Depeche Mode – Enjoy The Silence Lyrics 13 years ago
Here's my take: Martin's songs usually describe two or more things at the same time. End of a relationship/end of life. Loving a person/loving religion etc. (John the revelator describes John the Baptist but it's also a metaphor for our ugly legal society). Yes, Enjoy the Silence is a love song but here's the twist...is the song describing the joy of loving and embracing someone (all i ever wanted/needed is here in my arms)? Or is the song describing an addict's love for injecting heroin (again...all I ever wanted/needed is here in my arms). ALL HE EVER WANTS OR NEEDS IS TO STICK HEROIN IN HIS ARMS PEOPLE!!!!

I'm sure when Dave was in his bad drug days, he would chuckle to himself as he sang that line. I've never tried heroin but I bet that as you are coming off it, the sound of someone shrieking at you to wake up would come crashing into your little world too. It describes to me a heroin addict who is madly in love with the girl. All he ever wants is to hold her in his arms, but he also wants the heroin in his arms too.

Depeche Mode – Never Let Me Down Again Lyrics 13 years ago
I heard that Martin wrote the lyrics while on a plane (we're flying high, we're watching the world pass us by) while putting lyrics together describing one of many disagreements within the band. He was struck by the similarity between handing over your trust to a "best friend" to passengers having to totally trust the pilot. I always felt this song described the challenges of a Rock and Roll lifestyle and the disagreements and forgiveness between Martin and Dave. "I hope he never lets me down again" alludes to past errors that may or may not reoccur. Martin runs Depeche Mode. Dave probably was a jerk about something and then realized his errors. It seems to me that Dave is being reminded that he is not in charge, Martin is: "as long as I remember who's wearing the trousers". I find that there are a lot of songs that relate to Dave's drug habit but Dave didn't write until after he was clean. I think Martin wrote some of the songs from Dave's perspective...but that's another thread!
