Gin Blossoms – Found Out About You Lyrics 1 year ago
@[law4:45873] I mostly agree with you here. You know, I was going to say that it seemed like they maybe had a date or two, it didn't go anywhere but the singer thought it did. But as I typed it, I realized, the girl was probably someone he encountered regularly, maybe because she lived close by, maybe because she worked some place he frequented, who knows. As you said, in his mind, a relationship grew when in fact they were acquaintances that knew a little more about each other than most acquaintances would.

I don't think it is fair to say that this song is better (or worse) than Voices Carry. VC certainly was more radio-friendly but still a great song.
Each of these two songs tells a very different story. VC is about a troubled relationship while this one is about a magical night that came and went. I think this one is actually easier to hear as it relates to a pleasant experience.

I think this song is pretty straight forward. The singer's brother was also his hero, the one who just excelled at everything. Now the brother is dead and the Singer is in mourning.

Wall Of Voodoo – Mexican Radio Lyrics 5 years ago
Through the early 1970s, radio stations would set up just south of the US border and were often called border blasters. The band of frequencies used to broadcast the AM signal can already travel great distances and even farther at night due to atmospheric skip (often called a skywave). Bound by looser restrictions regarding content and broadcast strength, these stations sent their signals out where they could be picked up through much of the southern US. I do believe the song refers to someone listening to those stations.

The Cars – I'm Not The One Lyrics 6 years ago
Seems like the singer is the fall-back person for the target of the song. She meets someone, dates the new person for a while, probably lives with them and then when things fall apart she returns to the singer. This routine has been going on for a while and the singer is finally opening his eyes to the situation; that sometimes he may be her only choice but he will never be her first choice.

Toad the Wet Sprocket – Something To Say Lyrics 6 years ago
@[catherineks:23018] The line "you can take me down / you can show me your home / not the place where you live / but the place where you belong" speaks to everyone at some point in their life. For most of our lives, home is the place where we belong. For most people, there is/was a point, often late teens to twenties (generally but not always) where home is not the place we feel most comfortable. We feel closed in by other's rules and reach out for a place to be ourself.

Toad the Wet Sprocket – Something To Say Lyrics 6 years ago
I've been listening to this song since the CD came out. The meaning of the lyrics always seem straightforward but when I actually think about them, I find the meaning to be just out of reach. I will give it a shot though.

The person he's singing to/about lives on the street. The singer runs into him every now and then, maybe at the park or waiting for the train or just on the way to the store. One day, a long time ago, he took the time to hear what the person had to say. They chatted, discussed things of moderate importance and bonded though the street person never really revealed very much personal information.

At some point prior to meeting the Narrator, the homeless person was hurt, badly. Maybe in the military or he was in a bad car accident, maybe he lost his family in a fir. Whatever the tragedy, he found himself unable to hold a regular job. Little by little, the homeless person built a life for himself, living off the kindness of others, odd jobs and perhaps a shelter now and then.

When the homeless person and the Narrator meet they begin an unusual friendship. Over time though, the Narrator realizes that his friend is holding back. He has learned little about the man personally and knows nothing of what caused his predicament.

The Alan Parsons Project – Don't Answer Me Lyrics 6 years ago
I can see the points some people are making. Like he's saying fine just go a way. I see it slightly different though.

He starts by listing the beginning of the relationship when they were lost in each other and the passion of a new relationship. During this time they didn't take an honest look at the other. As things progressed, some cracks appeared. When things were the perfect setting that things were in the beginning, she shut him out and blamed him for the problems.

Most of the rest of the song is him listing the things, almost sarcastically, that she is doing to shut him out. That he feels she is the one putting up barriers to them growing through their problems.

@[PeterBerian:21613] While I disagree with your interpretation I can see where you are coming from. Honestly, I think you are simply putting more to it than is there. As others have mentioned, the song is about unconditional love which as you've stated could be in a religious context but more likely of an earthy nature.

