I'm so tired of people saying every single song that was ever done by Depeche Mode is about drugs. It's so narrow-minded and actually kind of shallow. To Hollygayface - no, he didn't do it for his fans, you obviously know nothing about drugs and addiction... we're all lucky he isn't dead. There was genius before, and there is genius after. Lastly, Martin Gore is the writer, not David Gahan. So David, in this song, outside of his voice, is telling us nothing.

That being said, this song is one of my favorites. David Gahan's voice is absolutely incredible, sexy, haunting, desperate, so much more than anyone's voice should be able to encapsulate in a mere 5 minutes. The lyrics are some of MG's best. I think this is about obsessing over someone that stringing you along... and all the shame and desperation involved. Not a hard-on and a needle. They are so much more than that.

@RachelLea the song title is called rush. It\'s the rush of a drug. Being addicted to a drug. This song is a convo between the drug and its user. I rush for you to make you feel good. Sounds so seductive. Not the first time a song about heroin sounds like that. Have you heard placebo\'s my sweet prince? \r\nIt\'s a back and forth convo between the the drug and the user. @RachelLea Yeah but remember no one hears the same song. We all project our own experience onto everything we come across, especially music. I don't hear drugs either with this song, but others do. I hear the obsession over someone and think the song is similar to In Your Room. It has that desperation. But, Martin was definitely in the grips of his alcohol addiction around this time so wouldn't be surprised if that was coming through in his lyrics as well.
