Written by Paul on his farm in Scotland, the original inspiration was from a well-known piece by Bach, that he never knew the title of, that he and George used to play as kids. Originally Paul had in mind a black women, rather than a bird. These were the days of the civil-rights movement, something that Paul and the other Beatles cared passionately about. Consequently, Paul is really writing this song to a black woman, who was experiencing the many associated problems concerning civil-rights in the United States. Paul is saying to his woman (or any black woman) to keep trying, to keep the faith, and that there is hope. Rather than using specifics, Paul used a blackbird, that became symbolic so that it could be applied to any situation or problem. |

great song...it can pretty much mean watever u want.....u know...just apply it to ur own situation ....we all got pressure in our lives. There are some key lines that suggest that that this song is preaching the "ignorance is bliss" theory. "its the terror of knowing what this world is about" "turned away from it all like a blind man" ect. ect. that kind of .....knowing to much for ur own good, the smart are always troubled by the world. Vanilla Ice is also called "bi polar" now.....ice SUCKS....whenever under pressure comes on the radio or i play it.....all the people in the room always go "Vanilla ice sucks" then i have to correct them and they feel stupid |

i agree with rebelpancake.......first jack and meg WERE married.. but the got seperated/divorced....but decided to keep the band together. And u can hear traces of "country" (really southern blues) in just about all there songs if u have a good ear, and a chunk of their tunes are covers of Blind willie Mctell and other black blues and slide artists from the 30s |

I have a faint clue of what this song is about, but mostly, to me its just a great collection of poetic imagrey....with a great tune that can really make ya weep...just readin gthe lyrics....but man if your listening to this song when your driving down a fogy road in the middle of the road and your all alone, youll just start bawling. As far as im concerned, a great song dosent need to be about anything. |

agreed he does do some creative stuff with tunings and capos....but once you know the capo and tuning, his songs are pretty easy to play....still absolutley brilliant. first off...floggingmolly....tmbg definatley wrote particle man, not the Bobs, im a fan of both and trust me i know. Ive read lots of different theories about this song including the ones at the site Linoqe listed above. Everything from the holy trinity to the pathagory therom.....there are so many ways to interperet this song....and triangles....that it almost seems that Tmbg just wrote this song so that everyone could make their own little theories......wenever i get bored in class i always make little cartoon drawings of particle man triangle man universe man person man ect......and educate people with it on TMBG ....awsoem tune |

OK this isnt bout this song but i figured id say it here cuz this is the most popular song...............Im DAMN Sick and tired of people comparing bands to other bands because everyone is always trying to clasiiffy everything....like people saying the strokes sound like Television..the ramones....or the velvet underground..or.. other 60s and 70s bands.....why cant you just say "the Strokes" sound like "the Strokes" i mean they totally have their own style and sound and everything.........i also think that applies to most bands and artists.......like when john mayer came out people were calling him Dave Mathews meets coffeee house rock.....i hate when people say __________ meets____________.......its the most usless way to comape music......the only real non original music is those bands that are like 100% copycats......Blink 182 spawned a lot of copycats(while blink was onced called a green day copycat) like SR 71...american HI FI....Sum 41....and tons of other smaller and unknowns...........the whole calssification system pisses me off.............not that im saying any body who wrote here is wrong....so thanks for listening to me rant......and recomended bands..if u like the strokes.....the hives ..white stripes...ramones |

I THINK that this song is about how women seem loving and cute like little girls and they use that charm to attract men and get their money, but when Dylan shows their true colors that they are Deceitful and dishonest, and that they just want to take your money....after dylan points out this side, they seem to be ice harted and greedy, after we realize that women are truley "two faced", Dylan reveals a third face which is true. That beneath all of the womans charade, they are just little girls and have those qualities of a meek helpless child.

by the way BUDOKAN RULES!!!! best recording of alot of his songs in my opinion, any way in that version alot of the lyrics r diff, ....prehaps ill submit them, if i were a loser with no time.....seriously thanks everyone on the sit for puttin up lyrics.......mayber, the joker is Dylan.....did he get that knick name before or after this song...idont know? the song has a very mystical vibe to it and i like "mass"s interp.. makes sense.......i propose that it is more of an anti GOVernmenrt statement....maybe the GOV is the thief, and the Joker and dylan represent the anti establishment/anti GOV protest community of the time and the war. no reason to get excited.....GOV trying to supress protests?
Another theory of mine is a message about the poor treatment of Native Americans, by the GOV(the theif)...that would explain the "plowmen dig(till) my earth".... "None of them along the line know what any of it is worth." ....GOV dosent appreciate the land and wants to destroy it "There are many here among us who feel that life is but a joke"= GOV disrespect for indians lives
might also explain why he says its about the Mojave desert

i agree im not in a situation with a abusive dad or a horribly broken home. I ve got a standard suburban seperation, with both parents re maried. I think most people can really relat to this song cuz alot of their fans are suburn kids who have had parental problems that arent THAT bad, but to each individual that small level of family disfunction feels like a huge deal and like their dad walked out on them, thats how i feel , i hate my dad, BUT HAVE TO LIVE WITH HIM |

OK listen up everybody, has anyone here ever heard of SYMBOLISM!! Just because they dont come right out and sing a hymn about Jesus dying for mans sins doesnt mean thats what its about. In my opinion it can be about everything anyone on this site has suggested, the generation gap and listening to our elders, THE MAN, the civil war, Veitnam, knowing when to fight, pro war anti war, whatever.
The point is, it uses spirituallity or religion to convey a message about how (i think) war is bad and blinds us and that we need the eyes of wisdom and experience to guide us.
Really the whole thing is one big jesus analogy
-General (leader, sheperd, jesus)
-heart of gold (love for man kind)
-past battles (sermons, arguments between non believers and jesus)
-won and lost ( people he converted to his beliefs)
-a seasoned veteran in his own time ( a head of his time)
-beard(beard)
ect ecte cettcp tlc trl ect ectectect......
you git the point
the whole message of the song is that the general (jesus) went out to face the battle alone and died for mans sins
it also shows much of the pain that jesus went through which i think comments on the often unconfronted pain of Jesus's death which is even more strongly emphasized through song and bring out more emotions.
In conclusion, i feel that this song is one big jumble of messages rolled into a kick ass song that definatley has some spiritual message.

I think that this song is saying that a girl/guy doesnt care if you "would be a dream" or a perfect girl or anyhting, and that they really care about just being noticed by them, ie "if you'd call my name out loud". I know that when im someplace and someone i sorta know, notices me that makes me feel really special |
