| As i started reading the comments from the beginning, yours is the best I read so far. As for the sexual note that many seem to find in this song, it might be true, but not without the strong emotional involvement that speaks from the lyrics and melody. Later on I read that apparantly it´s a song about an (ex) girlfriend of matthew, so then your intepretation makes even more sense. | |

| i actually do like this song. But I agree that it ould have been stronger without the repeating of the 'do you know me' part. Still i like the simplicity of the song and how it stands out. I had to laugh a little when i read the lyrics (which i looked up because I found the feel of this song was a little different from most songs on battle studies). I've been listening to john mayer since his first album came out, but besides the fact that he's funny he's also a little 'out there'. He's a little typical, but his quirky streak and the way it shows in his music and style always puts a smile on my face. (maybe it's recognition) | |

I love Feist. And I was going to give my intepretation of the song, but goldenblind221 and some others already nailed most of it. Still.. here's my version. "Oh I'll be the one who'll break my heart I'll be the one to hold the gun. (...) I'll end it though you started it. I think this part indeed refers to her ending the relationship cause it was bad for her or hurting her. But meanwhile it hurts her to have to end it. This could be for whatever reason and the relationship can be in whatever form. Like an unrequited love, but more likely in my eyes.. a person who has been betrayed by their lover. Therefore if she sings 'No one likes to take a test' I think in that part she describes how it feels when you feel torn. When you know rationally that you should let go of the realtionship and your love cause they hurt you, but you still love your partner. For instance: what do you feel when you find out that your lover cheated on you? Especially if the realtionship is good otherwise and you were happy and in love with the person, you can be very torn between your feelings. All the feelings that come with this mix of pain, anger, sadness, relief, fear and love can create a very restless storm of emotions.. hence the line 'I feel it all'. I think the 'wild card inside' refers to her divided emotions and feelings and the outcome of them which is still undecided. Another example of these divided emotions probably shows in the lines where she sings 'I love you more' right after she sang that she would have to pull the trigger on the relationship and break her own heart. The dilemma of: Forgive and love them, or leave and lose them? In some cases you have know other option but to choose for yourself. to let it burn (that's why I love the video, it accurately depictures the feelings she sings about) 'and fly away'. To break free from it all and the painful emotions. The truth lies The truth lied And lies divide Lies divide To me this part obviously describes how things weren't the way she thought they were. And how lies can ruin things, tear people apart and the truth or situation as you knew it will never be as it was before after you find out. When she sings 'I know more than I knew before' she probably refers to something she found out that changed her perspective on the realtionship or situation. Then later she sings 'I don't know what I knew before', what could mean that first she thinks she knows what to do about what she found out, but then it turns out to be more complicated then she thought. But either way, she know she want to 'win the war'. Possibly either the war she got in with her partner or the struggle she has with her own mixed up emotions, probably both. Very strong emotional song, and with such an upbeat tune! |

This song reminds me of the a summerholiday and i will share my story. I met a guy at an international meeting and we kept in touch, developed a thing for each other, but because of geographical distance we were very cautious. Then the summer i visited him we made a roadtrip across his country, all very beautiful, and this song was on the radio often. At the end of the holiday we parted ways again, kept in touch like friends and accepted the fact that a relationship would be too complicated or 'impossible'. We're still on good terms with each other, but i can tell that especially he is still not really over whatever romance we shared. Then to add to it, it turned out that the shoud out louds did a tour that summer, which started in his city and ended in mine. And then of course the lyrics are too accurate. Therefore this song has the memory of that summer written all over it. |

I love this song. It has a pure and almost breakable sound to it. It reminds me of tender feelings that are provoked by the person you love. It actually reminds me of the person I love. But besides that it's just wonderful to daydream music I love the concept of botteling sounds.. |

I actually think that this song is about someone who wants to love but is somewhat embittered and therefore found themselves having difficulties showing his/her emotions and feelings, which is also described in the first two stanza's. He or she wants to open his/her heart but notices that it is difficult to do so. He or she is emotionally stuck. Hence probably also the stanza: "And it is true what you say That I live like a hermit in my own head But when the sun shines again I'll pull the curtains and blinds to let the light in" They want to open their eyes, heart and mind to all the positivity and love surrounding them, but that he/she didnt really see for a long time cause they slowly became more and more embittered and started to shut themselves more and more off from all the beauty surrounding them, probably out of fear of being hurt. Hence the chorus: "Sorrow drips into your heart through a pinhole just like a faucet that leaks and there is comfort in the sound but while you debate half empty or half full it slowly rises your love is gonna drown" In short: they realize that they need to start opening themselves up and let the light in before it's too late. |

I also like the `running away with a beloved one´ concept. But already the more general meaning of the lyrics: the new beginning, spiritual baptism, the longing, the magic and the feeling of going within (or out) yourself to find your own private perfect world is simply beautiful. This is also the first song I ever heard of Ivy and still my favourite. The harmony between the lyrics and the music is magically wonderful and probably what makes it so good. |

This is a great song of a great band. And although everyone should be able to listen to it if they want I usually listen to it by my self. The postal service has something private about their music in general. It´s a combination of their perfectly complicated and yet so clear and poetic lyrics and sound. For me it is the kind of music I play when I´m alone and sit down to think or dream away for a while. I don´t have problems with sharing my favourite artist and their music with others. But I do have problems with sharing my private feelings with the public. For this reason I can understand that not everybody was too pleased when it became so popular. This song always reminds me of the person in whose arms i lay when I first heard it. I fell completely in love with it, as I did with that particular person as well. Although I never listened to the song with him together afterwards and it was not `our song´ it was an absolute torture for me when the song was used for a comercial and played many times on the radio just after we separated. Now that those feelings have faded I can still enjoy the song because the structure and lyrics of it are just plain beautiful. But I have to say that they were even more beautiful when they still had a special meaning to me. Maybe one day I will meet someone who will give this song a special meaning again. Because for me it is a song about soul mates, two persons who complement each other. Something that the video to my opinion unfortunately doesn´t reflect. |

I also love this song. And the first explanation given by beulah really nailed whatever explanation I ever gave to this song. The video is also great. There is no other song that better describes the way I felt when I was with the one person I was most in love with. And I still feel like the girl who is waiting for the final outcome. It really captures the uncertainty that comes with the infatuation and stirred up inner emotions. But then, can you be really that infatuated and moved by a person you are not in love with? And besides, love without pain indeed is not really romance. Because the ones we love most can also hurt us the most. |

This song touched me from the very first moment I heard it. And the first moment I listened really carefully to it was because someone told me to because he really liked it. And although there are many ways to experience the song and its lyrics (which is one of the most wonderful things about it to my opinion), this one person is always in the back of my mind when I hear it. I actually ended up at this forum because I always had the feeling that understanding the lyrics of this song would give me a better understanding of my situation and my feelings for him. Like for many people this song stirs up feelings of pain that I lived through while I was with and without that person. But is it not always true that the people we love most can also hurt us the most, like they have a direct access to our souls? Actually that feeling, of pain and of not being able to live with or without the person, is exactly the reason why I knew that my love for him was real. For several reasons and some unfortunate twists of fate, I can probably never be with him again. But even if he may not have been good for me in the sense that he could hurt me because I loved him so much, the main problem was always fear. Fear of the strenght of the feelings and the impact we had on eachother, for good and ill. Too bad, because in the end, without ever experiencing pain you can not experience true happiness. Like in the song `Only this moment´ by Royksopp: ¨ 'Cause I know I might lose you by taking a chance But love without pain isn’t really romance ¨ |
