To me the key phrase is the line that starts the chorus - "All By Myself". You're so depressed about your behaviour that you're even contemplating the abondonment of your friends, maybe because you feel you've let them down, maybe because you feel such a twit that you just can't face them. The "Just a Day" title has two levels to me, it was just a one-off, you're hungover and overanalysing, don't worry about it, with the more worrying meaning being that it's just another in a series of regular occurences and if you don't get your act together... So yep, really depressing lyrics to me, but backing a track with a fantastic hook and lots of energy that's more like the night before. Great track. And I love the video - no idea why but I love this style of video... Placebo Running Up That Hill is my current Fave of this style. |

Back in the day, I remember my older brother and sister owning this record. The single sleeve had the lyrics, and this was the first song that I remember reading the words, thinking about the story behind them and singing along... From memory I soon moved on to Adam and the Ants (the album had lyrics for every song! Although my sister had destroyed a few words when she was cutting out the Adam pictures :-). 25 years later and I'm reading the lyrics on this website, mad. [And if that's an embarrasing admision, my first actual record purchase was Joe Dolce. This explains a lot.] |

This song was used by UK television station channel 4 as the bed for a montage of the painful moments (emotional and physical) of the American football season, played after the superbowl. It was in the late '80s, can't remember exactly, but it had me in tears. I worked out what the song was (harder in those pre-internet days) and since then I've bought all the albums and fallen in love with quite a few of Cyndi's songs. This one has always been one of the song's I return to when I'm down, in a similar vein the Don't Give Up by Gabriel/Bush. Processed pop, but still has real soul at it's roots. |

Actually I think it's quite apt that these lyrics have been the focus of abuse from both anti-emo and anti-MCR folks plus the odd disillusioned fan who doesn't get the style of the album. Especially ironic that it's one of MCR's most crossover and least "emo" or alternative songs that has set them up as target for the anti-emo bandwagon. The "Dead and Gone" are the ex-fans who have either abandoned MCR or just moved on. And G's saying thanks for everything, you were part of us, you made us, we loved you and we'll never forget you, but we've our own plan and that might not be the same as yours. As for our "peers", we "could not care at all". "will you defeat them, your demons and all the non-believers, the plans they have made"? Will you follow the crowd, or the marketing men, or the path of least resistance? Or will you actually go with your own dream, your own vision, your own heart and soul? I always think of the bloke in the video as a ex-fan, one's who's given up on the band (died), but is reunited later. So yep you always need support, and you'd never have got to where you were without it, but it's still right to go your own way. And you never know, maybe the path's will stay distant, or maybe they'll cross again - regardless an old friend remains a friend. But that's just my interpretation. Kick ass song and video. Not too keen on most of the album or the later singles until Teenagers came out. |
