There's an army on the dance floor
It's a fashion with a gun my love
In a room without a door
A kiss is not enough in
Love my way, it's a new road
I follow where my mind goes
They'd put us on a railroad
They'd dearly make us pay
For laughing in their faces
And making it our way
There's emptiness behind their eyes
There's dust in all their hearts
They just want to steal us all
And take us all apart
But not in
Love my way, it's a new road
I follow where my mind goes
Love my way, it's a new road
I follow where my mind goes
Love my way, it's a new road
I follow where my mind goes
So swallow all your tears my love
And put on your new face
You can never win or lose
If you don't run the race

General Comment:I feel like in general people are reading WAY to into this song. I feel like it's basically just about a "forbidden" love, but they guy it saying, screw what everyone else thinks, let's just love each other. I think when he talks about "winning the race" the prize is supposed to be love.

General Comment:There was a video on youtube of the furs doing this live acoustic version of this and so many people were commenting how Richard's vocals sucked, how he was terrible, how he was off key. And I just thought you a-holes, listen to what he is singing, you are the ones he is singing about. The tight-assed little scaredy cats stuck in their one dimensional box. That is what this song is about and everyone here has touched on that in some way.

General Comment:This without a doubt was written about the New World Order. The first line about "the dance floor fashion with a gun" This is about brainwashing the masses, the literal programming of your mind. This fashion is literally a gun because it programs us to follow their manipulation. In a room without a door. A world taken over by "Mystery Babylon" every religion hi-jacked literally a world without an exit without Christ. The kiss is not enough is literally a reference to Jesus, the kiss on his cheek before he was crucified. Love my way it's a new road, the new testament or new convenant is the "new way" that no one wanted. "I follow where my mind goes"...meaning he has an open mind he is not fooled by those that would hi-jack his soul. The end says to put on a "new face" basically with the everlasting power of God we will put on our new face, we will swallow our tears because we know who wins in the end. You can never win if you do not run the race. We must live in this world as Christians but we do not have to be of this world. BELIEVE IT!! Now you know why this group never made it that far. They had and do have a very powerful message.

General Comment:well isee the nazi thing, not in the specifics but as in a general 'the System against the Other' way, wanting to co opt it and make it behave, make it hate its way not love it. Like the narrator has found a way out of the madness, away from the wind up people with emptiness in their eyes and dust in their hearts & this scares and threatens the bejesus out of the System; there can only be binary this or that but the narrator is saying perk up, you don't even need to choose my love, don't even play their game/rat race

    or something

My Interpretation:I came to see if anyone else had thought about the nazis when listening to this song. Although I thought about how the nazis also sent gays to the camps.

There's a (baddish) movie about it, it's called Bent with Clive Owen in it, I instantly thought about this song when I saw it.

I think this is one of the best songs ever written, love it.

General Comment:I always thought this song was about a band who didn't want to get signed for fear of being taken apart. Whatever it means, it's a great song and Grant-Lee Phillips cover of this song is fantastic.

General Comment:The Furs have always been really hot when it comes to innuendo. I've always thought that nothing they do could or should be taken at face value. We have two references presented that ofer up the song as some sort of tryst between two lovers who never knew that they were destined to meet. Potentially to passers in the night who shared a part of their souls in a mere glimps. The song could also potentially be about the persecution of the Jews and Fascism. I'm not saying that I'm correct in this, but certainly there are parrellels that can be drawn.
1." Army on the dance floor"- the goose stepping and posturing and the many parades held by the 3rd Reich
    2. "Fashion with a gun"- SS uniforms or something yet even more obscure such as the German masses being brain washed into believing that the corralling of the Jews by force, and intering them in camps was what needed to be done. Potentially something that was more than simply en vouge.
    3. "Swallow all you tears my love Put on your new face"- Don't worry about the morallity of persecuting your neighboor. Set those things aside and don the face of the New World Order.
    4. "They'd put us on a railroad They'd dearly make us pay"- Cattle cars and concentration camps.1
5."In a room without a door a kiss is not enough" - Perhaps the mere moments before the inevitable gasses were released inside of the showers. Perhaps something worse.
    6. "Emptiness behind their eyes There's dust in all their hearts"- I can just envision the Jews looking out from their slatted cattle cars looking at the faces of their German neighboors watching them depart for the death camps.
I'm potentially very wrong about the song, but I might be at least partially right.
