i agree that she's trying to sober up, but i don't think she's actually angry with those who didn't try to help. when she sings, "I hide all the bottles in places/ They find and confront me with pain in their eyes," i feel like she has people who are trying to help, but she doesn't want or cannot accept the help. when she sings, "And the loving spirit that follows me/ Watching helplessly, will always forgive me," i feel somewhat like she's upset with her friends/family for enabling by forgiving, but i also think that she's partially taking advantage of the forgiveness.
she says that she'll try to change, but she knows (and so do they) that it's an empty promise. alcoholism is quite difficult to break, and no one is ever truly free from any addiction. also true with most addictions is the correlation that can be drawn between the addiction and some form of low self-esteem. when she's wanting to die alone, she's beating herself up for pushing people out of her life, knowing that she can't be in a healthy relationship with a person while she's still committed to the addiction. |

i agree with alice. i don't think this song is supposed to be between a two men. in my opinion, one should not assume that the gender of a performer is absolutely the gender of the song's character. it's obviously a dialogue; one can tell that much from the beginning: "oo, loverboy, whatcha doin' tonight, hey boy?....... that's because i'm a good old fashion loverboy." it could be a dialogue between the loverboy and his male lover, the loverboy and his female lover, even the loverboy and himself.
that said, i usually think of two men when i hear this song. i love this song! i think i may be a gay man trapped in a woman's body... :) |

and i don't think the self-esteem issues were from the drugs and alcohol, though they surely impeded his recovery (of good self-esteem). i think the self-esteem issues were there before and probably had something to do with the onset of drug and alcohol addiction. |

actually, from what i've heard, the OC tends to do pretty well with music choices. i watched the first couple of episodes, and there was one character that had a ben folds poster in his room. that same character apparently sticks up for other underappreciated artists (like elliott smith, though i don't know if he has ever said anything about elliott). i have no idea what's going on in the show because, as i said, i only watched the first couple of shows. anywho, i don't think it should be bad that any artist who is underappreciated suddenly gets a modicum of the recognition he/she deserves, even if the recognition comes from morons. |

this song is actually about the future marriage of me and ben. of course, he'll be 41 when i'm 22, but that's merely something to throw you all off the trail. the hiro/hero thing just means that hiro is ben's hero. he wants to be like hiro, and he will be in a few years when we get married. you'll all see.
oh, and wrapid, no he didn't. have you ever _listened_ to ben? since when does he use synthesizers? other than the little drum fill in this song (which serves a text painting purpose that carlo gesualdo would be envious of) and his work with majosha, he uses real instruments. he won't even use keyboards (unless it's fear of pop or some shatner junk, which doesn't count). |

this track is a nice look at the dilemma in which guys seem to find themselves: do i try for an actual relationship, or do i try to get laid? mike is so genuinely honest that it's hard not to root for him, regardless of his intentions.
that said, what's the deal with people like "psychotic_bitch" who feel the need to portray themselves as utter fuckwits online? just trying to read through that post and make sense of it took me longer than it took me to read and comprehend every other post combined. |
