A.C. Newman – There Are Maybe Ten or Twelve... Lyrics | 8 years ago |
I really enjoy this song. It seems like the lyrics could be interpreted a few different ways but the one that rings the most true to me is as follows: "there are maybe ten or twelve things i could teach you..." This verse strikes me as the author talking about both his own knowledge from his life experience as well as having children or young people who look up to you and wanting to impart on them the best knowledge possible but understanding that there are still many things about the universe you just don't fully grasp. "once there was a haunted loop of your deep fallen tears..." Now we come to a bad breakup/relationship where someone has ended a relationship (maybe the author) and he's not sure that it's right thing to do, in fact, even as he's moving out he's still knows he hasn't said the "right words" to convey how he felt. finally "and the eyes they were a color i can't remember which says more than the first two verses..." time has passed and the author has moved on. He used to feel so strongly for a person but now realizes he can't even remember the color of her eyes (something he must have looked at everyday) It shows that the feelings of guilt and despair that he used to feel have gone away and he's completely moved on with his life. "and it is the devil you know..." This is either the author acknowledging that he and the other were at least close at one point OR he's talking about how much harder he was on himself at the time. Either way, its someone who truly knows and understands you that can injure/wound you much deeper than those who don't. make of that what you will!!! best! |
Weird Al Yankovic – Truck Drivin' Song Lyrics | 13 years ago |
its just an up-beat "classic" country tune. Weird Al's lyrics make this song golden. Take a Listen!!! |
Claudia Brucken – Guilty Lyrics | 13 years ago |
this song plays at the end of L.A. Noire. If you play the game you will understand. |
Sundowner – The Sea Of Lights Lyrics | 13 years ago |
It's too late for old dreams All my life I made excuses Recent nights obliterated Sea of lights shining on |
Sundowner – As The Crow Flies Lyrics | 13 years ago |
just a song about looking ahead and realizing that you never know whats coming...no matter how good or bad you may see things up to that point. |
Mason Jennings – Crown Lyrics | 13 years ago |
This is such a good song that it merits lyrics corrections. I took the train up from Illinois I was followin' through on a letter you sent. I always feared that you'd be true, true to yourself to the bitter end. Just kinda happened, or so she said, she was drinkin' and lonely and you know the rest. And he meant nothing, he was happenstance, she says, she loves me still and wants a second chance Chorus: I don't want to be together, I don't want to be apart, I don't want none of this love for ya honey deep deep down in my heart. Where is my golden crown that you took and passed around, there's no telling what a man might do with a life like this when it all falls through. Chorus You were my dream come true, can't you see what you put me through? The love that tears me apart still beats deep deep down in my heart, deep deep down in my heart |
Margot & the Nuclear So and So's – Jen Is Bringin' the Drugs Lyrics | 13 years ago |
eh, this song doesn't do anything for me. It seems like the writer isn't that great of a lyricist. He uses a lot of decent metaphors...but they feel tired and cliche here. |
Dropkick Murphys – Hang 'Em High Lyrics | 13 years ago |
i don't think its being specific. just a song about underdogs triumphing over the favorite. |
They Might Be Giants – Particle Man Lyrics | 13 years ago |
This is from a link posted a long time ago...if anyone would have read it...well that would have been nice. In an interview with Peter Koechley We pretty much write these songs and let other people figure them out. I remember one thing that went into it was that we were watching Night of the Hunter or something on TV and somebody commented that Robert Mitchum reminded them of a triangle. Something about his body type. He seemed like this kind of evil triangle. That was one of the things that went into the song. [People said that the triangle represented] the three branches of government or the holy trinity but that's not what it is at all. Actually, "Particle Man" is a song. Any meaning gleaned from its lyrics exist only in the mind of the listener. All meanings are correct. All meanings are bunk. |
Murder by Death – Kentucky Bourbon Lyrics | 13 years ago |
such a great little intro to this album! |
AJJ – Ladykiller Lyrics | 13 years ago |
This is one of those songs that is so upbeat and addicting at its root that you feel the need to share it with all...yet the violent lyrics against women put you in danger of being seen as that weirdo guy who likes really violent music. Poppy/happy music with sad/violent lyrics can not be beaten! |
NOFX – Cheese / Where's My Slice? Lyrics | 13 years ago |
The song does not apply to all groups who are currently receiving "equal rights" protections under the law...that would presume that NOfx are against those sorts of things...looking at their ideological make-up i just don't think that is the case. Junkie has it right...the song is refering to a specific kind of person (or specific person in this instance)...the type of person who not only complains about the "system" but also abuses it. |
