Warn your warmth to turn away
Here it's December every day
Press your lips to the sculptures and surely you'll stay
For of sugar and ice, I am made

It's in the blood
It's in the blood
I met my love before I was born
He wanted love, I taste of blood
He bit my lip and drank my war from years before

She exhales vanilla lace
I barely dreamt her yesterday
Read the lines in the mirror through the lipstick trace
"Por siempre," she said,
"It seems you're somewhere far away"
To his face

It's in the blood
It's in the blood
I met my love before I was born
She wanted love, I taste of blood
He bit my lip and drank my war from years before

Love like winter
Love like winter

It's in the blood
It's in the blood
I met my love before I was born
He wanted love, I taste of blood
He bit my lip and drank my war from years before

I do not believe that this song is about being gay, or bisexual as Davey during an interview said that he uses “he” in one verse and “she” in another to distinguish between two different relationships and avoiding the potential confusion that may be caused by saying she twice.

Let’s call “he” lover #1 and “she” lover #2.

He says that soul mates are is designated to you before birth, like destiny and you can't change the way you feel about this person, in his case lover #1, as it is a love that lasts forever and does not leave your system (It's in the blood, it's in the blood. I met my love before I was born). Because of this he warns to potential lovers not to get attached to him, as his love is cold and hallow; he will never be able to fully love again because of the heartbreak of his parting with lover #1 (Warn your warmth to turn away. Here it's December every day). If you do wind up in a relationship with him, as he is desirable, yet cold in lover #1’s absence (Attractive to others, but cold in lover # 1’s absence), therefore it will only end in tragedy as he is frozen, like a sculpture, in a state of frigidity and incapability to love since his heartbreak (Press your lips to the sculptures and surely you'll stay (Love like winter)).He begins a new relationship with lover #2 but feels no devotion to her, he does not truly love her; she is not reserved in a precious spot in his heart. Thus she is not held in a place of warmth, and is figuratively in the cold, where one can see a person’s breath when they exhale (She exhales vanilla lace). He feels no attachment to this lover, unlike lover #1 who he feels like he met before he was born; to whom she is his soul mate, his only love (I barely dreamt her yesterday, yesterday). It’s clear that lover # 2 is smart enough to realize she can never live up to his expectations, because she will never be lover #1 of whom he is “forever” devoted to (She said, "it seems you're somewhere far away" to his face) as entailed by "the writing on the wall" (Read the lines in the mirror through the lipstick trace "Por Siempre").

According to Davey Havok, "decemberunderground is a time and a place. It is where the cold can huddle together in darkness and isolation. It is a community of those detached and disillusioned who flee to love, like winter, in the recesses below the rest of the world."

The reason it was released in the summer, is probably because listening to it is like escaping from the illusion of summer's warmth and happiness, because after, it slowly dies and transition to Fall is made, and then Winter. Kind of like an escape, like Davey said.

And this is an amazing song. The exact meaning, like all of the songs, revolves around the life and death of romance, and romantic feelings.

I agree with hyperview for the most part.....i get the impression that the line "he/she bit my lip and drank my war, from years before" is all about the person taking all the baggage and heartbreak and despair that goes along with Davey(the speaker in this case, maybe its not Davey)...but he can taste the blood and remembers all too well of past experiences? (my first post, thanks for humoring me)

The only conclusion I can come to is that it's about the wake of a passionate love affair, an affair so strong that, once over, nothing can ever compare to it again. The speaker (whether it is, in fact, Davey or not, I'll still refer to him as davey because it makes things simpler)fell in love with a man ("he bit my lip and drank my warmth from years before") and, eventually, the two lovers separated, breaking "Davey's" heart. The Second verse details another relationship of Davey's, long after the first has passed. Still, Davey doesn't feel any attachment to this woman ("I barely dreamt her yesterday"). Whether "Por Siempre" ("For Always") is Actually written on the mirror or not (I see it as figurative, like "the writing on the wall"), it's clear that this girl is smart enough to realize she can never live up to Davey's expectations, because she will never be "him", and Davey is devoted to him "For Always".("She said, "It seems you're somewhere far away, to his face"). Davey is left heartbroken again- he also has come to realize that, without "him", Davey cannot love. Hence, the first lines are about warning potential lovers not to get attached to him ("Warn your warmth to turn away. Here it's December everyday.")- Davey will only dissapoint. ("Press your lips to the sculptures [Davey, like a statue since his heartbreak] and surely you'll stay/ for of sugar[attractive to others, but...] and ice [cold in "his" absence], I am made.") Well, there's my first post. Ha. and a ridiculously long and really subjective post it is.

