Bat for Lashes – In Your Bed Lyrics 7 years ago
A song of love and loss, happiness tinged with sadness, “In Your Bed” was written with the end credits of a film in mind.

Natasha Khan stated in an interview that: "It’s like flashbacks, her parting thank you for all the good times and the memories. It’s a reprieve. When I try and sing it live it’s impossible sometimes, all of the record, it’s just really full on."

Bat for Lashes – I Will Love Again Lyrics 7 years ago
Natasha Khan stated in an interview on June 2016:

"That song is the understanding that all isn’t lost: that she’s a new person, retaining hope when you could choose to be cynical or become this hardened person – like in “Widow’s Peak”, where the widows take you over and you’ll never get out. It’s the fact that she can open her heart to possibly loving again, who knows? But she knows that it’s there and that’s really reassuring to me. You can get heartbroken and cynical but it’s really important to remain open, because love is all there is at the end of the day."

Bat for Lashes – Close Encounters Lyrics 7 years ago
"Close Encounters" is described by Natasha Khan as being "about making love to someone from the other side." (https://www.theguardian.com/music/2016/may/07/natasha-khan-bat-for-lashes-new-album-the-bride)

Khan revealed to Rolling Stone Australia: "I scrapped everything I’d done on it four days before we were supposed to finish the album, it was a pop song girl-groupy Shangri-Las sounding thing. The record company were quite pleased about it and I was like, ‘Nooooo, I want warped, weird strings all over it and I want it to be really scary and dark!‘ And they were like, ‘Oh no’, but I just wasn’t happy with it, and I knew it wasn’t happy being dressed up in those clothes." Bat for Lashes – I Do Lyrics 7 years ago
I think that when I wrote "I Do," which was the first song, I was still seduced by the idea of romantic love. We're all seduced by the idea of romantic love and finding that person that completes you and that whole thing of this person will rescue me and I'll never be sad again. It's so ridiculous, but it's something that we all pretend that we don't think about but want. It's a very human longing, but I don't think that it's necessarily the most healthy or most realistic way of looking at love.Having gone through the bride's journey by writing these songs and performing them live, I think that it's about a choice and it's about balance, finding a balance between the need for community, the need for connection through intimacy and to be vulnerable in the face of someone else and to find your individuality whether you're with someone or not and to be open to love and companionship [without] becoming codependent and giving up on the ideas like going on holiday alone, being able to say what you really want, or maintain your individual perspective on things, to not shrivel into a vulnerable heap or trying to control another person.

Bat for Lashes – If I Knew Lyrics 7 years ago
Natasha stated in an interview that the song "is like the true love song on the album and it sort of - not an anti-love song at all - I can’t think of how to phrase it, but it's sort of the resolution of, the antithesis of romantic, heightened, superficial love, and it’s almost like a thank you letter to her lover for kind of helping her through this journey. So it’s kind of the deepest form of unconditional love - so for me it’s hard to listen to that, it’s kind of tearful."

Bat for Lashes – Never Forgive the Angels Lyrics 7 years ago
Natasha explained to Pilerats what the song is about:

"There’s a song called Never Forgive The Angels which is very angry and I think it’s really important not to get rid of one thing or the other, but you have to go through it and, like you explained, you had to go through those things and let out those emotions and sit with that. Spitefulness or anger or resentment kind of contort things and create monsters out of people, because that’s storytelling too and the human experience and I think that can create great works and great villains and great dark sides, and we wouldn’t have Star Wars if we didn’t have the villain."

Bat for Lashes – Honeymooning Alone Lyrics 8 years ago
Before performing this song live at Glastonbury, Natasha said that 'the bride has found out that her fiancé-to-be is killed on the way to the church in a crash and so she flees the church and she has to take the honeymoon alone.'

Bat for Lashes – In God's House Lyrics 8 years ago
It is obvious that this song, just like the others that are being released for 'The Bride', is linked to the short-film 'I Do' that Natasha directed. From my point of view, she is waiting for her fiancé at the altar, but he died on a car accident, probably the car fell off a cliff and it sank in the sea. Then we meet her at the altar and she tells herself that the guests can't see the fog of death through her veil.

Bat for Lashes – Skin Song Lyrics 9 years ago
"The song is from the perspective of an old lady looking back on her life through thoughts of the history in her skin," she explained to XFM UK. "We laid out initial parts by following a diagram of a cross section of the layers of skin. Some synths were a hair or the skin cells that sit like bricks, and we used a heart beat pulse for the beat, and electronic sounds for nerve endings. I also used my skin as percussion that was turned up in volume so you can hear it!"

