I think this song is about trying to maintain your innocence through your life. I also think it is specifically about re-finding your innocence after a break-up. That though this man or woman has broken her and proven that life isn't always good, and that heavenly creatures aren't there for her, she'll never learn that and she's always going to believe in purity and magic. Such an amazing song, it always makes ME feel good! |

so here are several possible takes: (I thought of these all on my own) I know that she has said other things that differ, but whenever I write loaded songs, I never fully understand the meaning. So, tell me your thoughts! 1. Vanessa is portraying a prostitute ("I know the streets are mine tonight") or mistress of a powerful, evil businessman or politician and she feels like she's watching everything she loves be destroyed by him, but she is so filled with desire for him and stands by. 2. She feels depressed that winter is coming, and that the chill is biting her before it's even arrived, but that she is going to carry on through it. 3. EXACT OPPOSITE! She's excited that winter is coming and she is going to ride high with mystical creatures as the vampires (evil creatures) are growing tired and will finally allow for goodness to be free. 4. She's leaving her husband/boyfriend and is walking alone, but is trying to soothe herself by thinking about unicorns (goodness) and the vampires who are tired may be the man and his family and she is happy that they'll be gone from her 4A- Maybe she's leaving him for a woman (unicorn)... 5. Lastly, maybe she has just died and she's joining the ranks of these mystical creatures. "I stand swallowed by the light" |

| I always felt like this is a song about Liz being forced to be silent and do what everyone else wants her to do. She feels like she's in a cage and has to go through the same thing day by day by day. I think the part where she sings "I clean the house" is the climax because the piano gets louder and emphasizes a point of emotional change in her and she's ready to be done being a Canary. | |
