yo so wasteofwebspace pretty much hit this shit right on the head, but i wanna add some. the whole thing about not getting into this album at first is totally true - i still listen to it and wonder when this song is coming next - but its really good start to finish my point:: the verses on a very superficial level are extra poppy and happy, kind of joking about all this heavy stuff like people often do. they mock it, saying - i am intelligent enough to throw these ideas around, but julian snaps back with the chorus kind of commenting that there's much more under the surface yet to be discussed by listing off all these "izes" that we dont really understnad/need. and in getting so righteous about these things and their implications on how little we actually know about what we are doing and the larger effects of all these things, his voice gets more andmore intense until he gets"cut off" and your face is completely fuckin kicked in by how ill that whole song was. |

this song reminds me of one person in particular. he always got the best of me, he was sly, ridiculously smooth, always, and he broke my heart. anywho... "did i strike the right set of chords, you're annoyed..." i think it's about a relationship that has gone sour, for reasons unbeknownst to us. not that it was even on good terms to begin with, but as he thinks about its dowfall and ending, he bittersweetly speculates and coos about how "we don't always want what's right." perhaps he tried too hard, perhaps he really did fuck up, but he's too fed up with thinking about it, he just give us this::: "add it up and basically people never change." the images in the song are very compelling, to me at least, and become even more so as the tone changes into the last verse. he seems to whine, lacking any closure or genuine desire for it. whether or not this song sounds better on drugs, its definitely got a drug-tint to it. first off, its "hopeless" and when he says "turn off the lights, its night on the sun" i thinkhe is just saying, turn off your hopes, theres no meaning in being disappointed or fulfilled because after all: i eat my own blood and get filled up get filled up; i get filled up on me and end i think that he is definitely pining for someone in the beginning part of this song, or at least telling someone that he understands them. but after the structure of the music gets thrown out the window and it's pretty much a free-for-all it is clear that he is being led to this feeling of hopelessness, or understanding of a person's state of hopelessness by the fact that: well there's one thing to know about this town its five hundred miles underground; and that's all right well there's one thing to know about this globe its bound and its willing to explode, and whether or not he is saying "it's alright" to be fecicious, it seems that he wants to leave the listener with an underlying sense that, hey, its gonna be alright, and he is enlightened with knowing this, and keeps rockingout even though he's saying,almost with a sarcastic tone "there's one thing to know about this earth we're put here just to make more dirt," i think that this whole album is so caught up on notions of death, the irony of living and dying, the feelings we have about death while living which really end up being pointless, that it takes you in a complete circle. so dissecting one song is kind of pointless unless you know the whole cd to me, but this is definitely one of my 2 faves. |

i agree with what a lot of you have said, but heres my 2cents: first off, i put this song in my senior yearbook blurb because its kind of optimistic, and kind of morbid at the same time, and the lines: And in the places you go, you'll see the place where you're from And in the faces you meet, you'll see the place where you'll die And on the day that you die, you'll see the people you’d met And in the faces you see, you'll see just who you've been describe my high school experience in a nutshell. anyway - i feel like this song is more likely than not about a person, not just a concept or a feeling. i feel like its based off a person who is "just a rock" to him. the thing about that metaphor is that it can mean a rock - an obstacle to grow around as a weed or a rock - something to attachyour roots to and establish your position with. but as he is caught in this paradox of a metaphor, he finds himself feeling something else: So you think you've figured out everything But we know that our minds are just made out of strings and hence, he is in a life like weeds, coming to terms with the fact that we fight to be heard and just to get the last laugh in but all in all it didn't matter. (this is where we go from a person to a concept, as well as the switch in the tone of the song) "i could have told you all that i love you" basically refers to the fact that he knows that with effort and fervor maybe his life could have meant something, but its a life like weeds, and we all fall back into the flow of time and he asks us: I know where you're from, but where do you belong? but this is rhetorical because after all, nobody knows. i tihnk this made more sense in my head but yeah. its an amazing song and i tihnk that when you are looking back on your life, even just a little bit of it, you can definitely relate to the things he's saying. |
