R.E.M. – Just A Touch Lyrics 17 years ago
Oh god, I fall of my chair every single time I hear that little "There's someone in our dreams" section. It's the perfect use of self-quotation... I mean right around this point in the album you start to think "gee, these guys sure have changed since their Murmur days" and suddenly, out of nowhere, they quote the melody from Radio Free Europe. Ahh, I digress. I just love that part. Pretty cool song, too.

Barenaked Ladies – A Lyrics 17 years ago
The apparent rumor that every "A" at the beginning of each verse is sung on the pitch "A" is incorrect. I have perfect pitch... it's being sung on an F.

Anyway, not sure how you could compare the Beatles to BNL, because the Beatles had amazing artistic DEVELOPMENT while BNL started out with 2 excellent albums and went straight downhill.

This is an amazing song though. One of the best pop songs every written, in my opinion.

Wow. Nice interpretations, DerUnbequeme.

Steely Dan – Pretzel Logic Lyrics 17 years ago
Well, a man's shoes used to indicate very well what social class he was in. This obviously isn't the case today, when a dirt broke guy could earn some money and realistically spend it on a nice pair of sneaks.

The title is also a play on the popular bossa nova/jazz standard "Begin the Beguine".

Wilco – Spiders (Kidsmoke) Lyrics 17 years ago
Listen to Brian Eno's "The True Wheel" and then this. Tell me if you're thinking what I'm thinking. Yup. Despite Tweedy's (in my opinion) pure creative genious, this has got to be a rip-off. Exact same rythm and best, very similar keyboard line, and some of the guitar sounds that Tweedy makes seem "inspired" by this. Just listen, it's actually pretty funny. Great song, though. Both of them.

R.E.M. – King Of Comedy Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is the first that Monster-Haters name when they complain about the album, but I love it. Starts off with a robotic voice with a banging beat, but a great melody developes, and the ending is great with the harmonies and stuff. Great song. Great album. Heck, they're all great.

XTC – Ladybird Lyrics 17 years ago
Having basically heard every track XTC and Andy Partridge ever made, this still remains one of my favorites. Absolutely beautiful, musically and lyrically. Timeless. It may sound like I'm running out adjectives, but I could go on and on. And yeah, I'm pretty sure Andy wrote this ones while in his hotel, just thinking of something to write. Nothing hidden behind the lyrics, but so what? Excellent song.

XTC – The Somnambulist Lyrics 17 years ago
Just XTC trying to be kinda hip. Heck, they do a pretty good job with it. Wouldn't sound out of place in Brian Eno's 'Before and After Science'.

XTC – Mermaid Smiled Lyrics 17 years ago
For me, this is the colorful imagery from my childhood that returns to me when I visit a place familiar to that time. So, say I go to a beach that I spent a lot of time at as a child, this song may be somewhat close to the feeling that I experience. Obviously, this isn't the meaning of the song for everyone, but it fits me pretty well in this sense.

Pavement – Stop Breathing Lyrics 17 years ago
Sounds an awful lot like the Smashing Pumkins' "Mayonaise", but still a great song nonetheless. Pretty neat thing posted above me, too. Beautiful song.

Nice call on the Hollywood Freaks. ;)

By the way, nice analysis, and you should definitely give this song a listen, one of Eels' best by dar.

Beck – Hollywood Freaks Lyrics 18 years ago
Great, funny song. I'm still wondering, though, what is that person saying in that repeated sound effect? It sounds something like "HEEMMAANUUNNN!!!!!"

Steely Dan – My Old School Lyrics 18 years ago
I actually think the intended focal point is Fagen and Becker's drug bust. Good analysis, though.

Steely Dan – Home At Last Lyrics 18 years ago
I see the connection, but Odysseus knew and was prepared for his arrival at (whatever the name of his home island is -- i forget) for some time, so the whole idea of "Could it be that I have found my home at last" doesn't fit. However, if "found" really means reached, than it makes sense, as Odysseus at one point was minutes away from his island before being blown off course again.

Pretty straight forward... a guy digs his cousin. Hilarious stuff.

Steely Dan – Black Cow Lyrics 18 years ago
I know that a Black Cow is a sort of soda drink that involves Coke or root beer mixed with ice cream or milk. There is also alcoholic versions of it.