Andrew Bird – Fake Palindromes Lyrics | 13 years ago |
by saying that someone shouldn't try to write about things they don't fully understand on all levels you are destroying the basis for creative writing. Also, isn't it a bit condescending to assume that Andrew Bird is simply including a science term to be hip??? The guy has tons of successful (and wonderful in my opinion) songs i think its more likely that you are trying to be offended by something for no reason. |
Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire – Ides Of Swing Lyrics | 13 years ago |
i've been listening to Andrew Bird for a while now and some how this album slipped past me. It has moved in to a nice spot in my favorite albums collection. Each and every song is as brilliant as the next. |
The Dresden Dolls – Sex Changes Lyrics | 13 years ago |
The song is ripe with double meaning. Not surprising considering Palmer is dating Neil Gaiman...the song is about the way sex can change a young girls life. (mostly for the worse) though a loose reading of the title/song could easily make it about a man/woman deciding on a sex change operation. Very Clever writing. |
The Dubliners – Foggy Dew Lyrics | 13 years ago |
The Song is about the 1916 revolution in Ireland...but the song is about more than that. The song speaks to Irish citizens who were leaving Ireland to go off to fight for Britain in World War 1. The Irish republicans urged citizens to stay at home and fight for the cause of Ireland, rather than give their lives for England. This culminated in the rebellion that was eventually squashed after a week or so...but not before the world took notice. |
Good Riddance – Mother Superior Lyrics | 13 years ago |
and nobody trust that man when he puts the rifle in your hand sings you songs of pageantry and grace and how much you want to bet on the other side there's a man with twice your pride and he'll put you feet first in an unmarked grave. beautiful song that may carry more weight today, than when it was actually written. The song is refering to the ways Americans fail to see the "truth" of war. We are taught that "we" are good that "we" are right and that others are less and wrong. Its never that simple and Good Riddance points out that whatever source of pride and bravery we have others also have...and that we actually fight for much less than some others do. It points out the way wars are waged by powerful faceless persons and fought and won/lost with the blood of men and women bound to a very similar destiny. |
Sundowner – Baseball's Sad Lexicon Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Good call posting the link to the wiki page. This song is a musical version of a poem written about a series between the Giants and the Cubs. The writer is a Giants sportswriter who was amazed by watching the Cubs infielders great defense during the series. Great piece of history put to music. Way to go Chris! |
Defiance, Ohio – Oh, Susquehanna! Lyrics | 13 years ago |
the bodies line is directly addressing "what would they do with bodies dug up" but it also speaks to a greater question of the past. What happens to the bodies, faces, names, places, of the past as we carry on into the future...they are largely forgotten and people never stop to reflect on the change or if we are better off now...or why we changed in the first place. To me "What did they do with the bodies" is a larger plea for the whole song about what happened to our past and the void that they feel they are missing from their childhood. |
Swingin' Utters – Tell Me Lies Lyrics | 13 years ago |
This song sums up the entire DIY attitude that has made the true punk scene a memorable part of our history. I'm at a junction But I just don't know which path I'm pround of all the work I've done But it never seems to last It's not for money it's for love And it just might break my back Sometimes it feels as though Something might go my way I'll never give it up Too many things I've yet to say I've done it by myself And I can do it all again simply put...and beautiful. |
NOFX – Happy Guy Lyrics | 13 years ago |
NofX is not friendly towards religion...however, i imagine like anyone they have mixed/changing feelings over time. Fat Mike probably knew someone who lived a very religious lifestyle, and even though Mike disagreed with him and thought of the guy as foolish he saw how happy the guy was in his actual life. The song implies that we should all follow our own path..and that happiness is in the eye of the beholder, we are all flawed and should try to find our own way to happiness. If the man finds comfort, peace, and happiness in religion who are WE (fat mike) to judge him..."he's just a man" |
David Rovics – Henry Ford Was A Fascist Lyrics | 13 years ago |
how come no one has commented on any of Davids songs!?! This is a great song. Great political folk rock that has a strong point/meaning but still portrays that happy upbeat folk feeling. |
Destroyer – Your Blood Lyrics | 13 years ago |
It seems to be a tribute to the art and artists that came before him that he respects....both those that he lifts things from and those that he doesn't. |
Okkervil River – Black Lyrics | 13 years ago |
