Sing me to sleep
Sing me to sleep
I'm tired and I
I want to go to bed

Sing me to sleep
Sing me to sleep
And then leave me alone
Don't try to wake me in the morning
'Cause I will be gone
Don't feel bad for me
I want you to know
Deep in the cell of my heart
I will feel so glad to go

Sing me to sleep
Sing me to sleep
I don't want to wake up
On my own anymore

Sing to me
Sing to me
I don't want to wake up
On my own anymore

Don't feel bad for me
I want you to know
Deep in the cell of my heart
I really want to go

There is another world
There is a better world
Well, there must be
Well, there must be
Well, there must be
Well, there must be
Well...

Bye bye
Bye bye
Bye...

General Comment:I think it's great that the book has introduced this song to so many people, I just hope that you all give other Smiths songs a listen too, as there are many others that are just as beautiful and rewarding as this one. Some suggestions:
    There is a light that never goes out;
    That joke isn't funny anymore;
    This charming man.
    Enjoy! x

General Comment:I think this is definitely about suicide or thinking about suicide. What we never know is whether the guy in the song goes through with it in the end. It's more about longing to be somewhere else, longing to be somewhere better than the place you are. Eventually, the person thinks the only way out of their situation is to take their own life. They're that desperate to be in another world forever.

General Comment:Def about ending it all, but he desires to be comforted by song on the way out. Moz loved many different artists, I would like to know which one would provide his perfect swan song

General Comment:Beautiful song, loved its use in the Perks of Being a Wallflower, which is how I found it. Regardless of what it was intended to be about, it describes feelings we've all been able to relate to at some point in our lives.

General Comment:Not sure why i chose to superscript to the website all the sudden not im not really into this kinda stuff. This song "Asleep" hit home. A good friend of mine killed her self a month and five days ago. Lately ive been listening to alot of music and though i try to be cheery most the time it feels good to listen to music and cry for a bit. This song makes me think like what i imagine she was thinking this songs descries a piece of her personality, the darkend side of her " deep in the cell of my heart i want to go" "Sing me to sleep" even though i wasn't there when she did this i was holding her hand through it through her hard times she was having. Know that shes gone i want to hold on to the idea that she loved me and this songs bring me closer to her thought and what i want to understand about her thoughts, this is a beatiful song that makes me understand her thought process behind her actions. She was wrong, but i love her either way. I love you, i hope there is a better world... there must be.

My Interpretation:I know everyone thinks that this song is about suicide, and it probably is, but this is my interpretation.
I think the song is about someone who knows they are going to die, from an illness or injury. They are telling their significant other that they want them to stay with them until they fall asleep for the last time, then leave them to pass away quietly. In the following:
    Don't feel bad for me
    I want you to know
Deep in the cell of my heart
I will feel so glad to go
They are telling them not to be sad, because they will be happy that their death is putting an end to their sadness and suffering. And in:
    There is another world
    There is a better world
    Well, there must be
They are saying that there must be an afterlife in which they will be happy and healthy, and free from their troubles.
    I love this song. <3

My Interpretation:This strikes me as a depressive song, like he's trying to justify his reasons for suicidal actions.

My Interpretation:This song gets me thinking about suicide and people who have committed suicide in this life. Personally, I do not know of anyone in my own life who was sunk so low as to merit an early grave, and I'm extremely thankful for that.

Anyway, for me, this song deals with suicide. Just view the lyrics especially:

"Don't try to wake me in the morning 'cos I will be gone/Deep in the cell of my heart I really want/will feel so glad to go".

The narrator is so fed up with life that he feels the need to die.

"There is another/better world. There must be. Well, there must be..."

Again, this is a direct reference to suicide, in my view.

Whenever I listen to this song, I think of two people. They are Ian Curtis, the lead singer of the Post-Punk band 'Joy Division', who committed suicide by hanging himself in his kitchen in May 1980. Tragic loss, as he was a fine frontman and totally deserves the iconic (cult) status he now has. Also ironic in that Morrissey comes from Manchester, just as Curtis did. The other person is myself. I have been as low as you can do, in terms of severe depression. I know what it's like to want to die, end it all and, believe me, it is NOT a pleasant place to find oneself at all!! All things considered, it really is not hard to relate to this song at all.

A magnificant piece of songwriting here.

General Comment:I want this song to be played at my funeral, there's a very small chance I might die from suicide but my reason for suicide is weird,I really want to see if there is another place after life on Earth, that's why I love the line "There is another world, there is a better world, well there must be".
