This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines:
"Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet"
So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other:
"I had all and then most of you"
Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart
"Some and now none of you"
Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship.
This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"
Walk with me
Open your sensitive mouth and talk to me
Hold out your delicate hands and feel me
Couldn't make any plans to conceal me
Open your sensitive mouth
Hold out your delicate hands
With such a sensitive mouth
I'm easy to see through
When I come up
When I rush
I rush for you
Cry for you
Seen the tears roll down from my eyes for you
Heard my truth distorted to lies for you
Watched my love becoming a prize for you
Seen the tears in my eyes
Heard my truth turn to lies
Seen the tears in my eyes
I'm not proud of what I do
When I come up
When I rush
I rush for you
I come up to meet you
Up there somewhere
When I rush to greet you
My soul is bared
Gave more for you
Dropped my crutches and crawled on the floor for you
Went looking behind every door for you
And because of the things that I saw for you
I spiritually grew
When I come up
When I rush
I rush for you
When I come up
When I rush
I rush for you
When I come up
When I rush
I rush for you
Rush for you
I rush for you
I rush for you
I rush for you
Open your sensitive mouth and talk to me
Hold out your delicate hands and feel me
Couldn't make any plans to conceal me
Open your sensitive mouth
Hold out your delicate hands
With such a sensitive mouth
I'm easy to see through
When I come up
When I rush
I rush for you
Cry for you
Seen the tears roll down from my eyes for you
Heard my truth distorted to lies for you
Watched my love becoming a prize for you
Seen the tears in my eyes
Heard my truth turn to lies
Seen the tears in my eyes
I'm not proud of what I do
When I come up
When I rush
I rush for you
I come up to meet you
Up there somewhere
When I rush to greet you
My soul is bared
Gave more for you
Dropped my crutches and crawled on the floor for you
Went looking behind every door for you
And because of the things that I saw for you
I spiritually grew
When I come up
When I rush
I rush for you
When I come up
When I rush
I rush for you
When I come up
When I rush
I rush for you
Rush for you
I rush for you
I rush for you
I rush for you

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

This is a sequel to 2001's "Reckless Abandon", and features the band looking back on their clumsy youth fondly.
Just A Little Lovin'