i also thought about this line for awhile. Eck has a decent possibility. I went at it a little different...i thought about it as the way the guy/dad/step-dad said her name while he was f*cking her... so he's not really saying for her to say his name in a "sexual manner" but he's calling for her to do to him what he did to her....ie F*ck him. So he says, "You should say his name the way that he said yours." meaning screw him the way he screwed you...which he directly says later on in the song...but maybe i'm reading it wrong. |
Okkervil River – Black Lyrics | 13 years ago |
evidence that points (directly) to molestation and not just a broken heart. but I can still see where you loved yourself before he tore it all down. April 12th, with nobody else around; Or Id call, some black midnight, fuck up his new life where they dont know what he did, tell his brand-new wife and his second kid. Though I tell you, like before, that you should wreck his life the way that he wrecked yours, you want no part of his life anymore. these are the two most obvious. If the singer/speaker is really contemplating ruining someones new life over a broken heart from childhood i suppose that would be a totally different song...that would say something about the girl being childish and the boy being petty...i don't see either of those here. This is clearly something that has the girl upset and the guy ready to drive across the country to cut someone down (if it would help...which he knows it won't.) |
Okkervil River – Black Lyrics | 13 years ago |
the truth is that life is not black and white....this is an issue that could cause real conflict in a relationship. Two parties with different ideas of how you should deal with abuse in your past. His GF wants to move on and not reopen that period of her life (whether its irresponsible or not...she doesn't want to walk back through that door and bring back those memories) where as Sheff seems to dwell on the idea of his GF/WIFE/Loved one being abused...and wants revenge. |
Okkervil River – Black Lyrics | 13 years ago |
nope, its black midnight. Meaning in the darkest part of the middle of the night. |
The Dead Milkmen – I Dream of Jesus Lyrics | 13 years ago |
The Dead Milkmen have one of the best story telling styles i've ever experienced. Their minute attention to arbitrary detail is their hidden gem. |
The Dead Milkmen – Big Deal Lyrics | 13 years ago |
The Dead Milkmen working their magic by somehow inspiring hope while sounding hopelessly depressed. |
The Dead Milkmen – Beach Party Vietnam Lyrics | 13 years ago |
"Hey Frankie, aren't you going to give me your class ring? I'm afraid i can't do that annette...why not? CAUSE I DONT HAVE ANY ARMS AHHHHHHH!" I can't tell you how many times i've cracked up to this line. This is another silly Milkmen song taking a rather lighthearted look/poke at the Americans view of war in Vietnam. |
The Dead Milkmen – If You Love Somebody, Set Them on Fire Lyrics | 13 years ago |
This song (title) is a parody of the Doors "Light My Fire" ... other than that its just a silly song about a kid who enjoys lighting things on fire. The Dead Milkmen songs are generally hilarious...sometimes political...but mostly just very enjoyable. |
The Dead Milkmen – Dean's Dream Lyrics | 13 years ago |
A classic Dead Milkmen song. Its just a vivid recollection of a really strange dream. Something that everyone can relate to. |
The Clash – Garageland Lyrics | 13 years ago |
the line "An' someone just asked me if the group would wear suits" I've also heard this was someone from the Clash's record label that suggested they should wear suits to go on a show for a performance. Strummer scoffed at the idea because he thought it was ridiculous that they would doll themselves up for an audience any differently than they did every other night. like the before mentioned poster said though, i could also see it being a dig at Mods. |
NOFX – Stranger Than Fishin Lyrics | 13 years ago |
seeherpee is exactly right. NOFX love to pun on Bad Religion stuff...this is not meant to be taken as a shot. The two bands have long been friends...or at least friendly. When i saw NOFX about 6 months ago they stated, "We are by far the best band to ever play in this city....wait...has Bad Religion played here???....okay we're the 2nd best band then." |
NOFX – New Boobs Lyrics | 13 years ago |
how did he leave off the end of the song??? Best part hands down! Yes, this song is about a woman who thought getting larger breasts would solve all her relationship/image/emotional problems....and guess what...it doesn't. |
NOFX – Mattersville Lyrics | 13 years ago |
The 2nd to last line should be Nathan, Matt, and Dan are passing out...this is a reference to Alkaline Trio (their 3 members at the time) who were spending a lot of time in California hanging out with the Fat crew. |
NOFX – I, Melvin Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Eric Melvin finally gets his due with a song. Probably the most recognizable 2nd guitarist in Punk history...without Melvin, NOFX isn't the same. |
NOFX – Glass War Lyrics | 13 years ago |
The song is very simply refering to Class warfare and class inequality in America. Glass War makes it a bit more clever...and somewhat metaphorical as we are watching Fat Mike create a metaphor out of a very obvious class war. |
NOFX – The Black And White Lyrics | 13 years ago |
There is a missing line. After "But what she really hates is sex" comes Erotic images oppress and debase women as a whole. One of the more meaningful older NOFX songs. It deserves more attention! |
