Regina Spektor – Us Lyrics 11 years ago
I like your comment. The majority of the comments here point out the song as a social and political commentary. They are mostly very valid and probably correct. But music is not just about lyrics, its about how it sounds too. And this song has a very sweet romantic lovely sound. Well, in my opinion and apparently yours, anyway. So why put political commentary in this format? Perhaps its somehow connecting the relationship of these two people with the relationship between certain countries. Im not sure though. Well done for exposing the romantic side of the song though because it is definitely present and a stranger to the song would never see it coming if he looked through most of the comments here. I'm gonna go through the rest of the comments now. Perhaps someone better explains this contrast or similarity between the two 'aspects' that this song seems to radiate.

The Gaslight Anthem – National Anthem Lyrics 11 years ago
I think this is a song about finding purpose in our lives.

His American Love was a girl he was with and they have gone their separate ways. He's reflecting on their time together and what she meant to him.

The whole song is about finding something in life worth living for. Finding meaning amongst all that crap that exists today. His American Love was this to him. She gave his life meaning. Now that he has come to terms with the fact that its over between them he's wondering what else is there to keep him hopeful and motivated, but finding it difficult.

"Now everybody lately is living up in space
Flying through transmissions on invisible airwaves
With everything discovered just waiting to be known
What’s left for God to teach from his thrown?
And who will forgive us when He's gone?"

To believe in God these days seems more and more difficult as Man progresses and his knowledge grows. We are being removed from spirituality so what hope is there when everything else is taken away i.e. girlfriend, friends, family? where do we turn?

He sings about how hard life is. But when he had this girl, she made it ok because she gave him a reason to endure. However, she wanted more than what he could offer.

"So take what you need now Honey and, do what you like..." Just get by however you need to. And if he's not the direction she needs to take, then that's alright. She needs to find whatever will get her through the night i.e. satisfy her own pursuit of fulfilment.

Metallica – The Judas Kiss Lyrics 12 years ago
Im not christian, however I do believe in some God. But when reading your "warning intro", i wasn't thinking of not reading because of anti-God comments. I was thinking, im not reading this because its gonna be bullshit - this is obviously about Satan, you're wrong.

However, I read on and i must say, its a very cool interpretation that you have. I never thought of it in that way because i was so wrapped in my own interpretation. I like this though cos it adds another dimension to the depth of the song and it ties up the lyrics very neatly.

Its actually pretty fascinating to see how God and Satan can be seen so similar to eachother if you have this perception. And that could so easily be the aim of this song.

Nice one!

i think you're spot on. Its all about how the devil comes to people at that precise moment when they have nowhere else to turn, corrupting their minds and promising them what they think they need.

I'd like to add to this though.

In my opinion, what makes this song so great is not just the awesomely expressive lyrics but the way in which the music contributes to the emotion and environment in which such a soul destroying moment must occur. Throughout, the riffs are aggressive and potent like Satan himself and they have this evil aura about them. In particular, its emphasised by that sharp twisting of that note in the intro and after each chorus. Awesome

I also see the song in different phases. In the first two verses and choruses, its all about how the devil approaches this unfortunate person with an offer that is seemingly irrefusable at this desperate time. Then the solo comes in (and what a solo it is...), I see this as the moment where Satan is actually weaving his evil and this person is accepting his fate, carrying out whatever evil deed he must in order to be 'relieved' of his troubles. And in this act he seals his fate and at that moment Satan shouts, almost in a mocking tone, "Judas lives, recite this vow, I've become your new God now!"... and Kirk continues the solo in its awesomeness, as if it's Satan himself shredding it in celebration of his victory.

Satan then goes on to brag about all his victories and how he's deceived and conjured up man's demise so many times throughout history. The song then ends with another chorus, kind of shouting at everyone who is listening, that he'll get us one way or another, so just Bow the F**K Down!

Anyway, this is just my perception of the whole thing, it plays out like a movie in my head everytime I hear it. For me, Metallica is one of the few bands that can express the emotions that accompany such themes as Death, Redemption, Glory and the undying battle between Good and Evil. Pretty awe-inspiring to me.

I just think it's ironic that you question their intelligence, but you cannot even spell the word correctly.