Since there is no WRONG analysis of a song, after listening to this cd for a week straight, I think this song is about being gay. Not Davey nessicarilly being gay, just in general. It seems like the person's love is always cold, like winter, because they're not accepted for it. "I met my love before I was born" seems like he's saying that people's sexual orientations are already preplanned before they're born, and they can't change the way they are and the way they feel. "She said it seems you're somewhere far away, to and space" makes me think that the person wishes they could be normal, and just like girls, but they're too far away from that life and are already living the one they are born with. I'm sure it's not about that, but if you think about it, it sort of does make sense.

I'm going to put a different spin on it. I think it centres around gratitude. The singer is grateful towards his lover for all they have been through for him.

The first verse is his warning about himself; he is difficult to be with, cold, distant, pensive and essentially scarred. He has sucked the warmth out of all his relationships, and it hurts him that he hurts others, so he tries to avoid any form of warm human contact.

The second verse is where he realises that this isn't going to turn out like the others. He wonders if this is all real, or just an image in his mind, created out of figments of his hopes and dreams ("I barely dreamt her yesterday", "Read the lines in the mirror through the lipstick trace.") And he realises she wants to help him.

The chorus is his exhaltation at finally finding happiness, his ultimate "thank you". This person has come into his life and taken away all that he had pent up inside ("She bit my lip, and drank my war from years before.") He believes that this love was destined to find him, it's in their blood to be together, and he is thanking her for finding him and putting up with him.

I sang this to my gf and she cried...

I'll give my best guess, but this song is so ripe with symbolism it's crazy....

It's about soul mates. and impossible or incompatible love.
The speaker has something broken about him and he is warning his lover of that. The two last lines of the first verse communicate that the coldness he has (being broken) will keep her there...
sadness/pain can be beautiful between lovers; the need to take care of one another.

It's in the blood; i met my love before i was born.
(there's no control over the way they feel about one another, it's in their blood; they are star-crossed) she wanted love, i taste of blood- she bit my lip and drank my war from years before. (she wants love, but i am full of hate/violence. she can drain me of hate/violence.)

the second verse seems to be about futility and things between them falling apart, mostly because the speaker is broken. his self destruction is distancing him from her; he's somewhere far away. and she's challenging him about it... to his face.

The gender/sex changes in the chorus i interpret to mean that true love between people has more to do with spirt than with sexuality.

I agree with Yigamiester, I think the song's about being gay. I've spun a few other ideas around in my head, and some of them are really good, but that's the only one I can really make all the lyrics fit with. Maybe it's just 'cause I'm gay personally, but a friend of mine actually came up with that theory before I did, and they're not, so I have to assume that's not the only reason.

I could be wrong of course, the song is very ambiguous, and I know it's always... sensitive (for some reason) delving into issues of sexuality, but that's what I think it's about. Do I think Davey himself is gay, or bi? Not necessarily - I'll be honest, I neither know nor care (though I would be interested to hear an answer from his lips, and not his fans). But I think that's what the song is about.

Ok, this is what I get from this song.. This song is not about him being in love with both a male and a female.. I don't know if everyone has not seen this video or seriously listened to this song or what.. but anyway (this is totally besides the fact that in numerous interviews Davey Havok has attempted to tell people he is indeed not bisexual, but does like how his songs help bisexual people deal with being that way.)

Anyway, I believe it's from a male and female perspective.. the first and third verses are from the perspective of the female.. the second is from Davey, (or other significant male)'s perspective.
the lyric "it's in the blood" has absolutely nothing to do with vampires.

It means that their partner was chosen for them.. through fate.. through family.. through whatever.. before they were even born.

If anyone has seen the video to this song.. in the end she goes underneath the water and Davey sinks to the bottom.. I'm pretty sure he's dying..

it basically means through the whole relationship the girl was trying extremely hard and the male was distant from her.. makes sense huh?

    That's my point of view.

I really enjoyed this song. It is rare to find a song with homoerotic messages that is widely accepted and enjoyed by the rock community. I don't know anything about the sexual preferences of the band members, but I salute them for being able to present what could be a controversial subject matter in a mainstream song.

Light Up The Sky
Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

The Night We Met
Lord Huron
This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines: "Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet" So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other: "I had all and then most of you" Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart "Some and now none of you" Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship. This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

No Surprises
Radiohead
Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example: "'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/
