People In Planes – Penny Lyrics 13 years ago
Well since the song's name is Penny then I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that the penny is the machine, and pennies also happen to be a different color than the rest of the currency. It also happens to be worth the least. The real question is what are the two tasks it takes on -- this machine which was created (taken off the line) to perform one task at a time?

I see the two tasks as currency and control. On the one hand money is economic and on the other hand it is political. Since it is a machine and only meant to perform one task, its job is impossible and failure is inevitable.

Of course it has to do with fisting. The most accurate interpretation IMO then read packyjoseph's reply to treestump at the very top.

And how are you going to mention drug addiction and then call us gutterminded? Speaking of social-commentary, I think this right here says alot about the viewpoints Tool writes about. Its okay for him to write about a drug addiction, one of the worst things to ever experience, but its not okay to write about fisting as a metaphor for going to extremes with everything?

I think its fitting that he used a sexual metaphor because what do people seem to relate everything to nowadays? Sex.

I'm mad at myself for understanding this song. Now I think we should all treat Tool as something more than a band, respect what they have to say, and make some changes!

No shit (pun intended)! Of course they are both joking. Can you not take the sarcastic nuance for what it is?

Andrew Bird – Scythian Empire Lyrics 13 years ago
I believe you are right (see my interpretation above)...exactly. The proud new generation that prances around saying they are "informed" and pretending to give a shit.

Also when you boil it down, your one sentance interpretation is spot on.

But look at things this way. There are exceptions to what I am about to say (2pac and michael franti who don't sacrifice artistry for directness), but in Bird's genre of music upfront politically charged lyrics would not fit. He sacrifices a lot of message for artistry.

Thats a sad thing when people brush off artists like Bird as just artists. It would do people some good to heed their words.

But I don't agree with you on this: that educated artists like Bird should pander to the anti-intellectual culture created in part by the neocons and partly by the pop-culture which they participate in.

Andrew Bird – Scythian Empire Lyrics 13 years ago
Scotch Guard is also a water proofing agent. He might mean that when our modern day man made things (computers in this case) come in contact with the natural elements (rain in line 1) they are no match them. Nor can halliburton attache cases (computer hardcases) protect things from the elements.

The above offers a view into an exiting empire..such as America or the like. When exposed to nature, it stands no chance. It will eventualy return to the earth and become an unknown empire such as those that were like the Scythian empire.

Although I am a huge Andrew Bird fan, I'm still not too familiar with his work so take what I've said as a starting off point for your own interpretation.

Dave Matthews Band – Bartender Lyrics 13 years ago
Haha yea it seems that way. I think its partly a business thing; mainstream music seems almost unable to sing openly about God for fear of losing their fanbase or crossing over genres.

Either that or they are just more talented.
Besides. Christian bands have christianity in the forefront of their songs. Its usually about praising God.

Nope. I think its kind of a plea to be truely saved.

He wants the wine that saved Jesus, but he is being drunk by the wine that strung Judas from the devil's tree.

Dave Matthews Band – Lying in the Hands of God Lyrics 13 years ago
Imp20, you said it. Love/"God" is not something to be attained but experienced, and once you are about to do that like he has done then "...tears of joy run down your face".

Sermon's are more about knowledge of the religious institution than they are worship, love, and building a close relationship with God. Sermons are for those who are..well..lost on the right track searching for something they already have but haven't unleashed.

This version of loving God is alot like zen buddhism in that when trying to explain it to others you find your words going around and around in circles because there is no good way to explain something so profound. It is beyond our scope of understanding, and therefore experiencing it fully comes with knowing that you will never know where to find "it" (whatever it may be).

Im done... :)

Its not about love or no love. It's about opening yourself up, feeling and experiencing real love for yourself, the world and God. Its about not being the habitual christian. Most importantly its about not sitting here like we doing searching for something that can only be found within us. You have what you need so let it out.

Dave writes big songs...especially on this album so think

Dave Matthews Band – Squirm Lyrics 13 years ago
Well...yea, but I wouldn't get the wrong idea. I've spoken with Catholic priests that say they are against the modern institution of religion, not religion itself. Religion is about God the Creator not the mad-made institution. Can you name a problem that didn't come from the institutions of government, religion or economics? No.

Andrew Bird – Imitosis Lyrics 13 years ago
In regards to the title I think its actually pretty self-explanatory; the prefix "im" means the opposite of so imitosis is basically when a cell (or in the context of the song, a person) doesn't multiply and is "...basically alone".

I think he means that people are all disconnected and alone. Do I agree? No, but thats a different story.

Michael Franti And Spearhead – Time To Go Home Lyrics 14 years ago
As much as I am with you, you can't blame those is their "high seats of power". They percieve things differently. However wrong it may be, they do not see it that way. They have to see people as expendalbe in order to function. The point of music like this should not be to instill hate these people but pity. See the bad and be angry, but if you want to change it keep it constructive. Not at all saying you were think this way. Its really just for anyone that will end up reading this.

