I just can't seem to get it right today
I just can't seem to get it right today
I just can't seem to get it right today
I guess I'm gonna give up
Oh, I guess I'm gonna give up

It's nearly been a year since he's been gone
And we still sing his goodbye songs
Goodness knows she should move on
But she just can't let him go
No, she just can't let him go

I'm sorry if I made you want to cry
I'm sorry if I made you want to cry
You should know, I never meant to hide
I just hate bringing you down
Oh, I just hate bringing you down

I just can't seem to get it right today
I just can't seem to get it right today
I just can't seem to get it right today
I guess I'm gonna give up
Oh, I guess I'm gonna give up

And I dropped my paintbrush in the dirt
Still remember just how much that hurt
I cut my hand and wait for it to work
But I just couldn't bring him back
No, I just couldn't bring him back

I just can't seem to get it right today
Oh, I just can't seem to get it right today
I just can't seem to get it right today
I guess I'm gonna give up
Oh, I guess I'm gonna give up
Oh I guess I'm gonna give up
Oh I guess I'm gonna give up
Oh I guess I'm gonna give up
Oh I guess I'm gonna give up
Oh Lord I said I guess I'm gonna give up
Oh Lord I said I guess I'm gonna give up

    My Opinion

There's a lot of different meanings taken from his words, what i got from it is hes trying to be the person he once was, the guy she fell in love with&he can't get it right, he's depressed&doesn't want to put his misery on anyone else, hes not opening up cause he doesn't want to disappoint her&bring her down too.Shes getting frustrated because she just wants the guy she loves, but shes trying to reach out and she gets turned down. He starts cutting, gave himself up(paintbrush as in he gave up his passion to change even if cutting ruined it) to get a rush and get back a piece of who he was back for her, he doesn't want to continue hurting people. But at the same time he feels like hes at the bottom of everything, there's no motivation&he feels hopeless and is thinking about suicide cause there's nothing good waiting for him if he sticks around&he thinks hes disappointing everyone around him.Just an opinion could be totally wrong on this, but its what i took from it.

I think he has lost one of his friends "its nearly been a year since he's been gone". He is trying to help his friend's (the friend that died) girlfriend cope from the loss "Goodness knows she can't move on......" He hates seeing her hurt "I just hate bringing you down" but knows she must move on.

To make matters worse he is trying to act as if he has moved on himself however he really hasn't coped from the lost either. He is using drugs to cope with his pain, specifically heroine. "I dropped my paintbrush in the sand..." Paintbrush = Needle "I cut my hand and wait for it to work" (lose of blood + drug use should yield a much higher high than just drug use) He became so high that he thought he could bring him back to life "I just couldn't bring him back" - This is one thought

However here is an alternative thought that is probably more reasonable:

Maybe that is how his friend died they both used heroine and cut themselves trying to get a better high in doing so his friend died. He tried to bring him back and he still holds on to that memory. Maybe it was his idea for them to do this to get a better high and he is still trying to say sorry to his friend's girlfriend at the same time trying to forgive himself (such a dumb idea to cut yourself and use heroine neither is a good idea but doing both is pure stupid), in return he is becoming depressed still with the memory and the sadness that he has brought to her. I think he still blames himself for his dumb idea, hence "You should know, I never meant to hide, I just hate bringing you down" He believes that when he comes around her he is hurting her by reminding her that if it wasn't for his dumb idea her boyfriend would still be alive.

Now he is torn, trying to help someone else cope when he is just as depressed as they are. He hopes for the future saying he can't get it right "today" but maybe tomorrow? We know that will not work either he can't be the comforter when he himself is distraught.

I think this song is just talking about a person who died. In a way, I think it's kind of saying one of two things...

1 being someone to us has died that means a lot to us, and no matter what we do we can't bring him back.

2 being the I guess i'm gonna give up, could mean he's gonna give up on trying to bring him back, or he's who the songs about, like when he says I'm sorry if I made you want to cry, as in suicide.

whatever the real meaning is, it's amazing.

Speaking from a semi-third person viewpoint...

He has been "out of it" for a year now, depressed, hopeless...

By "goodbye songs", he means that him and her (gf/wife) are still going through the fight of trying to bring closure to their relationship and/or get him healthy again, and he knows full well she should just move on, but "She just can't let him go" - She loves him and knows the truth, that there is still hope and beauty in the world, that he is too blind to see right now, because he is still focused on the sadness in his life (past).

He's sorry for putting her through this and the things that he does (/doesn't do) that unintentionally hurt her, and he tries to avoid her because of it... It hurts him and brings him even further into depression when he hurts her. He feels that he's going down and doesn't want to drag her down with him, he wants her to leave him, to give up on him. He's hurt enough in his life and just wants the pain to end.

Nothing seems to be going right for him and the smallest of things can bring the worst pain to him, and with it comes all the feelings he's been pushing down (repressing). He slit his wrists and waited to die, because no matter what he tried (painting to relieve tension and express himself) he couldn't bring himself back to the way he was... Nothing was working.

    It's hopeless.

So, from my perspective, of dealing with depression for most of my life, that's what this song is about.

Maybe he is singing about the man he used to be, but then something happened and now he is trying to be the person he was in the past but he feels he is failing himself and his partner.

That he and his friends or wife lost someone close to them. And he's feeling useless because there's nothing he can do about it and how he can't move on and he's going to give up trying.

The sorry for making you cry part maybe because since he can't see through it so he's bringing everyone else down.

This is about not remembering which side of your Kia your gas tank is on and giving up because you get such great gas mileage and you don't really need to fill up anyway.

...or is that you forgot because it's in the shop all the time? I don't remember.

Standing On The Edge Of Summer
Thursday
In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Son Şansın - Şarkı Sözleri
Hayalperest
This song seemingly tackles the methods of deception those who manipulate others use to get victims to follow their demands, as well as diverting attention away from important issues. They'll also use it as a means to convince people to hate or kill others by pretending acts of terrorism were committed by the enemy when the acts themselves were done by the masters of control to promote discrimination and hate. It also reinforces the idea that these manipulative forces operate in various locations, infiltrating everyday life without detection, and propagate any and everywhere. In general, it highlights the danger of hidden agendas, manipulation, and distraction, serving as a critique of those who exploit chaos and confusion to control and gain power, depicting a cautionary tale against falling into their traps. It encourages us to question the narratives presented to us and remain vigilant against manipulation in various parts of society.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example: "'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/
