Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve.
The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future.
Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere"
The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

American Town
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran shares a short story of reconnecting with an old flame on “American Town.” The track is about a holiday Ed Sheeran spends with his countrywoman who resides in America. The two are back together after a long period apart, and get around to enjoying a bunch of fun activities while rekindling the flames of their romance.
Wow! I am sensing a lot of bitterness here. Let me just say first of all that this is NOT an anti-American song. Rather, it is against what we are turning into. I am a proud American serviceman and an amateur historian. I would like to say a few things here and please remember that it is just my view. First, the Germans did NOT start WWII. There were a lot of factors leading up to it. Some of them we don't like to admit, but the fact is that many nations had a part in creating the climate that led to the Nazi party's rise and aggression. The Nazis were indeed German, but the Germans were not all Nazis. This is very important to remember. We cannot simply blame all the evil that occurred in WWII on the Germans. To do so would be as incorrect as it would be irresponsible. Every nation had it's share of atrocities in the war. And my fellow Americans, remember that we too have a very dark chapter in our past. Just ask the Cherokee or any of the other hundreds of tribes that were victims of one of histories worst genocides. Second, we as Americans need to stop taking offense every time someone else disagrees with us. Instead, stop and listen. We may just learn something. We have forgotten what America is really about. America is as much an idea as it is a nation. It is the idea that all men are created equal. The idea that we all are entitled to our own beliefs, not just Americans, but everyone. We are forgetting what America means and we cannot afford that. This song is telling us what we are turning into. Instead of accepting others for who they are and what they believe, we now think that they need to be just like us. This is not right. It destroys other cultures and is an anti-American belief. I am not saying that we can't stand up for the oppressed, just that we should not force our beliefs on others. It is all of humanities responsibility to fight for the oppressed and those who cannot fight for themselves, but that is where our responsibility ends. What they do after is there decision not ours. America used to be similar to switzerland in that we were neutral in world affairs. We would step in if there was a true atrocity being committed but that was it. Needless to say our policy has changed since those days. I love America, but I am scared of what we are slowly turning into. Please, do not forget what America really is. It is tolerance, compassion, free will, and above all it does not judge others. I have done quite a bit of traveling and what I have come to realize is that culture is one of the worlds greatest treasures. As Americans we don't really see other cultures. Most Americans never leave the country and if they do it is very limited. When you do visit another nation, try to blend in and absorb the local culture. At least make an effort to speak the local language. To visit another nation and just expect them to speak english is an insult. Imagine someone coming to your town who doesn't even make an effort to speak english. You would be insulted. We have all heard someone say "your in America now, learn english!". Well it works both ways. I see a lot of American tourists who act as if America rules the world and all other nations should respect that. That is so far from actuality. We all work together and mutual respect is essential to the worlds well-being. That is what Rammstein is getting at. I may be wrong and I am not asking you to accept what I say as truth, just that you think about it. Oh, and please pick up a copy of the constitution and the declaration of independence and read it. That is America and we cannot afford to forget it.
AMEN!
@mksNAC This is well put. You should have this posted elsewhere than just this site for more people to see. <br /> I just returned from Europe on a 2.5 month trip and what you posted resonates deeply with me.<br /> Thank you.
@mksNAC Thank you. Knowlodge is Power!
@mksNAC <br /> I am a veteran Canadian soldier who has travelled a lot but mostly to the north western US. I have also trained with the US Army and Marines. The song I believe represents more of pop culture then real culture. <br /> Americans I find are some of the most kindest people I have ever met and very proud of their roots. I myself love the idea of your constitution where Liberty for the individual is paramount over the majority. <br /> Sadly though I find Americans ignorant to how the rest of the world works. With that said I mean in educational standards. Well knowledge. <br /> As Canadians well in my generation we knew of the US as well as other nations in geography. As a Winnipeg North Ender we were pretty much immersed in different cultures. <br /> I agree with what your thoughts are and wish the same for my nation. <br /> <br /> Soldier On.
@mksNAC There may be many factors leading to start of WW2, but you can't deny that it was started by germany. Germany attacked Poland on 1 september 1939. Saying otherwise is very dangerous. "Lie repeated 1000 times becomes the true" -Joseph Goebbels. And besides it's unrespectful towards people who died in ruthless and cruel german genocide. Expect that you are right. <br />
This song reminds me of something Jawaharlal Nehru (India's first Prime Minister) once said: "Dealing with America, you have two choices: you either accept the authority of the Pentagon and lose your freedom, or the authority of Hollywood and lose your culture". That's what this song meant to me.
