Dream Theater – Wither Lyrics 15 years ago
dtfaniam has it right. A lot of artists are intentionally just vague enough to where there can be many interpretations of a work (see: all of art, ever).

My personal take? This is about trauma. I'm a councilor, and this song seems to me to be about someone telling a secret of theirs or just something that's difficult to say.

Nightwish – Master Passion Greed Lyrics 15 years ago
"To my everlasting shame silence took me"

Tuomas feels deep regret at his remaining passive while Marcelo continued to feed off the band and Tarja. He believes that if he had spoken up sooner, the situation wouldn't have gotten so far out of hand and Tarja wouldn't have needed to be fired.

"Seek her
Seduce her
Tame her
Blame her
Have her
Kill her
Feast on it all"

These lines paint an interesting picture. Marcelo both "seduces" and "tames" Tarja. One seduces a member of the same species, but tames an animal (a wild animal, no less). This passage paints Marcelo as a person who seduces wild animals. This imagery is solidified in a line that follows "Have her." Marcelo has gained the favor of the object, and now consummates the relationship. Finally, he is said to "kill her/ feast on it all." Here Marcelo is depicted as killing both a pet and a lover - an animal he won over and a woman who trusted him. Finally, he consumes them, adding a further level of disgust to the scene. It should also be noted that feasting upon this creature completely undermines everything already done. There's no need to tame an animal one is hunting, except for torture. There's no need to seduce a person one will murder, except to terrorize them. Marcelo is depicted as a complete abomination.

PS: I'm sick of comments like "Tuomas's attempt at black-metal lyrics." If you listen to artists, they rarely try to classify themselves so specifically. Yes, Nightwish calls itself metal. They don't really go any further. Metal is metal. FANS call something black metal, death metal, progressive metal, symphonic metal, power metal, etc. Artists, especially ones who expend as much effort as Nightwish does writing their music, just write whatever they think works best.

Dream Theater – Space-Dye Vest Lyrics 15 years ago
I really like all the samplings here. The image I get is of a man on his bed with a glass of scotch channel-surfing, all alone.

"And I'll have no more dreams to defend"

Beautiful use of show-not-tell style. You can read into this line so much. I see a couple arguing about one's ambitions. She wants him to be different but he doesn't feel like he should have to defend who he is or who he wants to be.

"As long as she stays on the page"

This line works well enough alone, but the added meaning from the passage Vozzy posted is intense. This man is staring at a magazine picture, but doesn't trust the girl in it to remain there because he has been wrecked so many times/so harshly in the past.

Dream Theater – Endless Sacrifice Lyrics 15 years ago
I love this song. Especially "someone tell me why...endless sacrifice." What well written lines! So many people can relate to this song on so many levels, and the writing itself is well done. The images, like a thousand burning candles, are so strong. A brilliant light at first, but they all melt and snuff.

Dream Theater – Anna Lee Lyrics 15 years ago
The name Anna Lee is similar to Edgar Allen Poe's Annabel Lee. The Poem, taken literally, is about a man who falls in love with his childhood sweetheart but she suffers an early death. This could be consistent with the child abuse, i.e. Anna Lee's chance at a normal life and a normal love was ended early whereas Annabel Lee's life and love were ended early.

Dream Theater – The Ministry of Lost Souls Lyrics 15 years ago
It's about somebody whose life was saved. The savior died in the process, and she couldn't cope with her life being lived at the expense of another. That inability to cope is her "suffering" that is "all in vain". I think she probably committed suicide. This is supported by lines like "she's prepared to give up everything" and "you would not take it"

Nightwish – The Poet And The Pendulum Lyrics 16 years ago
Edgar Allen Poe wrote a short story called "The Pit and The Pendulum". A man is thrown into a dark room where he narrowly avoids falling into a pit (the fall would have killed him). He then swoons and when he awakes is bound to the ground and sees a pendulum slowly descending until it begins to cut him. At the last second he is saved.

The only thing in this song I still don't get is the part about the shoulder crying.

Nightwish – Crownless Lyrics 16 years ago
I think the chorus has been overlooked in this thread.

"Mine is the earth and the sword in the stone/ Mine is the throne for the idol/ one fleeting moment and it's all gone/ crownless again/ Will I fall?"

This seems to be ironic. The earth is mine because I was chosen by something beautifully magic. But I'm just an idol. Everything will come crashing down. I will lose my crown. I will fall.

I think this song is about how you need to actually do something and put forth effort if you want anything good to last.

I think the riddler is life.

Nightwish – Amaranth Lyrics 16 years ago
This song was really hard for me to figure out. I still don't get most of it. It helps with the video. First, I'ma answer some questions:

1) I don't think the villagers burned the two boys, I think they dragged them out
2) Blackchimera, I think your logic is flawed in that a "hiding amaranth in the land of daybreak" wouldn't be viewed as bad. Maybe that's just my opinion.

