I'm surprised no one's mentioned this yet, but this song is clearly about Rivers' vow of celibacy. Read some of his old journals in which he confessed all his failed relationships during this time due to being unable to..."please" the women in his life. "Make Believe" has a lot more depth than people give it credit for if you take into account the vow of celibacy, intense meditation and general tubulations in Rivers' life from 2002-2005. |

For those who aren't too familiar with Rivers' history, there are a bunch of subtle and not so subtle references in this song: 1) "don't let me play football" - probably a loose reference to the fact that Rivers had a busted leg as a child and couldn't play sports. instead he took up music, hence the second verse. 2) "moving out to Cherokee" - refers to Cherokee Ave. in Hollywood where Rivers first started writing and recording with Zoom/Avante Garde 3) "people will crane necks to get a glimpse of me and see if i am having sex" - probably refers to the whole media hooplah about his vow of celibacy from 2002-2005. 4) "when it's party time like 1999, I'll party by myself" - seems like a lame rhyme, but it most likely is a subtle reference to when Rivers became a hermit, painted his walls black and sought to perfect the art of songwriting in 1999 before The Green Album. there's probably more. but the point is - there's a lot more here than what meets the eye |

This song stands up easily to the classics. It's amazing on every level. The climax of this song sends tingles down my spine. Either way, I'd be willing to bet that this has to do with meditation. I also think that the line is "this deeper peace has been a trade in." But there should be lyrics in the booklet when it's released. |

| After listening to The Red Album several albums, this song is clearly the stand-out. This is easily one of the best Weezer songs. I'm glad that Rivers can still write a song of this quality. Lyrically, it fits in well with the retrospective perspective that Rivers give of his metalhead youth. Just as Rivers said in the opening track "I will learn by studying the lessons in my dreams." Pat's drumming, Brian's interlude and the build-up at the end with the harmonies are the real highlights. | |

| this song is extremely catchy and a decent showcase of metric's talents...however i went to their concert the other day and i couldn't believe how amazing they were...they might've been the best performer and this was the same day the yeah yeah yeahs, franz ferdinand, and violent femmes played...they have an amazing stage presence and are soooo much better live...go check em out...hopefully they'll be able to transfer that live goodness over to the next recording effort. | |

i'm going to go on a limb and say that i think this song could be a direct response to 'across the sea'. ATS: "goddamn, this business is really lame I gotta live on an island to find the juice " hence IITS in ATS, rivers is completely depressed by a girl that he cannot be with because of the distance and goes insane and dreams of a better time. in IITS, he happily responds "we'll run away together, we'll spend some time forever, we'll never feel bad anymore" "When you're on a golden sea You don't need no memory" is probably another response to not looking back to the bleak past and enjoying the present time together. could be a slight over-analyzation but rivers is way too much of a twisted genius to write songs so straight forward on green. in fact, i wouldn't rule out that every song on green could be responding to songs on 'pinkerton'...very possible. anyone else think of this? |
