Split Enz – Six Months In A Leaky Boat Lyrics 3 years ago
@[ilovethetunz15:35323] I so appreciate others who love this song! That said, I think this was written by Tim and the gang, not Neil. At least, Tim was the main name listed, methinks.

@[kevin10873:27473] very unclear what your comment adds to the lyric above. You say lots of errors: what errors?

Chris Merritt – Virginia Lyrics 5 years ago
In this one what gets me (perhaps having gone to high school in Charlottesville) is:
I miss Virginia
But do I really
Cause I remember darkness coming into me there
Trouble breathing even in the fresh air

I love the honesty of many of Chris's lyrical moments. Here he makes a rather hackneyed claim, "I miss the place," then pulls up short and reconsiders: "Do I really?" Honest and complex like life.

Chris Merritt – Tower of Sand Lyrics 5 years ago
OK, maybe I'll get to meaning some time. But for now let me tell you I all but tear up every time I hear these simple words:
Remember lying in feilds of grass?
We should have stayed there.
We should have stayed right there.
We should have stayed right there.

That idea that certain moments surpass all others, they are often the simplest, and the cares and pain that build up all our lives make us suddenly remember, realize, yearn for those simpleperfect moments: If only we could have stopped the world at that moment, that moment there, and just live in that moment forever.

Chris Merritt – Cruise Elroy Lyrics 6 years ago
An AWESOME piece of writing, one of dozens that he has written. That said, I challenge Chris to write one song where he doesn't reference 1) being short on cash, 2) science and scientists or 3) video games. :-)

Chris Merritt – Sarah And The Fabric Of Reality Lyrics 6 years ago
I always thought it was, "How many billion years was I fifteen?" A comment on the subjective, drawn-out perception of time when one is young and unhappy...

I kinda like mine better. :-)

Elton John – Mona Lisas And Mad Hatters Lyrics 9 years ago
Many of these interpretations are really nice and poetic, and while mine is slightly different, it can certainly be combined with others. I always felt this was a song about the underground gay culture in NYC. The sons of respectible businesspeople who are gay (and perhaps some a bit daft) and who are (i.e., were then) closeted and therefore cannot really emerge and take part in life under the daytime sky. It is an affectionate song for that culture and those people.

George Harrison – When We Was Fab Lyrics 11 years ago
Isn't there one moment where the choral voices sing something that sounds like "sl'teeb"? I always figured this was "Beatles" backwards.

Maybe it's just lufhsiw gnikniht on my part.

Elton John – Mona Lisas And Mad Hatters Lyrics 15 years ago
I adore this song, but I always thought the lines:

"Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters
Sons of bankers, sons of lawyers
Turn around and say good morning to the night
For unless they see the sky
But they can't and that is why
They know not if it's dark outside or light"

were about the homosexual underground in NYC early in Elton and Bernie's career. All these guys (who certainly may act or dress pretty strangely or be of uncertain gender), who are sons of respectful people, come out at night to express their true selves that must be hidden in the daylight, but since they only come out in the dark (a possible closet reference?) they have some sort of skewed version of the world. I'll leave it to you to try to apply this to the rest of the song. :-)

Tanita Tikaram – Twist In My Sobriety Lyrics 15 years ago
It may mean something deep, it sure sounds that way (what a voice!), but I HATE the line about "pigging out." It sort of kicks out the mystery of the rest of the lyrics. For me, anyway. Aspiring songwriters, take note: avoid silly idioms about animals in the middle of a cool song!

Trip Shakespeare – The Slacks Lyrics 15 years ago
Live, this song was an absolute riot. The group made it a one-upsmanship fest of machismo as they tried to outdo each other in the story, which is basically three suitors for the same woman, each one insisting that he won her. I've never seen an argument in song before, and this group pulled it off wonderfully, insulting each other in the verses, then dancing in sync the sideways-hoppin' (it was a smal stage) "The Slacks" dance. It was this song that sealed the deal for me on Trip Shakespeare the first time I saw them, at Chicago's Cubby Bear those many years ago.
