Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Where the Wild Roses Grow (feat. Kylie Minogue) Lyrics 16 years ago
He lusted after her from the first moment. She was pure, free and full of vitality. Her virginial state was as much of an allure as her beauty. But from the moment they lay together, that part of her was gone.
On the second day, he's already realised that the previous day, when they were together, is never going to be surpassed. Anything alse will seem cheap next to that. She'll get older, her innocence is fading, they will argue etc. So he invites her down to the river.
Then, to preserve her integrity and his memories, he slays her on the third day.
That's why all beauty must die - if you've achieved perfection, what is left to live for?

Tindersticks – Tiny Tears Lyrics 16 years ago
Agreed. Most of their stuff is achingly beautiful. This seems to centre on the crisis point of a relationship that neither partner can face up to. He knows. She knows. But no one says anything.
I think he's done something unspeakably awful like had an affair with her best friend or drowned the cat in the washing machine. Or the other way around. Exactly what it is we don't know, nor should we.
He's been there, waiting for it to be discussed but she shuns hims, carrying on as normal but breaking up inside. The narrator has no sympathy with him and the moment comes to a head at the end of the song.

Scott Walker – Jackie Lyrics 16 years ago
This song's just amazing. After a bottle of wine or two it sounds even better. Something to do with Jacques Brel I think, but very, very daring for it's time.
For those that don't know, Scott Walker was in one of the biggest boy bands of his day (The Walker Brothers) but turned his back on the whole lifestyle to become a recluse and make the music he wanted to.
This is one of the best. The decadence and bravado of the lyrics rollock along to a thunderous, cantering burlesque horn section. Great to watch porn to.
I know what all the different references are but am not sure of the thread that holds them together. Anyone know?

Four Tops – Bernadette Lyrics 16 years ago
Can anyone manage to time the "Bernadette" right after the pause towards the end when singing along. I've been trying for 15 years and have only done it once.

Suede – We Are The Pigs Lyrics 16 years ago
I believe this is the song that drove Bernard Butler to leave the band. He'd written a sweeping, epic and hauntingly beutiful record, gave it to Brett Anderson to write the lyrics, and he came up with "We Are The Pigs." Preposterous but strangely good record.

Billy Bragg – The Saturday Girl Lyrics 16 years ago
I can't believe so few people have commented on this fabulous song. I've been there, roughly between the ages of 13-17. Sarah Hadfield was her name. It's about the longing, fear and complexity of growing up.
This song's very similar to Walk Away Renee (Billy Bragg not 4 Tops). It's the crush that can both of them know about but he can never express to her because it might ruin it all and the risk of rejection prevents him from facing up to his inhibitions. He lacks the confidence to lay himself bare.
Meanwhile, she thinks he's sweet and leads him on, enjoying the attention and revealing an innocence that is also deeply self-serving.
As they get older she gets a bit loose and he sees her differently. The whole episode was very important in the narrator's life, arousing deep feelings that helped him in later relationships. And a little bit of him still loves her now.

Billy Bragg – Walk Away Renee Lyrics 16 years ago
He's not in love in the soulful, rest of your life sense. It's that awkward teenage crush/obsession thing. He fancies her something rotten so to get to know her becomes her friend. But then he's using the excuse of not ruining their friendship to prevent him from acting upon it and as a mask for his own inhibitions and low self esteem. She knows all this of course and is flattered. She flirts with him because she knows he'll never do anything. She likes having him around - it's good for her ego.
When she goes out with someone else, he's gutted but it's just a matter of time.
Then he realises that it was just a crush. Like when someone says something that lets you down and you see them in a different light. When her hair's cut, she's no longer the girl of his desires and has changed for good. This is funny. And true.