"You believe but what you see
You recieve but what you give"

Great line. They're talking about non-believers. In the case of the music video, the villagers believed that the angel was evil, differant, strange, scary. That's what they saw. In the end, they recieved what they gave. They burned the angel, so they lost her. That's actually a highly literal example. I like it.

Here's what I want to know. In the video, the Angel appeared to have had her eyes gouged out. That's undoubtedly symbolic. Additionally, she was wearing pure white. Also symbolic (99.9% of the time white = purity or goodness or refers to purity or goodness ironically. In this case I'm betting it was the former).

The amaranth is representitive of the rain, which is in turn representitive of sorrow. The amaranth never withers, the rain never fades, the rain is "tears of snow white sorrow". Why should we caress sorrow? To get over it? Because we need it?

Why is the sorrow "snow-white"? Does that mean its unadulterated sorrow? Does it mean that the sorrow is for a pure reason? Sorrow for something that is pure?

This song strikes a note with me (BAD PUN ALERT!!!), because I've been in a situation with my hands tied to the wheel, and only after asking who tied them did I realize it was me.

Nightwish – Ghost Love Score Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is pure awesome.

I think the chorus means that he was completely devoted to somebody. The line "If you be the one to cut me I will bleed forever" carries a double meaning of both "if you hurt me I'll never get over it" and "I would remain in eternal anguish for you"

When the chorus changes at the end, it means to me that the speaker was hurt and left to emotionally die, but still remains devoted to (I assume) her.

Nightwish – Higher Than Hope Lyrics 16 years ago
"Your death saved me"

A lot of people get depressed after a close one dies. I find the most effective way of dealing with it is to have a conversation with yourself something like this:

"well, how would it be for them if I had died and they had lived?"
"it would have been anguish"
"then the reason I'm still here is to take this anguish for them. I have to be here to suffer for them"

Aesop Rock – None Shall Pass Lyrics 17 years ago
The chorus, to me, means what goes around comes around. The people you think are strange or below you will one day rise up, and when they do you'll fall down

Nightwish – Live to Tell the Tale Lyrics 17 years ago
I think the scale is whoever the first person is. The smallest thing can set her (I'm assuming her) over the edge, but she's going to struggle and win out. She's doing a hard job, which is why it's a good thing, and "worth being here".

On the second stanza, your guess is as good as mine. White typically represents purity, and whether that's meant literally or ironically escapes me. The second line of the second stanza's pretty obvious. All her childhood hopes and aspirations are crumbling under reality.

The islands filling my mind with blue is one of the weirdest phrases I've seen. Islands might mean seclusion? Maybe she's a pariah or a castaway? Filling my mind with blue could mean going crazy, but blue is a calming color. *shrug*

Linkin Park – Hands Held High Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is not mindless anti-bush rhetoric. This band is simultaneously NOT hypocritical. Perhaps they're the rich, but they aren't asking you to support bush like 99% of the others. They're wealthier people showing support for poor people, not badgering them.

This song's message is like the music video for World on Fire. F***ing amazing.

Rob Dougan – Furious Angels Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is extremely well written. It feels as though (whether or not this is true, but I'm betting 99% on "yes") R.D. thought every single word out. The parallelism and the repeated graphics simlies and metaphors create such vivid imagery that whether or not you can relate to the song, you feel like you're there. And the music fits the words *perfectly*

It's busses.

This song is fucking amazing. I think it's mostly about the American dream becoming perverted and twisted to the point where it is literally the "American nightmare".

I thought it was bedlammed vision. *shrug*. Either way this song is undeniably amazing.

Definately screwed up the lyrics near the end. It's "trying to see eye to eye with the faceless" not "face lift".

Who writes this?

Sketch use your brain and your knowledge of literature. Just look at the very first part of the song.

"The water ain't safe, the land's made of water
I hug a half empty glass my dignity's trying to corner
I'm trying to see the future in a tea cup and a saucer
But I rather be drinking coffee with my cigarette foster"

is essentially saying

"The essence of life is no longer safe, the place you live in is built of this unsafe substance, my mind is pessimistic and we're addicted to things that hurt us."

Nightwish – Nemo Lyrics 17 years ago
Some symbols I think I've got:

Flower withered between pages 2 and 3: In 99.99% of books, the first 2 pages you can press a flower between is 2 and 3 because 1 and 2 are almost always the same piece of paper. The flower is withered because it was pressed so early and then forgotten.

Soothing rain: When is rain soothing? Normally rainy days are distinctly not soothing. Rain is soothing during a drought. I interpret this as saying she's wishng for something to fall out of the sky to nourish her back to health.

Without an honest heart as a compass: Her heart can't guide her

Nemo my name forevermore: It doesn't really matter whether nemo is referring to Cptn Nemo or Oddysseus, they're extremely similar characters. What matters is that Nemo means nobody. Instead of having no name, she is now called nobody. In my opinion, this is worse than having no name at all because at least when you have no name you can get a name. When your name is nobody it's as though you are nobody for the rest of your life.