While listening to this song, there are small bits that suggest that it is about romantic love it is not hard to make it seem like it's about the love between a parent and grown child. As other have mentioned though, the song is about unconditional love which I think we see most often between parents and children

I agree with all of you. Not sure if it is their best song but at worst it ties with Under the Milky way for their best song.

I get that it is two people who left a place where they were happy. Right now they are having some rough times but feels that maybe things could be better if they made a road trip back to the city, maybe to visit or maybe to stay.

Gin Blossoms – Hey Jealousy Lyrics 6 years ago
@[gaeastigma:21528] I love your interpretation though I have a little different take on the chorus. We can drive around this town, let the cops... I see it as saying I still haven't grown up, I still pull the same ole' bs but you thought it was fun when we were 16. I think it becomes even more poignant when you take that line with, "If you don't expect too much from me, youi won't be let down."

Yello – Of Course I'm Lying Lyrics 7 years ago
Kind of an obscure song by a band that is really only known for one song and it wasn't this one. I have always loved this song and wish it had gotten more attention.

I feel like he's describing a paid escort/prostitute. She's playing a part, a role, giving him the girlfriend experience. These are the lies that she tells. After a while, after meeting up with her a couple times, he doesn't care that it's not a "real" romance. For him it is, he loves her lies.

The Cars – Drive Lyrics 7 years ago
I remember when this song was big, I was in high school. At the time I thought it was just a typical break up song. The singer is just saying, "Oh yeah well I'm not going to be there for you..."

I hear it as an adult and I see it for so much more. The singer is in love with someone that he knows is a mess. The problem is, she doesn't yet see that she has problems, perhaps in part because she's always had the singer to bail her out. The singer is trying one last time to tell her that without him, there will be no one to help her when she gets herself into trouble. More, he's saying that at the end of the day, when it's time to go home, she won't be going with someone who loves her.

Genesis – Misunderstanding Lyrics 7 years ago
@[ownz100635:15113] I get what you are saying but I don't think they are going to those places together. That's what I mean when I said, "maybe they run into each other..." Either they just happen to run into each other at places (e.g. the bank, a deli on the corner, etc.) he builds those events up into them going to those places together. So in the song when he says, "I went to the places that we always go" he's referring to the bank, the deli, etc. I may be wrong but every time I hear the song, the more it sounds like a delusional relationship.

Pet Shop Boys – Being Boring Lyrics 7 years ago
I love that sites like this one give me the opportunity to see a songs lyrics from another's point of view. I've enjoyed this song since it first came out but never realized its deeper meaning.

I always took it as two people (from my perspective a man and a woman but it doesn't have to be that way) who met young, fell in love and went on to spend their lives together. They never dwelt on the things that didn't matter to them. They went about and enjoyed life. Towards the end of the song, I took it to simply mean that as usually happens, one person out lived the other and was looking back at their lives together.

Kind of interesting to learn that in a shallow way I did have the song but that there is so much more to it. Thank you.

Dream Academy – Life In A Northern Town Lyrics 7 years ago
I always enjoy when this song comes up on shuffle. I love the song as while it describes a moment in time, in someone else's life, it also takes me back to the time when this song was a big hit. It is not a song that most people readily associate with the 80s, I haven't seen it on any compilation CDs and rarely hear it on the nostalgia stations and it is such a low key song considering the era it came out in.
I came here hoping to learn something about this song that seems to describe a particular day in a town I always imagined the singer grew up in. Thanks to @[ctlizyrd:14578] and others I've learned more about the who than the where of the song. I will have to look further into Nick Drake as I have enjoyed the listed performers who followed him.

Tracy Chapman – Fast Car Lyrics 8 years ago
@[Zygon:10267] I really don't want you to be right here, not saying you are are aren't. In the second to last verse, here's how I see it:

"You got a fast car
I got a job that pays all our bills"

You have a fast car, that's all you have, that's all you've ever had. I have a decent job, I've grown from the put upon kid at the start of the song.

"You stay out drinking late at the bar
See more of your friends than you do of your kids
I'd always hoped for better
Thought maybe together you and me would find it"

I always wanted a better life, but I wanted you in it. I thought of us as a team but you only saw yourself."