The song always seemed to be more about a protest of the spread of American culture, than an outright anti-American song to me.. which makes a lot of sense, because as McDonalds and Coca Cola go across the entire globe, regional cultures and traditions are slowly being erased. In Italy for example, teh Fiesta or whatever it was called (I forget the name unfortunately), where everyone takes a break at around 4 pm to go out, is becoming less and less frequent.
Likely countless other examples could be used, and while I agree with the song ,blaming America for it isn't right since there's nothign stopping an 80 year old man in the Phillipines from buying ethnic food over McDonalds.
Dudes, its like America embraced Capitalism.<br /> So our Companies are big and stuff, and they went to like other countries.<br /> <br /> Then those companies were all<br /> 'Dude, like here's hella money can we build our shit here?' <br /> <br /> And then those countries were all<br /> 'yeah, sure whatever.'<br /> <br /> So it's like not America or even the American government's fault. (except for wars n shit)<br /> It's american corporations everyone is pissed at. <br /> Who aren't part of the government anyway they just happen to be in America.
it`s just critic on globalisation. they are not really blaming us-people, they are blaming the usa in the same way as they are blaming the countries that adopt american culture. ... ok in fact, i realize, they blame america but not only them ...
This song talks about americas products being all over the place, here we see NONE of our own products, it's all made in china, and literally says, made in china, it gets rather annoying.
Although this song in itself is against the spread of American culture to other countries, I don't think it should be taken too personally by Americans themselves and I don't think people should assume the song is bashing Americans or their culture. Every country has it's own culture, but a lot of people within the culture are interested with foreign cultures as well. Everybody probably has a friend who is (or are themselves) very interested in Japanese, Russian, German, or any other culture to the point that they are obsessed. Every country has that. The problem this song brings up is that America is a very strong nation politically and economically, so their products and culture ends up being the most accessible foreign culture in other countries and a lot of the youth emulate the American culture to the point of rejecting their own. This in itself is bad for nationalism and social structures within the countries. It also causes gaps in societies and breaks down the group solidarity, since the national image of a country fades away. I think this song is more of a warning to the people within the countries to remember their culture and strive to keep their national image to keep their country independent and strong, rather than telling Americans how horrible they are either individually or en masse. It really is up to the individual if they will buy into American culture or not. Although, speaking on a National level when it does come to war... it would be nice if America would quit threatening economic disasters to countries who don't want to join them in their battles. Seriously, the connection with the missile defence system and Canadian cattle being banned is still very suspicious. Especially since the mad cow here was from America.
@reikogirl You still feel this way? The Korean War wasn't worth it. You realize we'd have no South Korea if we had not intervened. Stopping has left us with a psycho with a nuke and that is because China cleverly dragged things out on a negation level until North Korea was close enough to having them. So Mr. 2009 who has never served in office... still hate America? How about the vast majority of the middle east where women remain slaves? Send some food to Africa. Get off the comp and do something real.
And of course: "Coca Cola, sometimes war" In my opinion Rammstein trys to say that the Americans do whatevery they want to. Good mood "hey lets drink some coke" and when they have bad mood: "hey lets attack some country" some shit like that.
Ok, I'm done now.
Comments please :)
@menno I suppose Amerika should have stayed at home and let Germany burn Europe to the ground, reduce England to rubble and slaughter millions more?<br /> <br /> Leave the band out of history and enjoy the songs. If Germany needs help again, she'll get it from the U.S. Clearly the opposite isn't true but then I suppose they have their own issues don't they?
another anti-american anthem... gotta love it.
4 min ago <br /> <br /> Rated 0 im not just from America, im also in the world's greatest Navy. so yea i have to say though this song is so true about us and how we want it our way everywhere. who cares if people in other countries are starving if they dont like us then fuck it they can just suffer with no help at all.<br /> <br /> on the other side of things tho i think the Germans are just mad cuz we came in three years late and kicked there asses wait heres the funny part. not one but two wars.<br /> <br /> apparantly America is doing something right tho. i mean in WW2 we did fight a two front war. Just like Germany Did. Looks like Germany could pick up a few strategy tips from us. Hooya <br />
Yeah, it must be terribly difficult to wait out until an army is all but defeated to come in and deliver a killing blow. But when you are there from the very beginning, you can't even deliver the goods. Cases in point: Iraq and Afghanistan. <br /> <br /> But keep cheering Mr. Sailor, I'm sure your daddy's proud of you no matter what.
how is it anti-american? <br /> <br /> We're all living in Amerika<br /> Amerika ist wunderbar<br /> We're all living in Amerika<br /> Amerika, Amerika <br /> <br /> Wunderbar = wonderful<br /> <br /> tell me how its un american???
ya i have to admit tho...our government is terrible...i hate how it can be but lionking5003 you in the navi...i respect that (:<br /> <br /> i love america just i dont care for the government much
@ Billhawks he's being ironic.<br /> @ lionking5003 why are you proud about things the country which borders you happend to be born within (you had no part whatsoever in the happenings of WWII) accomplished 60 years ago?
