Wow! First to comment on this? Such an underrated song, maybe because it was created as a follow up to her Downtown hit. But I think this song has a personality all its own. You might soar with Downtown but song is a rocker with ferocity. Intensely good! |

What a shock but a delight to be the first on this website to comment on this song. I think the meaning is fairly straightforward. But from what I have gathered it was written by the Doobie Brothers piano player and lead singer Michael McDonald. He partly got inspiration from his sister Maureen who had written a college essay. The line, "Take this message to my brother,” comes straight from the essay. It is about living in the poverty and despair in the inner city. It addresses people who live in much better circumstances: "You don't know my kind in your world"). |

I once heard, but I can't find it online now, that part of the inspiration for this song was that African Americans often found their gatherings hassled by the police in New York. But they found that if they did rooftop gatherings, they were left alone, the police unaware of the gathering. I just can't seem to find it but I think it was one of the Supremes who said this in an interview. For me, it made this song even a little sweeter. |

Such a beautiful song. I remember when I heard it the first time (at least a portion of it) when I saw the movie Twins with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito. I was not a big fan of the movie but during the bar scene this song was featured in I was gobsmacked. I couldn't shake it. I couldn't believe such a gem was in the middle of a film I was pretty indifferent to. It was some time later I learned the song was sung by (the late) Nicolette Larson and the guitar solo was by Jeff Beck. I hear it is not available on iTunes. Too bad. But there is YouTube. |

I really didn't think much about this song when it was released in 1988 until my now late brother and a friend told me how much they liked it and it reflected their feelings for finding the right woman, a livelong love. They said it in a light-hearted way but I could tell they were also serious. It was pretty much of a mantra for them and both of them were married within a couple of years, loves that withstood the test of time. Today it especially reminds me of the brother I lost and miss. |

I can understand there not being a lot of interpretation comments on this song is just a straight-forward love letter without any obscure lyrics. But I am surprised that it lacks many responses as it is a beautiful song. For the longest time thought I thought it was a Roy Orbison song. Obviously I wasn't listening real closely. In the words of Bruce Springsteen, "Nobody sings like Roy Orbison." I think it is clear this song is at least an homage to him. |

Snow, especially in this song because it takes place on Christmas Eve, represents the joy of the holiday season, family, beauty, happiness (White Christmas, etc). The rain represents sadness, loss, loneliness - Rainy Days and Mondays (Always get me down). He had probably been able to put her out of his mind for all those years and then seeing her again was reminded of the sense of a love lost which really can make you sad. Hopefully just sad enough to be poignant, not depressed. To love anyone brings pain that "hurts so good." |
