Its like being in love you rob your own mind and defile your bed
You ignore the fate of the players who both end up dead
And you pretend for us and you pretend for them
This fairytale will make them jealous of you

But its not the kind, the kind you talked about
And its just the kind that rips the clothing off your mind

She is feeding you and you lie with her
And for the first time your right arm becomes useful
As you sin with it you wanna cut it off,
But instead you thank god for all of the wrong you do.

But its not the kind, the kind you talked about
And its just the kind that rips the clothing off your mind

She is feeding you and you lie with her
And for the first time your right arm becomes useful
As you sin with it you wanna cut it off
But instead you thank god for all of the wrong you do.

You cut the cord today with God's hand to hold yours steady
He waits for you to apply the pressure
The warmth of His breath wrapped in His words
As He repeats His Truth after Truth after Truth after Truth
And its just the kind the kind you talked about and its just the kind
That clothes your mind with Christ
He is feeding you and you know the truth
And I pray this is the last song I will sing to you
I'm sorry Father, I'm sorry sister, I'm sorry brother, I'm sorry everybody.

My Interpretation:I think the phrases about the right arm are not about masturbation, but referring to jerking someone else off (in this case the "she" of money/greed). The lyrics sounds like the person is still in bed with "her" at that time.

Also, I originally thought this was about the falsity that many sexual gay relationships can bring (two women using their right arms). That seemed to also be implied in Missing (found something sweet on the island with the daughters of Eve/but through thick and thin they've gone away and only left their grief).
This is NOT SAYING IT'S HOMOPHOBIC, but a lot of homosexual relationships (especially in the young) are together because of sexual reasons or for wanting attention. And often the sex is not what they really wanted afterall (as you sin with it you wanna cut it off) but they can't get out they're too insecure or just like the sexual feelings too much (but instead you thank God for the wrong you do).

Seeing the other comments, I do like the idea that money is being compared to lust (her/she being money). I didn't understand the spoken quote before that. It's definitely not about self injury. I don't know where people got that.

My Interpretation:I think this song is about drugs and prostitution, because of certain phrases, and when she says 'well, you thought wrong you can't serve god and money, you serve one or the other'

'it's like being in love you rob your own mind, and defile your bed, you ignore the fate of the players who both end up dead' you love the drug, defile your bed, and let's not forget HIV.

'YOu pretend for us and you pretend for them, this fairytale will make them jealous of you' you pretend that you are fine to your loved one, and 'ya know, pretend for everyone else.

'But it's not the kind, the kind you talk about, and it's just the kind that that rips the clothing off you mind' obviously metaphoric. (the love no one needs to know about)

'She is feeding you and you lie with her, and for th first time your right arm becomes useful, as you sin with it, you want to cut it off, but it's then you thank god for all the wrong you do'.
SHE is feeding you narcotics, so you lie with 'her' (could mean anything really), use you arm to do lots of things including using drugs, insert bible reference and cutting reference, you thank god for the bittersweet escape, (this person still worships god).

The bridge is kinda simple, you cut the cord and turn to god for help, which is exactly what Lacey Sturm did.

'I'm sorry father, I'm sorry sister, I'm sorry brother, I'm sorry EVERYBODY!' the lack thereof mention of a mother makes me think mommy introduced the person to the addiction and maybe prostitution as well.

General Comment:It is not about masturbation. Nowhere in bible it is about masturbation. So, it's about money. Cqfd

General Comment:The "and for the first time your right arm becomes useful" always seemed to me to be the usefulness of his right arm when cuddling after "lying with her"... which still applies the Bible verse in Matthew which refers to cutting off the right arm

General Comment:Definitely about breaking out of a lifestyle of vice of some sort with the help of god. I think it's up to each listener to determine that for themselves. My take on "your right arm becomes useful" was always that he had been "masturbating" until he found "her" and began committing "sins"... a prostitute or something. I think prostitution because of defiling the bed, the fantasy and pretending etc.

This song has one of my favourite techniques though, where they modify the chorus so that's it's not just the same thing sung over and over. It shows a progression to the plot and keeps it fresh.

General Comment:i think when she wrote this she was thinking about how loving money is a sin but she wrote so that it could be relatable to everyone. every sin can take a hold of you. i think she wanted to give people hope that they're the only ones who feel trapped.

General Comment:ahhh, great lyrics, great singer, great metaphor, great creativity. which is usually why i actually take the time to type this about such a worthy song.

i love how clever lacey is with comparing the sin of fornication and greed; i thought it was too good to be true when she said at the beginning "it's like being in love". just using the word at the very beginning usually implies that it's not what the song's about. it's the art of mystery and intrigue. which is also reason why misinterpretation happens, yet she interrupts soon enough at 1:15 and it's explained. that was a very nice choice, because if you weren't paying attention, you wouldn't hear / include that in your interpretation of the song.

i used to be a noob at understanding lyrics, and mostly i just admitted to myself i was confused. yet from reading posts, i can tell people are sometimes too sure of themselves and stick to the INTERPRETATION BASED ON A HANDFUL OF LYRICS. DON'T EVER DO THAT. IT'S LIKE QUOTING THE FIRST PART OF A PROVERB, IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN.

General Comment:I really love this song!!!

How can you guys tell that she was/is a cutter? I've googled it and I can't find anything that suggests that she had a problem with self-injury.

My Interpretation: I believe the use of the metaphor of fornication, specifically masturbation and co-dependency, are referring to the spiritual adultery that takes place when we replace the one true God for the idol of money. It is all using others for our own personal gain, and in the end, we are merely playing with ourselves in the the quest for material prosperity rather than seeking the kingdom of heaven and its righteousness. The lyrics assume an understanding of adultery and fornication as disgraceful and links them directly to the love of money.
