Lyrics for Ruby Tuesday as interpreted by oofus

Ruby Tuesday Lyrics
She would never say where she came from
Yesterday don't matter if it's gone
While the sun is bright
Or in the darkest night
No one knows, she comes and goes

Goodbye Ruby Tuesday
Who could hang a name on you?
When you change with every new day
Still I'm gonna miss you

Don't question why she needs to be so free
She'll tell you it's the only way to be
She just can't be chained
To a life where nothings gained
And nothings lost, at such a cost

Goodbye Ruby Tuesday
Who could hang a name on you?
When you change with every new day
Still I'm gonna miss you

"There's no time to lose", I heard her say
Catch your dreams before they slip away
Dying all the time
Lose your dreams and you will lose your mind
Ain't life unkind?

Goodbye Ruby Tuesday
Who could hang a name on you?
When you change with every new day
Still I'm gonna miss you

Goodbye Ruby Tuesday
Who could hang a name on you?
When you change with every new day
Still I'm gonna miss you

it's about a groupie brian jones fell in love with, he wrote the lyrics to the song even though it's credited to jagger.

It Reminds Me Soooo Much of The Girl I Love, It Could've Been Written For Her, I Swear, She Is Exactly Like The Song Says

Brian Jones and Keith Richards wrote this but it's credited to Jagger/Richards. And that is the one thing I don't understand about The Rolling Stones, why don't they give proper credit?

I've read that this song was written entirely by Keith Richards. It's obviously about a girl, who like many "flower children", felt liberated and free to re-invent herself at any time. He says he misses her but never does he say he loves or even likes her. The girl in the song reminds me of Goldie Hawn in the movie "Butterflies are Free". Very enjoyable flick as a very young Goldie spends half of it in her underwear.

The answer to your question Philadelphia Eagles is very simple---GREED! The money made from songwriting royalties is enormous. Truth be told, Jagger and/or Richards did write about 95% of the songs as the other members knew their efforts would not be credited so why bother. Mick Taylor and Ron Wood have received writing credits. Bill Wyman complains to this day that he wrote the riff for "Jumpin Jack Flash" but isn't that riff basically the same as the one in "Satisfaction'?

I could be wrong, but I've felt that 'Ruby Tuesday' was like her name for Tuesday.. I'm not sure if that makes sense...

See, he says he can't hang a name on her, because she changes with every new day - and on that particular day, Tuesday, she seemed like a Ruby (though, she'll probably seem to fit a different name the next day and the day after, etc)

It's also about freedom, I think, and going after what you believe in, even if that means your life isn't going to be the same day after day (as some people want it to be)

Gorgeous song.

WAW...Kantsuu I think you got it with the name thing.....
I definetively think that it's about a groupie.
Other than that I don't think the song is that deep to look between the lines and try to figure out what does it mean.

Good call on the name of the week. I can totally see it being about a groupie, but also reminds me of friends I've had. I saw part of Butterflies are Free with Goldie Hawn, but I think that it's more like her daughter's role in Almost Famous. "Lose your dreams and you will lose your mind, ain't life unkind" She's definitely a free spirit who is able to act as though she's not emotionally attached to the guy.. she can come and go without attachments.

Just had a different thought about this one--"lose your dreams and you will lose your mind, ain't life unkind". That sure fits Brian Jones' situation doesn't it? He lost his dream (his band) and lost his mind.

I have read a quote from Keith where he can't remember the name of the girl that it was about, but it was a girl he had broken up with and all he had left was a pair of her panties and the song was just built from that. Brian Jones helped him write the lyrics and the music is almost all Brian. He was very musical and always played the piano, which is how this song came about. He had the melody down and would always play it, almost obessively and Keith finally decided he needed to come up with the rest of the song or Brian would never stop playing it on the piano.

maybe this isnt the intended message, but the whole thing really just seems like a metaphor for existence. ruby could be a girl or just daily life. there is nothing to the past, there is nothing to hang on to.

life is essentially meaningless:
"She just can't be chained to a
life where nothing's gained and nothing's lost at such a cost"

everything is transient:
"When you change with every new day
Still I'm gonna miss you"
yet is still beautiful

so live freely and experience everything as fully as possibly while you still have the opportunity to breath. this song makes me simultaneously blissful and incredibly melancholy.

but i suppose im just projecting my own feelings onto this. plus i was listening to the version from children of men rather than the rolling stones original so that might have something to do with it.

I like eatbeast's interpretation, but I think this song was about a girl one of the band members loved (can't say who though, since it's credited to Jagger but some people say that Jones wrote it) Whatever it is, this song makes me nostalgic for some reason. I love it.
