and I am ashamed for betraying my Father, brothers, and sisters. Everytime i listen to this song, I think twice about pulling out my blade. Thank you Flyleaf <3!

You guys all have amazing points, and it made me think of the song differently. As well as I may think even Lacey would very much agree with you, my own personal opinion is different. We all connect with artists on levels only we know and only we, individually, can understand. I have connected with Lacey on the level of darkness, because that is what I see in her and her songs. Darkness, and recovery. And I think that's what this song is about.

"It's like being in love/ You rob your own mind/ And defile your bed/ You ignore the fight of the players who both end up dead/ And you pretend for us and you pretend for them/ This fairytale will make them jealous of you."

That does sound like a sexual reference. But the term "and for the first time, your right arm becomes useful/ as you sin with it, you want to cut it off/ but instead you thank God for all of the wrong you do." That part got me to think. I myself am a cutter, and I've picked up on MANY things in Flyleaf songs to hint that Lacey is/was a cutter too. I think maybe only cutters could understand this, but, when you have a secret so dark like that, you literally fall in love with it. I think, at least in my opinion, it's about just that. Falling in love with the dark secret. She wants to cut off her right arm because of how she sins, how God wouldn't want her to cut, but she ends up cutting and thanking God for an outlet, something that she loves as much as taking a blade to her wrist. It's a strong kind of love, one you can't help, like loving a human being. That's what I take from it.

@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

No Surprises
Radiohead
Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Plastic Bag
Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it. “I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
