John Mayer – Edge Of Desire Lyrics 13 years ago
I really think John is way too clever a writer for what I'm thinking to be a coincidence. Or maybe my brain is just working overtime. But either way...

Has anyone thrown out the theory that this song is connected to "Split Screen Sadness," which I've always suspected is connected to "Come Back to Bed"? I've always thought that maybe CBTB is connected to SSS via the lyrics "I survive on the breath you are finished with" (from CBTB) and "it's only the air you took and the breath you left" (from SSS).

And then you have Edge of Desire which has always reminded me so, so much of Split Screen Sadness via, basically, ALL of the lyrics but mainly the "maybe I'll sleep inside my coat and wait on your porch till you come back home" (from SSS) and "Think I'll sleep in my clothes on the floor" (from EOD). PLUS, "And I know it was me who called it over but I still wish you'd fought me 'til your dying day / don't let me get away" (from SSS) and "I want you so bad I'll go back on the things I believe / There I just said it, I'm scared you'll forget about me." The thing he believes being that he was right to "call it over" and break up with her the first time around but still wants to go back on it, the same way he did before.

AND!!! "Cause I can't wait to figure out what's wrong with me so I can say this is the way that I used to be" (from SSS) and "So young and full of running / tell me where has that taken me / just a great figure 8 or a tiny infinity."

When I first heard Edge of Desire, I was kind of irritated because I thought that maybe John was running out of things to write about. But then I thought to myself that I've always considered him to be a lyrical genius and if he is, in fact, exploring a similar theme in this song, it's probably intentional. And if they are connected, I think that's awesome. I've always loved how City Love and Covered in Rain are connected!

I don't know. All this talk about beds and sleeping on floors and breath... If they are connected, EOD makes a whole hell of a lot more sense to me, especially the line about the bed spinning on its axis and "finding me on yours," which always threw me off. I think that what he's getting at is that he's right back in the same situation as SSS talks about and is wishing for some magic to occur that will transport him to his loved one's bed the same way he did when he couldn't find a flight to get to her in SSS.

I wonder if Edge is intended to be his swan song so to speak, and is him finally giving up on this relationship (hence the setting fire to everything). Not that these songs were written about the exact same relationship/person, but maybe he just wrote it to seem that way because the situations are similar? Does that make sense? That makes this song ten times sadder for me thinking about that.

Either way, I'm choosing to believe they're all connected and this was intentional, and he is a brilliant songwrite.

Darren Hayes – I Like The Way Lyrics 14 years ago
vkawaii-

You may have heard people speak about the split between the intellectual part of their brains/themselves and the emotional part. The intellectual part is the more rational, logical, lucid part of themselves while the emotional is the heart, the feelings, the sentimental. Some may label it the "bad," illogical and/or irrational side, but I don't necessarily believe that to be true. I think that either could be considered "bad," unhealthy, illogical, or irrational if you are invested fully or mostly in one side or the other, with one side influencing your actions, decisions, etc. It's all about balance between the two.

Having said all that (I hope I'm making sense!), I believe that Darren may be saying one of two things. The song is essentially about a disconnect, giving in to desire in an unhealthy way, and prioritzing and/or being driven by the emotional rather than a balance of it and the intellectual. So when he says, "And now I try to intellectualize," he could mean that he knows this is wrong and he is trying to communicate it to himself and others as an intellectualized process in an attempt to avoid judgment, persecution, facing the reality of the situation, etc.

Or he could be trying to intellecuatlize what is going on in an attempt to see the reality of the situation, get some control over the emtional side, and set himself on the right path. And that is the "glimmer of hope" in the "bad man's eyes."

That's just how I understand it anyway. (:

The Sounds – No One Sleeps When I'm Awake Lyrics 14 years ago
In an interview with Shockhound (you can google it) Maja said the song is about their dreams about becoming a successful band. And even though the journey to become one has been hard and hurt so bad at times along the way, they would still do it all over again.

Recently though, this song took on a slightly new meaning for me. I've been struggling with very severe depression that I believe was set me off this time around by my turning 29 soon and feeling like I still have no purpose, reason for being here, no direction, no idea who I am, etc. (along with other very serious underlying issues). I have/had all these dreams and aspirations but have never quite been able to make them a reality due to my knack for screwing up and making bad choices. I finally got to a point where I was at the end of my rope and this song was a major inpsiration to me to hold on and keep going.

