The Fray – How To Save A Life Lyrics 4 years ago
@[KeenaChan:31214] I've heard this song a lot, of course, everybody has, but I always misheard the lyric as "But I know how to save a life." I thought that the singer's intervention was effective, even though he and his former friend are more distant because of it.

Today I heard the song again, for the first time since my mentally ill best friend committed suicide. I'd tried to intervene in different ways, even talked him out of it in the past. This time I realized what the actual lyric was, and like everyone else, it hit me. Whether it's the intended meaning or not, to someone who's been there, it's wrenching.

Here's how I interpret the part about "do not spray into eyes": The essential idea being expressed is that you take a risk to procure something vital- a dietary staple to feed your family, or a picture worth a thousand words. And sometimes when you take a risk, you lose.

I've always thought of "taro" as being a double reference to something both vital and dangerous. Taro, the vegetable, is an important staple crop (as someone else here pointed out, in many historically war-torn regions,) but the sap is highly irritating if it gets into your eyes while you're processing it, and it has to be handled with care to render it edible. In fact, when I was first learning about it, the person explaining how to process it told me, "if it gets you in the eyes, you'll regret it." Work with taro enough times, and sooner or later it's going to get into your eyes, just like chili peppers or onions.

Journalism is a vital occupation, and it can be a vehicle for positive change, particularly when it highlights groups that are otherwise voiceless. However, for Taro the person it was fatal. Capa persisted in his vocation regardless, and ultimately died in the field, as Taro had. Put yourself in enough dangerous situations, and eventually you're going to get hurt or killed.

However, because "Taro" has a double meaning, Capa loses his life, but he regains Taro herself- they're together again in death. He gets metaphorically "sprayed in the eyes" by the vegetable Taro, but simultaneously regains the person called Taro.

R.E.M. – Carnival Of Sorts (Boxcars) Lyrics 16 years ago
Chronic is slang for cannabis, and since Athens is a college town, it isn't too far out to imagine pot smoking as part of what Stipe was referring to, both in the song lyrics and the album title.