Bat for Lashes – Good Love Lyrics 10 years ago
"It's actually about a dream I had. The words, 'I drove past true love once in a dream like a house that caught fire, it burned and flamed' is all very much about me in this whole trip trying to find this town where my husband is. And there's this almost flickery blue light, you know when I'm singing it I felt like I'm in a kind of light or in the dark. Most of the song is from the original demo I recorded on my computer."

Bat for Lashes – Deep Sea Diver Lyrics 10 years ago
"This wasn't written as a closing song, and for a while I didn't know what the last song would be. As it developed, I really like the ambient layering. It's a comforting song for me, it sets everything back to neutral. It's a good cuddle at the end of the album. It built-up slowly with loads of layers. The beginning of the song has a really important refrain: 'Let your hair down, throw your head back, relax, it’s alright.' By the end the music takes over and it's called Deep Sea Diver. Maybe you're on your own, feeling really good sitting at the bottom of the sea!"

Zulu Winter – Small Pieces Lyrics 10 years ago
"This song came out of a jam. It's probably the most guitar heavy song on the record, although not in a traditional sense: Henry's drove that runs throughout the verses is almost unrecognisable as a guitar. Lyrically, it was one of the first songs to draw heavily from T.S. Eliot's 'The Wasteland', when then became quite a large presence in the lyrics. It deals with what it is to grow old and not have made peace with vicious aspect of a life lived, whether that be impending death, unsettled relationship or practical worries."

Bat for Lashes – Glass Lyrics 10 years ago
"'Glass' actually started off with a excerpt of the Song of Solomon, which is a kind of love poem from the Bible and it talks about my mission for the album, I suppose. It's like a actual narrative and you can hear the New York subway, there's this JMZ train from Brooklyn to New York that I recorded. Basically, this song is kind of the fable, the kind of fairy tail version of what's to come. It kinda describes the fact that I go across an ocean and I discover a city made of glass and the watchmen, and the city pointed to my beloved which is a knight made of completely of glass and crystal. His heart is a sun which is too bright for me to see and he blinds me; so it kind of sets the tone for the rest of the record."

Bat for Lashes – Travelling Woman Lyrics 10 years ago
"'Travelling Woman' was one of the last ones I wrote and like 'Moon and Moon' for the previous album, I wrote it in the studio when I was finishing this record off. Supposedly it's kind of very straightforward in terms of lyrics and feeling, I think, compared to the other songs. It's pretty much the most direct, sort of me telling myself I have to sit by my own vision, not get too sort of off the track which I had been for half the album, pretty distracted and sort of all over the place. It's like coming home to myself."

Bat for Lashes – Marilyn Lyrics 10 years ago
Natasha explained it to Qthemusic: "This is one of my favourites. It's really romantic to me. It's one I worked with Beck on and the little arpeggio sounds and shoegazey guitars came from the sessions with him. I've got fond memories of recording it. It's about being in love with someone who is unattainable. It's a romantic, gushy sweet song. I love how experimental and playful Beck is still. He's always got an energy. He has a lovely family too. I hung out with his kids and his wife and we had a lovely time."

Evanescence – End Of The Dream Lyrics 10 years ago
"In general, it is about life and the afterlife, and the fact that basically it's short. It's my understanding of death, and my relationship with it, and life. It's my respect and appreciation for the fact that life is not going to last forever so you have to live now, you have to follow your heart, even when it hurts. That pain is something that you can't take for granted." - Amy Lee explained it to Loudwire

Bat for Lashes – Lilies Lyrics 10 years ago
Natasha explained it to Qthemusic.com and it was the first song she wrote for the record.

"Every time I write an album, the first track is my favourite in a way. This one especially because the content of the song is a really good manifesto for the rest of the record. It starts out haunted by being lonely or not able to get inspiration, feeling a bit isolated. By the end it moves into this pro-life, elated full-on ending. For me, the album is about letting go of things and resolving something. I think because I wrote it over such a long time - a period of two years - I was almost trying to get away from extremes, trying to be a real person and settle down and find out about those bits in between the drama of feeling really sad and fucked up and really euphoric and happy, because I'd written the last album in that dramatic dark place. I wanted the The Haunted Man to be a bit more eclectic and varied and rich, I suppose."

Bat for Lashes – The Haunted Man Lyrics 10 years ago
"I think the whole album is about The Haunted Man, he features in most of the songs, where he can be a lover in a relationship that's gone wrong or relationship baggage I want to let go of. In this one, it's a husband who's come back from war. It's using that metaphor of war. The man is really traumatised, the woman is trying to help. By the end of the song, the male voices and female voices are speaking to each other but it's about how men and women speak very different languages sometimes. So the women will try and fix something by being nurturing and show love and the men are saying, I just want to go to my cave. It was using the idea that my Granddad went away to war, nobody was offered help in those days, and how did that affect his relationship with my Grandma. Our families have all experience a lot of that in this country and that dynamic can come through in modern relationships too. I wanted to make it like a mini-musical, so the woman is alone and then the soldiers come over the hill and we panned the sound across so it sounds like soldiers coming over a hill. I feel like it explores all the different textures of the record. I wanted to write a song that was like a soundtrack."