Also, the Russians won the European Front in World War 2. 90% of the German Army was deployed on the Eastern Front and the Normandy landings didnt happen till after the Germans had been stopped and been started to be pushed back.
2crudeddudes - Germany was at their peak in WW2 when the Americans entered the war. Maybe if your stupid Jap allies didn't attack us, we wouldn't have had to whoop your ass. By the way, are you living under a fucking rock? We DID win Iraq and Aghanistan; we killed Osama Bin Laden! WAKE UP, DIP SHIT!!!
another anti-american anthem... gotta love it ;]
i hav nothing against you american people, but against your government, which is what this song opposes to sorry for the bad english
lol you talk like ur from michigan :)
rott3n,<br /> <br /> What exactly is wrong with the American government? Is it the fact that they believe in freedom and equality? Is it the fact that they believe a country endowed with as much power as ours should seek to protect the world from dictators and tyrannts?<br /> <br /> Or maybe you are focusing on the opposite side of the spectrum. Is it the fact that our government has steeped us in debt? Almost every other major country faces the same fiscal problems. Is it the fact that we "stick our noses" where they don't belong? If we didn't, Russia may have begun another World War, or the use of nuclear power may have occurred several more times. Is it the fact that our media culture has spread around the globe? Wherever it has spread was by those people's choice; we didn't shove pop culture down your governments throat. <br /> <br />
America,<br /> I tend to have a negative view of the American government due to their unrelenting wars of aggression. Wars of aggression are against international law and the United States has committed them in Yugoslavia, Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya. The continue to break international law by threatening countries such as Venezuela, Cuba, Iran, Syria and North Korea. In the last ten years more than 2 million people have been killed by the US and its allies in foreign countries. There are many cases were US pressure and intervention has made things worse such as Eastern Europe after the end of the communism (living standards have collapsed), Iraq after Saddam Hussein (conditions were better particularly before sanctions)
@rott3n<br /> <br /> I realize this is a really old post and im way too late, but I made an account just say this.<br /> <br /> American here,<br /> <br /> Don't worry, The majority of the new generation (those born 1960-now) of American's are not too fond of our Government either. The Baby Boomers and some of their blind offspring have been spoon fed the idea that there is really freedom here and everywhere else just sucks.<br /> <br /> Don't get me wrong, Capitalism is a great idea. Having one profit from their own hard work and innovation makes sense to me. However, that's if Human's were perfect. This is unfortunately how any economic and political ideal goes. When it comes to human beings, if their is a way to exploit it, they will find it. Doesn't matter the country or people, there will always be someone. <br /> <br /> America was/is really the first country to embrace the idea that anyone can live there/here. Now this is a worldly ideal, but America got the head start.<br /> <br /> Countries fear they are losing their culture due to the spread of American culture. In America, the feeling is the same, we feel we are losing our culture to ourselves.<br /> <br /> These are the things that they do not talk about in the news, neither world wide or even locally here in America, but are all common knowledge there/here.<br /> <br /> Just as the Romans had the Colosseum to entertain their people to distract them about the things that are terrible, we have American idol, Facebook, McDonalds, Coca-Cola and the Wonderbra.<br /> <br /> sad really, but again.. this is human nature. we are self-destructive.<br /> <br /> oh and as for the troops (army, navy, etc.) most of them know all of this truth too, but they are in a different situation.. I am reminded of another song when it comes to this, it would be System of a Down's "B.Y.O.B"<br /> <br /> Hate it, love it, it's the truth.
@rott3n Well, didn't your government go to war with the World twice. And elect Hitler as your leader? <br /> <br /> You're more than welcome to go try again.
This is an anti-American song: America is the world's cop, influences the whole world with it's products and decadency etc. Well this is at least what this song means (I think ;))
And I really like it. Not because I hate America. I just like the song, especially the chorus, starting with some words in English, then continuing in German (We're all living in Amerika). Excuse me for my bad English, it's not my language
