Just listening to this song as a whole... I get this odd interpretation of it.. even the first bit 'vial of hope, vial of pain, in the light they both look the same'.... it makes me think of some drugs, maybe not real drugs, but just anything that is your drug, anything that keeps you going (perhaps in this case, religion, your bible) and how drugs are the cause of and solution to all your problems... and when you really think about your drug, as much as it makes you feel good it also makes you feel kinda like crap. Being addicted to anything (food, xanax, percocets, dope, crack, the bible, being a peeping tom, touching little girls or boys...whatever it may be) is unhealthy....
and also the whole in the city you see only lies lyric is like... the bible to living in the city, living in the fastpaced world that is ... now.....
has a whole bible of its own.. and whole set of rules... a set of rules that mostly just reinforces how insignificant everyone is.
see this is what i like about arcade fire--- i can interpret their songs any freakin way I want and almost... take a different meaning from it every time i listen.... Rock and roll can save the world---I sound like a dick. |

okay i love what jamisonlikewhat said up there. Whatever he quoted, it was right on. So many people are like AHHH CLAP YOUR HANDS
But don't even get what is so great about it. The first time I heard the album I was immediately in love. And so many people say 'Oh he sounds like David Byrne.' which almost makes no sense. I guess the vocal mechanics are a little bit in the same vein, but they kind of sound nothing alike. Especially because apart from the vocals, the music is completely different.
Basically when the day ends, Clap Your Hands first album was the most interesting thing to come out in the last two years. In my opinion. It's so fresh to me, I still love listening to it, every song is completely original, I don't hear shreds of anybody else in their songs. They are Clap Your Hands and only Clap Your Hands. Hipsters be damned I still love these guys.
Also, this is one of my favorite songs, and it used to floor me in the summer of 2005 I played the shit out of this song. It will always remind me of great great times. I love the end ' the sex the drugs the rock and rock and roll HEY!'

gosh I think the album version of this song is terrible. A few years ago I heard Alec's demo and I just loved it. It's so simple and cute. The rockier version that they're going to put on their new album just.... destroys what I loved about the demo. It's not really a demo, per se, it's just Alec doing a song by himself, I guess. It's all casiotone and simple, I love it. The album version sounds so rushed. |

There's such a backlash going on against these guys right now.... but I think it's quite unfounded. People are saying they're derivative....too much like the Talking Heads, in fact, I saw them live recently and someone in the back yelled out "Pyscho Killer" in between songs! And I was pissed because.... I don't know. I don't think their music really sounds Talking Heads'-esque. The sound is fresh. Alec Ounsworth's voice is worlds away from David Byrne in my opinion. He might be a little all over the place the same way Byrne was.... but... still. This song is a great example of how different Clap Your Hands is from anything else out there right now. The melodious "ohhhs" and "ahhhs" and the danceable rhythms. I don't know. Can't get anough of these guys. If you like Clap Your Hands, you should check out Alec Ounsworth's (the lead singer's) solo stuff.... he has some stuff available for download at www.flashypython.com "Underwater" was like my favorite song of the summer, despite how low-budget it is/was. |