Mason Jennings – Ulysses Lyrics | 13 years ago |
is the second line "mother well led me to believe" as in his mom.... or is it Motherwell led me to believe all my questions would be answered... as in Robert Motherwell the abstract artist. I thought the actual person made a bit more sense than his mom telling him Ulyses would answer all his questions...though i could be wrong. |
OK Go – Louisiana Land Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Great Song! Written for a compilation that i'm pretty sure went to benefit victims of Hurrican Katrina in New Orleans. This is a song about how the average public are often ignored by the government, while the same average people are often required to step in and help the rich and powerful when they need it. |
The Mendoza Line – Catch a Collapsing Star Lyrics | 13 years ago |
This is such a great song most likely about the relationship between the singers. A couple of corrections. I'm fairly certain the first line of the verses is "On the Margins, in revisions." and in the 4th verse the line should be "Slurred your words, confused your thoughts" .. not splurged. |
Woodbox Gang – Shadow of Tom Lyrics | 13 years ago |
This song is about Tom Waits. |
Billy Bragg – Waiting for the Great Leap Forwards Lyrics | 13 years ago |
A political song that is so well written that Billy can literally make it span across time just by tweaking a few lines here and there. Even without the changes the song is still very relevent today. "Mixing Pop and Politics, they ask me what the use is." Such a great line because people generally assume knowledge of pop culture denotes a somewhat 'ignorance' in serious matters such as the politics of the world. (IE the American TV culture)...however Billy Bragg shows that the two things are not so different..and that the understanding and caring about these issues is in the hearts and minds of each and every person who cares to look. |
Hoots And Hellmouth – Three Penny Charm Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I'm not the biggest H&H fan, but this song is fantastic. It just seems to be a sweet yet somber look at love between two people (through the eyes of one) that still seems to be infatuated with another...though he's willing to lustfully move on to another. due to the title being "Three Penny Charm" i've looked for loose connections to the great play "Three Penny Opera" though their doesn't seem to be any. |
Adam Green – Bleeding Heart Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Sometimes I wonder if Adam Green ever looks up his own lyrics on songmeanings and says, "hmm, thats an interesting observation about what i was thinking when i wrote this." His lyrics are some of the best juxtapositions i've ever seen. On top of his wonderfully random lyrics he also mixes often depressing or even nonsensical lyrics with overly poppy music, making for one confused listener...and one pleased soul. ENJOY!! |
The Lawrence Arms – Quincentuple Your Money Lyrics | 13 years ago |
This is a song about growing up and seeing opportunity crumbling around you. The lyrics bring up lots of different specific images but mostly paint a picture of short comings/failures/times when the writer went against the grain of normal society. The scene about the cops and fences and lightposts is just a quick insightful comment about how society has changed as the writer has grown. A short time ago in his childhood the park was a lost continent (also a significant place for a child) now when he looks at it he see's how the city has tried to "protect" the park by putting up fences, lights, and more security. TLA seem to imply that as you get older you struggle to hold on to your young self (or at least your hopes) and eventually you get to the point where you accept that you are older now and must "accept defeat" and move on with your life (without your dreams). "Losers like me" seems to imply that the Larry Arms are not of the group who let go of their dreams...thus they are seen as immature people who are somehow less than "grown up" ... however they seem to find solace in the fact that they understand this above the others and enjoy the circular motion of their life. |
The Lawrence Arms – An Evening Of Extraordinary Circumstance Lyrics | 13 years ago |
This song is about the larry arms members growing up and into young adulthood. Its a very relatable song for kids today as the themes dance through video games, boredom, the idleness and hopelessness of youth...etc. The first song on the first album of a truly great band. one quick correction....im fairly certain the line is, "watch my favorite shows, then watch some informercials, then watch some TV snow." (a line that most likely barely makes sense to younger kids....from a time when TV stations didn't run 24 hours. Many would run until 2-3am and then would turn off their signal thus creating the essence of "late-night TV Snow") |
The Lawrence Arms – A Wishful Puppeteer Lyrics | 13 years ago |
A couple of corrections. "Chest Pain, i'm trembling." (this is a fairly often theme mentioned in Chris's songs....ie chest pains from smoking/drinking.) (a window setup groaning to the clutch the clutch has always been right there for him) This line should be, "A window sitter grown into a crutch, the crutch thats always been right there for him." |