"I got no plans I ain't going nowhere
So take your fast car and keep on driving"

I'm where I want to be in life. You, you are the same immature kid that you were when we first met. I'm not leaving, I'm not moving around, you can take that car and get out of my life.

@[Miss:9490] Darkk I'm not sure if this is the case or not but I do see what you are saying. The song really does seem to be from someone (two or four legged) in a submissive position to one in a position of dominance. This really could be from a pet to a human.

Deep Blue Something – Halo Lyrics 8 years ago
Looking at what @[saatwik:9045] and @[AlmightyChrissy:9046] wrote I'm only slightly less confused by this song. I think both are on to something though. It's as though they've both gotten in way over their head with something and as a last result have turned to prayer. Towards the end when he hear's Where's your halo? It's as though he is trying to blame the other for all their problems and is being told you're not perfect, you're as much to blame as she is.

Deep Blue Something – Breakfast At Tiffany's Lyrics 8 years ago
@[doesnotcompute:9044] I don't think you are reading too much into it at all. He is just grasping at straws while she is trying to make a break with him. She's done with the relationship; probably because he was as needy while they were together as he appears to be in the song.

Bowling for Soup – 1985 Lyrics 8 years ago
The song is about a woman having a mid-life crisis. She's looking back at her life and wondering what happened. She looks at her kids and thinks back to the dreams she had when she was their age. Those dreams may not have been realistic but were far more exciting than the real life she's lived.

Barenaked Ladies – Another Postcard Lyrics 8 years ago
@[seeing:6560] If I remember correctly, the neighbor only sent one postcard but that was still the inspiration for the song. Ric Ocasek – Emotion In Motion Lyrics 8 years ago
I'm pretty sure that @SugarFreeShelia and @[mindhuntress:6449] are correct. The music is too uplifting for my following theory. If you look at the lyrics it could readily be someone proclaiming their love for someone who is dying. There is nothing the singer wouldn't do if he thought it would make her better.

Genesis – Misunderstanding Lyrics 8 years ago
@[miketorello:6213] Interesting viewpoint but the previous line explains that:

Jumped in my car, I went round there

The singer drove to her place only to see some other guy leaving her home.

Bryan Adams – Run To You Lyrics 8 years ago
Just a great mid 80s pop rock song. While it wasn't cool to admit it then, Brian Adams first (or a least first big album) was a great one. Loved all the songs that made it to the radio from it.

I tend to see the song as @[tall:5448] Andrew and @[stormgirl:5449] do. The singer feels mildly guilty for cheating on his girlfriend/wife but not guilty enough to stop sleeping with the focus of the song or break things off in his current relationship.

I like what @[MaryC:5450] says but I'm not really sure I see it as she does. I suspect that chasing after the guitar made for a more MTv friendly video. This was still the early days of MTv and I suspect they may have been more cautious as to what was put on.

Belinda Carlisle – Circle In The Sand Lyrics 8 years ago
@[newwavefan28:5446] Has it. The person she is singing about is very important to her, she's looking out over the beach and thinks of the first time they made love, on the beach. What I can't quite get and I think it probably depends on the listener's mood is are they still together and are they still happy. As the song progresses, there seems a bit of pain the BC's voice and the lyrics seem to indicate that while she is still in love, he is either completely gone or at least checked out.

A-Ha – Maybe, Maybe Lyrics 8 years ago
As @[historian:5358] said, the line "When you chucked me out the Rover at full speed" kind of changes the whole meaning of the song doesn't it? And as @[maqsimillion:5359] stated, most of the song is the stupide games we play when we are young, pushing each other away and then running back to them. Then of course she tries to kill/hurt him and now things get serious.

@[bslay:5291] I loved the music of the 80s, I was a teenager in the 80s. That said, I understand completely what @[OpinionHead:5292] is saying. Something about keyboards and synthesizers while capable of being good or even great music, changes the energy of what would be considered rock and roll.