I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example:
"'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/
I'm so tired of people saying every single song that was ever done by Depeche Mode is about drugs. It's so narrow-minded and actually kind of shallow. To Hollygayface - no, he didn't do it for his fans, you obviously know nothing about drugs and addiction... we're all lucky he isn't dead. There was genius before, and there is genius after. Lastly, Martin Gore is the writer, not David Gahan. So David, in this song, outside of his voice, is telling us nothing.
That being said, this song is one of my favorites. David Gahan's voice is absolutely incredible, sexy, haunting, desperate, so much more than anyone's voice should be able to encapsulate in a mere 5 minutes. The lyrics are some of MG's best. I think this is about obsessing over someone that stringing you along... and all the shame and desperation involved. Not a hard-on and a needle. They are so much more than that.
@RachelLea the song title is called rush. It\'s the rush of a drug. Being addicted to a drug. This song is a convo between the drug and its user. I rush for you to make you feel good. Sounds so seductive. Not the first time a song about heroin sounds like that. Have you heard placebo\'s my sweet prince? \r\nIt\'s a back and forth convo between the the drug and the user. The guy is saying he\'s in agony and lies to get his fix and feels ashamed. But the drug says "but i give you a rush and get you high. I do it for you. I make you feel good." So seductively evil... it\'s like the guy is pleading to be freed from the drug. But the drug says but I make you feel good and the guy gives in... \r\n"I come up to meet you\r\nUp there somewhere = getting high\r\nWhen I rush to greet you\r\nMy soul is bared" = feeling like your soul left your body or maybe it means he did die by ODing\r\n\r\n"Gave more for you \r\nDropped my crutches and crawled on the floor for you\r\nWent looking behind every door for you\r\nAnd because of the things that I saw for you\r\nI spiritually grew"\r\n\r\nAn addict will do anything and give up anything to get his fix. Even crawl on their hands and knees of they have to...And bc of the things that he experienced just to get the drug meaning the time dave ODed and was brought back to life, he spiritually grew. That experience put life in perspective for him and made him realise that the reason for his unhappiness was the lack of a spiritual connection with God. He "spiritually grew".
@RachelLea Yeah but remember no one hears the same song. We all project our own experience onto everything we come across, especially music. I don't hear drugs either with this song, but others do. I hear the obsession over someone and think the song is similar to In Your Room. It has that desperation. But, Martin was definitely in the grips of his alcohol addiction around this time so wouldn't be surprised if that was coming through in his lyrics as well. As a drug addict myself, I know the desperation associated with using
Martin wasn't the one on heroin, folks!!!
@blynx No, but I think it's a pretty safe assumption that he'd have tried it. if for the sole reason of tapping into Dave's psyche. So yeah, I guess he knows how it feels.
@blynx doesnt have to be using drugs to write a song about it. Martin is very sensitive and observes the behavior of a bandmate he\'s close to... it\'s enough to be able to write a song for it... rush is the rush you get from the drug like heroin. It sounds like a convo between the user and the drug itself. Kinda like the angel and demon where the demon (drug) is whispering in your ear to do something even though you shouldn\'t and it\'s saying "but it\'s good for you... it will male you feel good... dont you wanna feel good?" And the guy saying I would even crawl and look everywhere to get some... but also his experiences while using drugs led to him learning more about himself (not necessarily recommended but worked in his case) and he spiritually grew. When you OD (as dave had) and are brought back to life, it will put things in perspective for you and you grow in every way. A lot of the time what ppl lack is a spiritual connection with God which leads to their unhappiness. Those with a spiritual awakening and developing a relationship with God, tend to be able to find peace of mind and happiness.
@blynx Oh yes he was. He didn’t struggle with addiction as much as Dave did but Martin certainly did use hard core drugs during that time. I don’t think he realized how bad off Dave was at this point. Young and naïve and full of dreams. Don’t we all wish we could relive our 20’s again!
@blynx Martin was very much addicted to alcohol though
Seems like someone he's desperately in love with and wants, but that person just plays games with him and it's making him crazy.
I would have to say this is about a guy who has truly got his heart in his relationship, but falls short of expectation, doing things that hurts his loved one. It's a song largely surrounding the fact that he isn't perfect, but when it all comes down to it, his devotion is with this person. "See the tears in my eyes, I'm not proud of what I do. When I come up, when I rush, I rush for you."
See the tears in my eyes, I'm not proud of what I do. - I think he's not proud of following her around like a fool.
i like to think of this song being about a guy who is misses his ex. they've dated before but things fell apart, (maybe he broke up with her) and now they've started becoming friends again, and hanging out. she seemed to move on but he still misses her alot--he looks forward seeing her again just so he could be with her, and he hates the fact that he has to lie to her (telling her that he's over her as well)and it sucks a lot because he really wants her back.
but yeah...totally awesome song.
For me this song will always be about an orgasm. For example, in between minute 2:26 and 2:33 of the song and other parts, but specially there, you can hear a subtle ringing noise that reminds me of how your ears start ringing after an orgasm.
@ohiamzoe umm… that’s not something that’s universally experienced. You might want to get that checked out by an audiologist or an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) doctor.
A new point of view for me. Well it makes sense, although it could also be about devotion to another person. Anyway, one of my favs, I love the power of this song!
I believe that this song is about a break up because of the part Seen the tears in my eyes Heard my truth turn to lies Seen the tears in my eyes I'm not proud of what I do
Seeming to the part that he is crying and also rumors going around
Well, addictions are running through Martin and through Dave right now, and Fletch has his problems, This is the tour from Hell, and the one that mould's DM's future. Martin has his quirks, after all, so really, this song could apply equally to both of them. I see it as some form of poly/junkie/SM multi-confessional without any apology. Needs must, all know at this stage that it is change or die.
Another song about heroin?
@neoboman yup... hence the title
Well, I have some strange feeling that this song is about blow job, right?
