I think that this song hides it's meanings mostly in the melody. I think that the first verse is somewhat bashful. The beat is hard hitting with the soft piano overlaying it. It's sort of softening what he's saying, as if he may be joking or taking it light hearted. He's also side stepping his real meanings by saying, "I love this too much," as if he is just enjoying the night. The second verse he's more concise and while the music is basically the same, at the end of the verse the melody changes and the beat is left alone, as if saying, "well as a matter of fact, I love you." It always hits me hard. |

"came into the darkness from out of the blue I don't know much but I know what to do froze in my mind I believed it so long alright I'll admit I was wrong" I think this could be about being in a great mood, but some thought consuming him has caused him to step into the dark; anxiety/depression. "stay out of my nightmares stay out of my dreams you're not even welcome in my memories when things are alright and I want what I got it's only momentarily thought" I believe that he's wanting to get better over whatever thought he has had that has bothered him. He's telling it to stay away from him and that he's alright with his life currently, but that happiness is a momentary thought. "if no one thinks of no one then no one believes in no one and no one fucks with no one when no one's afraid of no one" I'm not sure what to make of this, it seems scattered, maybe it's not. It starts off with me thinking that he believes that everyone is worried only about themselves and has no care to pay attention to others. But then he's turning it into a positive by saying that "at least there's no one to be afraid of." "we've all seen enough now it's time to decide the meekness of love or the power of pride it doesn't matter if you're good or smart goddamn it things fall apart" At this part I feel that he's saying that we're adults now, it's time to choose love or pride, but in the end it doesn't matter because things will fall apart. "let's go for a walk yeah let's go for a drive don't know how to say thanks for being alive let's go for a lifetime let's go for a fling don't know how to say anything" This is my favorite stanza. The line "don't know how to say thanks for being alive" hits home hard. How do you thank someone for being alive? Who do you thank? The end is confusion in his self. |

I think this might be about a couple ready to make the move in together. The first verse talks about saving up for something they need, perhaps she is in a poor living situation and he wants to pay for her (Maybe you can owe me) because he doesn't want to see her living how she is. The second verse talks about how she's anxiously awaiting the move date, but she's scared. She really wants to be there, and he doesn't want to be where he is since she isn't there, but she's nervous. Lastly he tells her that she's welcome over any time, but sometimes she'll have to sleep on the floor. Perhaps he lives with parents who wouldn't approve of them sharing a bed. |

I think that the song is in two parts. The first part is him scared to show his emotions. Eventually the feelings pass and he was never there for her, in her eyes he never tried. The second part is her telling him that their love has run dry, but she'd like another try. She's trying to get back what they had, but never fully showed one another. She ends by telling him that she won't be convinced unless he finally opens up. |

I definitely see the first verse from his view point. That view ends when he says, "I love you, I do" Her view point comes in the second verse and stays until the end. Sufjan is known as someone who crochets and he plays guitar. So it makes sense it's her talking to him. She loves him, but as a brother. He loves her in a different manner, but it's futile. |

I simply wanted to add something that I didn't see anyone else mentioning: "and I sit on all your actions its a birthing game" This line hit me most recently. I believe that the relationship isn't going exactly as he expected for one reason or another. He's thinking about all of her actions that affect him negatively and deciding on what to do. He knows what's right, but he is waiting it out. |

I have to agree mostly with 8394147. I know I shouldn't project personal experiences upon this, but quite frankly it's impossible not to with songs. "and if you turn it on you'd find, I've written you a thousand times You would do anything, you'd give up everything for god knows why I just can't stay till your gone I wont wish you well, I wont see you off, I wont try to call if I see you in my mind, I'll say to you It's not your fault" This part here hits me the hardest. I'm currently dating a girl who could up and move at any moment due to her job. The line "I just can't stay till your gone" resonates the most with me. I'm stuck in this feeling right now of being lost. I don't know if I should stay until the end, or end it now because I can't stand to see the end. That's my 2 cents. |
