I know that Muse usually write this "style" of song. but it kinda stuck me. It's a great "high" song. the song just kinda sounds like being high.. so the point: there have been a few soldiers who have recently spoke out about the reason that we're over there: Poppy plants. opium. "there's no one left for us to blame." - we've blamed it on all of these "terrorists" and now we've got not no one left to justify our presence overseas. the singer says. "and you think you deserve your freedom? how could you send us so far from home? when you know damn well we're that this is wrong. I would still lay down my life for you." from a soldier's perspective: he asks the all of the people in the US government included: "do you think you DESERVE your freedom?" do you even KNOW what we've been doing over here? this is wrong, we shouldn't be here. you don't deserve freedom because what we're fighting for is not "freedom" or "democracy." we're killing innocent people, and we know it. "I would still lay down my life for you." saying: even though this is BS, I still took oath to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic;" he wants to defend, help and serve his country. so he will still lay down his life for for our country, although he believes what he is doing is wrong." "you should have known the price of evil, and it hurts to know that you belong here" commiting suicide is a "sin" and so the price of committing this "evil" is that he goes to hell. and "it hurts" them to know that he (I suppose) technecally "belongs there" |

hm. I'm surprised no one has mentioned this. I think it's about a girl with an eating disorder. anorexia nervosa to be exact. "the deeper you get, the farther you fall down"- the deeper you get into an eating disorder, the harder you fall, the more you push others away, the more you distance yourself from everyone. also explains "the closer i get, the more you dissolve." "You're lost inside, You're pale and rib shows"- she does'nt know who she is, she's pale and she looks dead from the lack of nourishment, and her ribs are showing. "I'll bury you, With the demons and the ash."- this is saying that she is going to die soon, and she'll be buried with the demons that told her that she was never good enough, never pretty enough, and never thin enough. "you were the one who made the decision, stuck in a prison, shattered and broken...[etc]" he is saying that she made the decision to have this disorder, and now she's stuck, and when you have an eating disorder it does feel like you're trapped in a prison, and you are broken. you've completely lost who you are. he was expecting to be able to help her, and save her, but all she did was push him away. so now he's fed up, and she can just go save herself. "taught to perish, and fade away, become the haunted, and die as slaves" you teach yourself to starve, you want to fade away and become nothing, become invisible. you're haunted by the demons, and you die as a slave to this eating disorder because it completely takes over your life,it controls every thought, and every aspect of your life. well. thats what I gathered from the song.=/ |

holy shit. tears of joy, (im not going to lie) when I heard this song. soooooooooo damn heavy. and the first time in eight years, that they've legitimately SCREAMED for most of the song. I'm thinking that part of it could be from the guys' perspective of the death of the rev. or at least, I think there's a verse in there paying tribute to him. "pills had a role now there's nothing to take"- the rev overdosed on prescription pills and alcohol. and they're just angry and thinking that god hates them and that the whole world is against them because of the loss of their brother. so basically. I'm thinking its just a huge "fuck you" for everything that has happened to them and gone wrong in their lives. im also thinking that the "god save us" isnt serious, its just like, almost sarcastic maybe? or more like, a hopeless plea. because just so much shit has gone wrong. and theyre convinced that god hates them. |

I agree with many of the interpretations above, and I think that shadow's lyrics can be interpreted in many ways. I'm taking a huge leap here in guessing that maybe one interpretation could be suicide. bear with me. heres where im going with this. "you said the words and my weapon is drawn"- the words could be anything like- the painful words used against anyone who has ever contemplated suicide, or the words. "your best friend is dead" "suffering a man should never know" could be referring to depression. "I do this for my family, my daughter loves her daddy" he stays alive and keeps a happy face for his family,and his daughter. "too many talk down on things they don't know" - so many people talk down on suicide and depression when they don't even know the beginning, they down know the pain, they can't even begin to know what it feels like, and yet they talk down on it, calling it the cowards way out, or calling them weak. "i know what youre thinking, I've been there before, so think of the times...[etc]" now this could be someone talking to the person contemplating suicide. like. hey dude, ive been there. I've been broken, I've been in pain. so just think of the good times and look ahead, its all going to be okay, just hold on. "now I find myself in my own blood, the damage done is far beyond repair, never had much faith...[etc]" they've already pulled the trigger, the damage is done, they're dead and gone. they've never believed in god, or a higher power, or an afterlife. but now they're hoping that something is there for them. and I can't help that think it could be a slight tribute to the rev. "I've sung my last song today" possibly referring to the song Fiction. "remind the lord to leave his light on for me, im free" - remind the lord to leave his light on so that he can find his way home, or to heaven. and that he is free from pain, and guilt, and suffering. I know that this is a CRAZY interpretation. and I'm not expecting anyone to agree with me here xD but it came to me when i was belting along to this song, driving to school today xD and it just hit me. soooooooooooyeah. just a really, really, out there interpretation. |

this is the most beautiful masterpiece I have ever heard. I'm not going to lie, I .sobbed. the first time I heard this song, I still can't listen to it without getting emotional. the rev was my absolute favorite, he wrote the best songs and was one hell of a talented musician. anyways. I can't help but think that this song is a suicide note. at least thats what it sounds like to me. I'm not sure if I think that he killed himself or not, but just based on the song, this is what im gathering. "now I think I understand how this world can overcome a man" - probably one of the most heartbreaking and emotional lines I've ever heard. he's saying that this life is too much for him to handle. "gave you all I had to give, found a place for me to rest my head...[etc]" well, pretty self explanatory. he gave us everything he had, his friends, family, his brothers in the band, his fans. and now that he's dead, he had found peace, reassuring us that he is at peace now, and he is happy. as for the chorus, this is what I'm getting. not that I could or that I would- kind of like. not that he ever could kill himself in the past, or that he ever would. possibly because he was too afraid. let it burn- he wants all of the guilt, and hate, and pain to burn under his skin so he can finally do it. or maybe in a completely different sense- let it burn like. yeah, bring it on, I can handle this pain, I'm strong enough to get through this. anyways. next verse- "left this life to set me free...[etc]" again- self explanatory, he killed himself to free himself of the pain and he took a piece of everyone with him. and he's not going to be in pain anymore, and no one should be afraid, no one should be upset, he's finally at peace. and then the ending- he hopes that everything is worth it, his life, his music, everything that he has done, he hopes that none of it was done in vain. and that everyone is going to be okay, and they'll continue their lives without him, they'll find their own ways because they're strong. well. I know it's lengthy, and even if its not a literal suicide note, this is just what I am personally gathering from the song. |

yeah i could definetly see how this could be a song about loosing a loved one. A rush of blood to my head leaves me winded and wanting to feel the weakness in my body beaten and crushed like my soul. - the shock about finding out about the death of said loved one i walked the street flirting death but it never kissed back. i'm so lucky so cursed so fucked up. But thats the way it goes its in the ebb and the flow - he was so depressed/upset about the death that he wanted death for himself but he didnt get it. i wish that i could give you my time. - him wishing that he could give some of his time to that loved person who died so they could live a little bit longer. the "last angel" could be the loved one "going home" as for the CD. well. its catchy. i do miss the old atreyu though. |