Please please please don't just sit listen to a song as and blow it off as just a song yall. Its much more than that. For artists like Franti, these songs show us our lost love for humanity. If everything over time (or at least most) sees and believe this then change will happen! Stay strong

Tool – Forty Six & 2 Lyrics 14 years ago
First off. Aboriginals is a modern term. think of it not so much as just Australians, but lesser evolved people of the past (those with 44). Dont get hung up on human made labels. Think outside the label.

And on that note of thinking outside the box.
Let me share an observation and question inspired by TaintedDeity's rebuttle.

Jungian theory stresses that people focus too heavily on science and not enough on spirituallity (label it what you may but dont think religiously here).

This is just one out of millions of examples of people relying on scientific theory that is supposedly holding us back according to Jung.

How do we know he is not right?

I am a Anthropology/Philosophy double major right now if it helps for me to qualify myself.

John Frusciante – Central Lyrics 14 years ago
Every song does not have a grand statment, and at the same it time every song is a grand statement. I take this simply to mean that life and people change always so there there is no center. Calling yourself one thing denies yourself the possibility of being anything outside of that.

Then you have the relation to traveling the universe. As you've probably heard and just brushed off before, "We are the center of the universe". WE ARE NOT! We are a changing part of the universe.

That is what he says in the "thesis" or opening.
He then goes on to say how people are and that he is afraid of that.

PEOPLE ARE NOT THOSE WHO SEE THEMSELVES FROM THE OUTSIDE (OR IN 3RD PERSON). THAT IS HOW WE BECAME CENTRALIZED/LABELERS/PUNKS/SOPHISTACATED/RICH/POOR/HICKS/SPICKS/WHATEVER YOU CALL YOURSELF.

YOUR ARE YOU AND THAT MAY CHANGE BUT WHATEVER THAT IS NOW EMBRACE IT TO ITS FULLEST.

LIVING AS THOUGH YOU HAVE ALREADY DIED WILL ULTIMATLEY FREE YOU, JUST AS BUDDHISM AND CHRISTIANITY AND MANY OTHER RELIGIONS HAVE BELIEVED FOR MANY MANY CENTURIES.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Make You Feel Better Lyrics 15 years ago
if you read the book this will make sense.. I THINK its an ode to his family. Still working through all of it but here is what I have so far.
In the entire song, She is Michigan/ his mother. and we/ are family, friends, and his mother's dog.

So alive I arrive on dust = Claire drove them to michigan while he finishes off the drugs.
You can search my mind For the red on rust...I said= he is still as sharp as ever though
Take me there and she really cares=duh, she is his mother
Lights up for me gonna hear my prayers=same as above

I said now, I'll take it
It's better for you
Somehow we'll make it
'Cause that's what we do

^^^ Claire couldn't handle all the drugs so he finished them on there road trip back to Michigan.

Something out there
Where love is your only friend and = the world of drugs/LA
We are the ones
That will make you feel better and = Michigan/mom/family/friends and dog
Someone to spare
When love is the only end and = all he has is love in LA and his life of drugs makes him abandon his friends
We are the ones
That will make you feel better = same as above
Oh yeah

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Slow Cheetah Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is about heroin. Anthony would always take Cocain and then heroin after to "mellow"/slow him down I guess. Anthony is the cheetah.
Bonnie Brae and 6th is the corner where he bought his heroin.

the burial ground is his usual corner to buy heroin because he knows he is throwing his life away.

its a very old dance its a merry old sound means its his usual thing to do pretty much.

Its so bad its got to be good/mysterious girl misunderstood...heroin...girl =heroin

Any other day and I might play a funeral march for Bonnie Brae meaning if he wasn't craving the high he would think of quitting any other day.

Why try and run away = maybe some other day i'll quit.

THE SPECIFIC TIME THE SONG IS TALKING ABOUT IS WHEN HE CHECKED INTO A CLINIC AND THEN WAS PUT DEEPER INTO SYSTEM AS A MENTAL PATIENT BUT BROKE OUT, WENT TO A BANK TO GET MORE MONEY FOR SOME HEROIN BUT GOT CHASED DOWN BY THE SECURITY AND FACILITY STAFF. HE GOT AWAY AND THE REST IS HISTORY...HE MIGHT HAVE BOUGHT A CAR INBETWEEN THERE TO GET TO THE BURIAL GROUND/6TH AND BONNIE BRAE BUT I FORGOT.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – She Looks to Me Lyrics 15 years ago
"Down in the South seas
Give me your mouth please
Resuscitation is the way I find me
I give you major
You give me minor
Don't fade away
Like an ocean liner
Now"

Is about him going to Hawaii to recuperate with Claire where they would eat swim and have sex.
I give you major/you give me minor is about how he felt she never contributed anything to the relationship and he was the only one trying.
