R.E.M. – Orange Crush Lyrics 8 years ago
@[Outthere:4645] Orange crush was the nickname given to Agent Orange. Apparently, not only was it sprayed by planes over the Vietnamese; American soldiers carried it with them, too. The fact that he sings about serving his conscience overseas suggests that he might have felt bad for all those men going to war and being killed. So he decides to go as well to ease his conscience over having his fun while men died.

The Smiths – This Charming Man Lyrics 8 years ago
@[baumhugger:4618] It's entirely possible it could be about Morrissey. After all, there has always been a certain ambiguity about his sexuality; something he has never confirmed or denied...(see above)

Yes, the lower class "boy" is clearly overwhelmed by meeting this "charming" man so it could be, in this sense, a song about homosexuality (or rent boys??). The lower class boy is self-conscious about his social status compared to this man (no decent clothes; his quote from Sleuth); and the man encouraging the "boy" not to marry (return the ring); not to deny who he really is - i.e. gay.

Can I just point out that JDB is not singing about love. The lyric is: "We don't talk about LIFE; we only want to get drunk?" And yes, it is very much a song about the working class.
