The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Man, Muse is the best band of all time, I've been a long time fan of theirs. Well, I think this is my favorite song on the album, and that's a feat, given that every single song is incredible. Personally, I believe that the song is about a rebirth of sorts. It's definitely about a relationship, one of long-standing. But I believe that it hasn't ended, it's just changed in some way or another. I always thought of it as a relationship that started to fall apart, until something forced the two of them to change, which brings a new light to their love. Lines like "I'll love whatever you've become," and "making the same mistakes again," seem to point out a reevaluation, perhaps a destruction of the past: "nothing will ever stay the same," "memories I will never find." In any case, it's pure brilliance, makes me want to cry every time I hear it. Powerful stuff, no matter how you interpret it.
@TricksterJWK Matt and Dom have said that the song is about the difficulty of remembering the good and bad times, and how your memory picks certain things to remember and others you can't, however this can be a good thing, too, because it helps to develop and to change if you have to.
Those of you who claim this song is about a breakup are to some extent correct but you're thinking far too superficially.
This song can be viewed in a much more cosmic context when you think about it with regards to growing older, maturing, and realizing that things are changing around you. You lose some of the love you used to have, yet you keep some of it. Some of your relationships last; others don't. You are happy at times and at others sad.
This song is about remembering all of those moments, whether good or bad. And at the same time, it's about realizing that your life will continue regardless of your past, and you have the chance to entirely reinvent yourself if you so desire ("I think our lives have just begun.")
The "I" in this song refers to you, yourself. The "you" refers to anyone whom you might love at any point, including your parents, romantic partners, or simply your most intimate friends. The "we" that this song refers to, then, refers to you and your loved ones.

I came to this page because I've wanted to get the lyric "staying awake to chase a dream" tattooed for a long time, and i just wanted to make sure i was making the right decision - i love the lyrics but thinking that this song was just about a bad relationship just didn't sit well with me. I completely understood where you were coming from and it actually kind of freaked me out how perfectly it matched up with me right now. I feel like I wouldn't have known how to explain it all - it's just what I feel when I listen to the song. It's not only an ending - it's also a beginning. It is memories of not just one thing, but many. I don't know if you can make a mistake twice - the second time, probably not as much of a mistake as a stupid decision (those reckless things), but yeah, it also helps that that music these days - does not sound like this - so authentic, simple, yet complex - just a work of art. Is seems to me that they're not breaking up. They are a couple in a destructive relationship that, for some reason, are staying together. "Falling away WITH you". "So i'll love whatever you become, and forget the reckless things we've done". I haven't found anyone else who has viewed it this way and that surprises me. Of course I haven't read every comment. @dogassnat That's similar to what the song was written about, however the real intended meaning isn't as sad as that, the "I'll love whatever you become, forget the reckless things we've done" part is positive as it's about moving on from and forgetting the memories that don't help anymore.

No, no, I think the song has this double meaning that many songs have: they can apply to a relationship, because they're written like that on puspose, but that's only the surface, as somebody said above.
I think the deeper meaning is the writer talking to himself. If you take this approach, the song has a completely different meaning than if you see it only as a relationshiplike song:
It has to do with the writer having changed, and having somehow lost the hopes and happiness of an early life; having done reckless things as he grew up, and not being able to find that childish happiness again, not sure that it even exists, that it ever existed. However, he decides to accept himself and giving himself a chance saying: "I'll love whatever you become...our lives have just begun". But it still feels he can't find any hope, or find those memories.
I think this makes sense considering the other songs and the name of the album.

It seems like he can't understand why it was over, and he would do whatever he could to fix it because his world is "crumbling" without it.

this song used to be one of my least favourite from the album but the more i listen to it, the better it becomes in my opinion :-) it's pretty straightforward, but musically it's a delight.