Bat for Lashes – A Wall Lyrics 10 years ago
Natasha told Qthemusic.com its meaning:

"In the past, I'd done not as many happy songs. For me, A Wall is definitely a more positive slant on coming through something and looking at it positively. It's been going down really well live. The end is really euphoric and the outro is really happy. If we do it as a single, it'd be good to get it remixed. I feel like it could a really nice dance song."

Bat for Lashes – Winter Fields Lyrics 10 years ago
Natasha explained it to Qthemusic:

"The end of Laura has these fading orchestral, minimal low notes, and moving into Winter Fields seemed to work because it's a similar set-up which is bass flutes and low cellos. They kind of relate to each other in some ways, but Winter Fields becomes much more rousing and moves into that English landscape place. I think it's the most nostalgic track on the record, harkening back to my memories of childhood, being in the back of a car driving through country lanes as it's snowing, looking out over the fields. Those real childhood depictions of the English landscape. It's a little bit haunted, lost in the flurries of snow."

Bat for Lashes – Horse and I Lyrics 10 years ago
Natasha's world fell apart when her squash coach father, Rehmat Khan, left home when she was 11. She found comfort in nursing a horse abandoned in a nearby field and the equine species have subsequently turned up in several of her songs. This opening track to her debut album, for instance, was inspired by a dream of a horse carrying her away.

Bat for Lashes – Daniel Lyrics 10 years ago
In this song Natasha Khan sings of teenage love and nostalgia. Khan explained to MTV News that its "the most frightening song" on Two Suns for her, "because it's the most straightforward, naive and purposely simple song I've ever done." She added: " It's about teenage escapism and love and how simple things can be when you're a teenager in love, or how intense and beautiful it can be. I love songs like [Pat Benatar's] 'Love Is a Battlefield,' like when you sing them, you want to be leaning out the window of a car with the stars shining. And I felt like I wanted to encapsulate that feeling of abandon and love and sadness and melancholy, all at the same time." She told The Sun newspaper: "Daniel wasn't real. He's based on a fictional character that I fell in love with as a teenager. He represents that era of my life and exactly how I felt about my boyfriends at that time. My ambition was to make a pop song like the ones I grew up listening to."

Bat for Lashes – Rest Your Head Lyrics 10 years ago
Natasha explained the song to Qthemusic: "I was working with Dan Carey on the beats and stuff. Rest Your Head has got this dubby vibe to the low notes with me playing some piano for real over the top. We were listening to the Jamie xx/ Gil Scott Heron album and I was also thinking about some 90s dance music. I like to combine the electronic with organic things and give them a bit of humanity. I've got no idea where I'll go next - I've got absolutely nothing. It's like when you've just had a baby and you're breastfeeding. I don't want to think about another baby right now!"

Bat for Lashes – Oh Yeah Lyrics 10 years ago
Natasha explained the song to Qthemusic:

"I wrote this one quite early too. I thought the syncopated hip-hop beat in it was really sexy and then I found a sample of the gospel, choral part. It took a long time to develop the lyrics. Eventually, I visualised a big Henri Rousseau painting, or those big jungle paintings with all the naked ladies in it. It's about blossoming into womanhood. It's quite a sexy song, trawling through this jungle-y flora and fauna, a hot and sweaty landscape where nectarine dripping. It's basically my biological clock ticking, loudly!"

And the lyrics are wrong. These are the first lyrics she performed at Sydney Opera House back in 2011.

Bat for Lashes – Horses of the Sun Lyrics 10 years ago
Natasha explained the song meaning to Qthemusic:

"This was the first song I wrote for the album. It was written in a hotel room at the end of the Two Suns tour. It sounds most like the old stuff to me. I wrote it on an autoharp in a hotel room. When I brought it back, what moved it into the realm of the new album was [co-producer] David Kosten and I working on this Rihanna-y, Lil Wayne style snare beats, thinking of Snoop Dogg. I was really exploring my voice, trying out the lower part of my register. The content of the song makes sense that it's the first one, it says I curse the road. It's walking back through my door off this crazy journey and deciding to stay at home in England and not move for a couple of years. I wanted to incorporate a much more English sound on this album. I was looking at the history of the English side of my family and reading a lot of old English authors and romantic poetry. There are quite archaic themes in there."
