Queens of the Stone Age – Go With The Flow Lyrics 8 months ago
Before performing this song During the End Is Nero tour, in Portland, Maine on August 11th, 2023, Josh said:

This is a song about understanding where things are, but you don't have to just let it be there either. Life is very difficult. It's not fucking easy. But life is hard because it's worth it. And you can understand something, but you don't have to accept it. You don't actually have to fucking Go With the Flow.

Queens of the Stone Age – If I Had A Tail Lyrics 10 months ago
Rather than "having a tail" representing being some sort of sociopath or rapist, it looks more like that's the natural state, like being an animal. This is opposed to the unnatural, machine-like, superficial state that humanity, and specifically Americans, find themselves in, where surface appearances matter more than substance.

So, "if I had a tail" would mean "if I could be myself and not worry about it". It's aspirational, which matches the mood and tone of the song. If I had a tail, I'd swat the flies. If I could be like an animal, I'd get rid of the superficial annoyances.

The Turtles – She'd Rather Be With Me Lyrics 2 years ago
Seems fairly clear that he's singing about he and his girl are loyal to each other, while other guys and girls cheat on their significant others.

Also, it's especially happy because the reason they don't mess around is that they enjoy being together so much that they don't even want anybody else.

The Kinks – Tired Of Waiting For You Lyrics 2 years ago
It seems very clear that this guy is in a relationship with a girl, he's ready for commitment, and she isn't. There are a lot of songs about the reverse situation, but apparently it's hard to picture the girl being reluctant to commit.

He's clearly met her already. He explicitly says that.

The Beatles – Chains Lyrics 2 years ago
Sounds like he's talking to another attractive girl, to whom he is not married, and telling her that he can't get involved with her because he's married.

But he's okay with that, because he loves his wife.

Kay Kyser – (I Got Spurs That) Jingle, Jangle, Jingle Lyrics 2 years ago
"And that song ain't so very far from wrong" means that the song is correct, but only just barely. It's close to being wrong.

He is glad he's single, and that he moved on, but in each of those instances he seriously considered settling down, and almost did. Maybe he even would have been happy... but nah.

Love at first sight.

He not only wants to take her home, he wants to marry her. Fortunately for him, she feels the same way.

Swans – Drink to Me Only with Thine Eyes Lyrics 2 years ago
These lyrics are from "To Celia" by English poet Ben Jonson.

Throughout the poem, the speaker prefers something that is almost nothing from the object of his affection over something that is great.

A kiss left in a cup is better than wine. He'd rather drink her nectar than that of the greatest of the gods. The smell of a single one of her breaths is more portent than a wreath of roses.

The Presidents of the United States of America – Lunatic To Love Lyrics 2 years ago
This song works just fine taken literally.

He's got a girl with mental health problems. Sounds like it could be paranoid schizophrenia (one half of the brain is spying on the other half, driving her insane). But they love each other, and it's enough that she says she's happy, which is all that matters to him.

I've tried forming a relationship with a girl with schizoid problems, and getting that to work out is definitely something to sing about, because it ain't easy.

The Smashing Pumpkins – We Only Come Out at Night Lyrics 3 years ago
There are a million different ways to interpret this, but whatever you might personally feel that it is "about", the metaphor is clearly vampires. There's nothing stupid or wrong about that.

Beyond the violently obvious fact that vampires only come out at night, and the days are much too bright for them:

1) Vampires are generally shown in a coven, which has shallow similarities to a family, but none of them really know each other, or at least who they were, just what they each have become.

2) Vampires are often portrayed as sexual beings, pretending to love and care but simply feeling lust associated with their need for blood.

3) They hunt alone, and have a perilous way home, trying to make it before the sunrise.

4) Vampires are immortal. It's an eternal undeath of suffering. They have to pretend like that's not the case to stay sane. Like there's an end to this beginning.

Literally every line of the song is a vampire metaphor.

The Smashing Pumpkins – In the Arms of Sleep Lyrics 4 years ago
It's interesting to me that so many people think that the love in this song must be unrequited.

I think it also works quite well for when you are simply separated from the person you love for an extended period due to circumstances beyond your control, and are longing for them. I've been separated from my girl for months. We talk all the time, but it's still hard to go to sleep alone.

Concerning the line, "And I'll always need her more than she could ever need me": obviously, even in a healthy relationship, one partner or the other is probably going to need the other person more, or at least to feel that they do. When you have two quantities, they usually aren't equal.

Isis – Dulcinea Lyrics 4 years ago
This song is based on the book Don Quixote, by Cervantes. Don Quixote is a delusional man who decides that he is a chivalric knight. A knight needs a lady to whom he devotes his deeds, so he decides that a nearby village girl on a pig farm is actually a princess named Dulcinea.

One way to interpret the book is as a tragedy, where the post-chivalry world sees Quixote's idealism as madness. From this viewpoint, it's the world that is mad, not Quixote, because the world he sees is better than reality.

So, he is not mad, his thought is clearer than the saner men.
Because he is able to see beauty in the simple reality, such as a princess in the pig farmer, despite her tattered clothes. She is his queen. Not just a muddy peasant girl, but a queen.
He spends most of the novel adventuring, or wandering, through his delusions, the "dark", devoting his acts to her.

Of course, he never finds her, because she doesn't really exist. But, his belief in her and what she represents drives him to become either a hero or a madman, depending on your point of view.

Swans – Volcano Lyrics 4 years ago
Seems like it's about how female stars are so often sexualized, to the point that their music may not even matter. They may feel like they have some artistic vision that they're getting to share with their fans (there's a star in her mind and she knows it), but many or even most of the fans are just watching them shake their ass (they all know your name... but Collie you're still invisible).

The ending just sounds like a fan fantasizing about her sexually. There doesn't need to be anything cannibalistic about it. When you lick a girl you taste her flesh, and if you're sucking and chewing on her breasts it's perfectly normal to refer to that as eating them.

The Presidents of the United States of America – Peaches Lyrics 4 years ago
@[UnseenSoul:33020] This is preposterous. Among other things, rural areas in America are much more capitalistic than our socialist cities. Probably more importantly, all the peaches he is eating come from a man in a factory. Going to the country doesn't change this.

Peach – Signpost in the Sea Lyrics 4 years ago
Seems like it's about falling so totally in love with someone that you feel powerless.

There are multiple references to the power dynamic in the relationship. At first he felt really dominant, and she reinforces this by telling him that he's the captain of her ship. But now, he's so lost in love with her, that he feels completely overwhelmed by her power over him. Even though he's the captain, he's still lost, because there are no signposts in the sea.

Swans – My Buried Child Lyrics 4 years ago
@[Glome:31750] Sounds like an abortion to me also. Maybe after a rape?

Talking about a "violent mind", references to "liquid lust" and "liquid hate" could be the semen. Mentions loneliness buried beneath fear, talks about "concealing the crime". Getting an abortion after a rape could be seen as an attempt to conceal what happened.

Swans – Beautiful Child Lyrics 4 years ago
@[Dweed:31628] I also assumed this was about abortion when I heard it, but after reading the lyrics, the interpretation of killing your inner child makes the most sense. It could be about Abraham sacrificing his son given the religious context of the album, though.
