I'm a big fan of built to spill music. Let me tell you what I think this song is about, since I'm going through it right now. I believe it is about a breakup, where he loved someone... and then almost like the lights turned on. All the hopes you had for that person, what you thought they were like, what they had given you emotional... in the wrong "blind love" lighting you might miss out on what was there all along. That's the upsetting things about some relationships ending, and what I ultimately feel is being sung about in this song: You miss out on the BIG details because you're blinded by the "sun." All of the sudden after thousands of let-downs by this person you realize all that you've been missing. And you know you're not crazy so you have to use your math, science, and your repressed memories (because they're still there, even though you were blind to them.) You can't read in the dark and you can't fully love somebody and spend your life with someone who has been presented in the dark either. Never, forever... simply put, sums it up quite nicely. And I like that it starts the song out, and then is explained. Because who sits down and explains themselves before they say the most depressing thing? Usually one might say, "I've been lied to, and I feel like shit" then they would explain it. I think this song does exactly that. How wonderful. |

Well, I don't speak German, and neither does my ex. My mom does, so I've always respected and enjoyed the language but as far as speaking or understanding it, I do not.
Still, I plan on putting this on a break-up CD which will be a gift to my ex-lover who left me. i don't care if he doesn't understand. The feeling of this song is in how its sung, not the words themselves. |

sounds like he's living in monterey too. i'm from here, but i didn't grow up here... it seems like everyone has their history, their secrets, and i'm not involved in them. rather than being nice honest people there just seems to be a lot of back stabbing gossip. and it got into my relationship and its always standing in between me and my lover.
this song fits my situation so greatly. how i feel, how i wonder if i should feel at all. should i give him a second chance? what does this town know that i don't know about him? oh... sometimes its great when you find lyrics to match your pain, songs you could never have produced on your own. |

I love the singing in this song... its so harmonious... absolutely love Field Music, but this song is a top on my list.
I am reminded of that wonderful feeling you get when you just meet someone you've had a wonderful conversation with... and you never want it to end... the repetitive nature of the song tends to imply that too, along with the lyrics but that should have been obvious. |

well, fuckyeah... i want to hit him too. well, in my case its a him. he hurt me! i want to hit him... but i can't. i like him. but... hes not perfect, hes still... human.
i enjoy how he admits his perfect girl is probably god. not pointing to religion or anything in the song, just pointing to the fact that hes created this fake ideal in his head... shes not "her" but still, he likes her anyway. |

i agree jakeisgalaco... that line is amazing. its a great way to describe how this person has broken through whatever he is using to protect himself. ah, just what i need... another song to help me describe the issue i've been living with for 3 years now... so many of these lines are perfectly put... so many of them. So much so, I can't believe that this song is real. This is BY FAR my new fav Of Montreal song, the lyrics are freaking GREAT and the song is well played.

I see that the only qualified option would be... RE-VAMPING... don't let something great die with something great. Keep it alive with thoughts and actions and never let that thing/person be forgotten. I'm sure we do things everyday... like... saying... "lalala" which... probably was started by some person who is dead now. And its not like they're really dead... because we still say "lalala" all of the time... even if there is no name to it. Don't be sad... keep the dream alive!

Well, we've all been a bit off topic here... talking about how neat Fugazi is. So anyhow, back to the meaning...
I looked up the word... " folderol" which means...
"Trivia or nonsense; a showy but useless item."
This song is great musicly, but I am always stunned of the thought that goes into lyrics. I would love to have Ian sit down and tell me what these lyrics really stood for. I hate to sound heartless but 9/11 was not the only terrible thing that has happend in terms of war in the untied states and our messed up reactions to it. Maybe hes not even talking about that. Maybe nothing makes sense... I'm confused.

I don't care who wrote it. I still think its a beautyfull song. And if Chris Broach wrote it... all the better because he is amazingly attractive with his YEAH screams. "YEAH!" but that was in Braid so enough with that. "You make me know I've got alot to live for." That sounds like its about a child to me... still a great song... whomever its about. |

I agree, this is a very "cool" song. I can see some hip old guys sitting around in suits and ties smoking a cigar tapping thier feet to this one. Or... it could be used in a movie during that introspective turn to the plot. I like it. It's a sad song, but it has that "oh well" feeling to it, nothing too depressing. |

It sound to me like his better half is getting the best of him, and he'd rather just have that side he dosen't understand go to sleep and be over with. "I wanted her to tell me that she would never wake me." This whole song could be about one huge internal conflict with the sucessfull and sad Elliot Smiths. Thats what I see when I read those lyrics and apply them to my life. So sad... but what an awesome song... what a great gift he had to share with us. |