-
The dreams I dream the song I sing for you
They’re coming from my heart
Is my message getting through?
You know it hurt so bad just like I knew that it would
But I’d do it again, do it again if I could
Do it again if I could
-

That part was really inspirational to me because I feel like she's saying that this song was written especially for me and telling me that she knows what it's like to be in this place and that even though it was tough and "hurt so bad," she'd do it again because in the end, it was worth it and that I will eventually feel the same if I can hold on. Through the verses, I feel like she's basically talking about this experience of her and other people being lost and what it feels like.

This part is super interesting to me because of how this song has recently taken on a different meaning for me, the first 2 lines in particular:

-
‘Cause the dreams that I dream and the songs that I sing
When I lost myself it had a different meaning
Shut down and closed imagine all of those
Hundreds of dreams taking place around you
-

And that is why I'm so glad I have music to get me through this sh*t. I wouldn't be here without it.

Everything But the Girl – Blame Lyrics 14 years ago
I think this song might be about a man or woman who became a mother/father very young and chose chose to put their child up for adoption. And now he/she is experiencing some sadness, guilt or shame about it, wondering where the child is. And perhaps feeling like maybe they made a mistake in giving the child up. But they're saying that they're to blame for everything they're feeling now.

Also, there are a few lyrics missing at the end:

now you forgot the words, please don't forget your name.
and who gave that to you? well, that was me again.
who let you down and loved you? that was me again
and who's the one to blame? that was me again.
i'm the one to blame.

Nouvelle Vague – In a Manner of Speaking Lyrics 17 years ago
i think this song is about how overrated speaking and expressing how you feel about someone verbally can be. if you're fully in love with someone, that love swallows you. it's there 24/7/365 and you know that and it's comforting. therefore, you don't always have to go into this explicit verbal detail to express it. One of the reasons I think that is because of this line:

'I don't understand how love in silence becomes reprimand. But the way that I feel about you is beyond words'

what i think that means is that she doesn't understand how silence can so often be misinterpreted as a lack of feelings for the partner or anger towards the partner. sometimes when your bf or gf is silent, you think that he/she doesn't love you anymore or is perhaps angry at you when the reality is that they love you more than ever, but that love is 'beyond words' and that's why they're silent.

when she says 'give me the words that tell me nothing... give me the words that tell me everything', what she really means is give her silence because silence says nothing and everything all at the same time.

haha! i agree with you BusRoof. the music in the backround does sound like something out of a Disney movie. i think that's one of the things that's so great about it and gives it an odd sort of edge, in a good way of course.

Stereophonics – Hurry Up And Wait Lyrics 18 years ago
wait a minute. i take my explanation back. i was just listening to this song again and i realized that none of these things are really connected. he's running off a list of all the random things people wait for. how did i miss that? i think it's because when i listen to the cd, all those "waits" at the beginning of sentences are not in there. he took them out. but when i read them here, it makes more sense. oh well lol i suppose it could be interpreted a number of ways. awesome song any way you look at it :)

Ellie Lawson – Open Up The Door Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song is about a girl invovled in an abusive relationship. The narrator is trying to make her see that she needs to get out of the relationship but the girl is not hearing her. So the narrator is stuck and doesn't know what to do to make her see that she needs to stand up and be strong and walk away before it's too late.

Stereophonics – Hurry Up And Wait Lyrics 18 years ago
i love this song. it makes me teary eyed too. Kelly's voice on this track is amazing.

in this song, i just imagine people living life, day to day, sad and depressed, searching for happiness. i think this song is about all the things you do in life to keep yourself happy and live up to the standard of what society says happiness is, in particular relationships and marriages. i think he's saying that people rush into these marriages/relationships thinking it will be the fairytale and the answer to their lives, thinking it will finally make them happy, then spend most of their time, waiting. for what, who even knows in the end? who even knows why they did this or made this jump or this decision? maybe they thought it would make them happy and solve all their problems. so people "hurry up and wait". they rush into things, then sit around waiting for things like happiness to come to them. by the end of the song, i think he's saying to go slow because it takes time to figure out what exactly will make you happy. you have to work at it and that true happiness is worth waiting for.

there's a part left out of the lyrics up there towards that end tho that goes..

Wait to get there, and when we get there,
We wait around for anyone to tell us what we even got there for
