Josh Ritter – Right Moves Lyrics 16 years ago
i think the song is about love, in general- the premise seems to be that he was with the girl before, she left him for someone else then came back, now he wants to make sure he's doing the right things to keep her. my favorite is the last two verses though, it seems like they are trying to come to terms with the unpredictability of love. he is worried that someday things will change between them and they will lose the love they have ('drift apart in the night, never know why and not know how'), but she responds that at that moment they are together and happy ('i don't know darling, but i'm here with you and we're coming to the chorus now') so why worry about it? love might not last forever like we want it to, but if something is good and makes you happy, just appreciate it and accept the future when it comes. that's the message i get out of it.

Subtle – Red, White, & Blonde Lyrics 17 years ago
crazy fucking lyrics, and an amazing song! i agree with hipster, and I think it's also about our tendency to take after our parents/everyone else in our culture and accept their way of viewing the world rather than thinking for ourselves (which i think is what he's referring to with all of the references to birth). rather than going through the effort of being born as one's own person, people just accept the way things are and go along with it.

The Decemberists – The Perfect Crime #2 Lyrics 17 years ago
heaven forbid a band should do a song that isn't what their fans expect from them! i think this song is awesome, and especially awesome because it isn't their usual style... but they still put their own little decemberists twist on it. and come on, the part after the line "as we mouth our silent goodbyes," how can anyone listen to that without feeling the urge to jump up and dance?

Andrew Bird – Masterfade Lyrics 18 years ago
I think the song is expressing how he feels that technology takes away from some of the simple beauty of life. He keeps referring to GPS technology, and this line:
"your happiness won't find you underneath that canopy of trees if the green grass is 6 the soybeans are 7
the junebugs are 8 the weeds and thistles are 11"
is referring to how things in life can't just be categorized into numbers. Then juxtaposed into this are images of the most idyllic, simple life he can imagine ("you took my hand and led me down to watch a papillon parade
we let the kittens lick our hair and drank our chalky lemonade"). Oh yeah, and papillon is french for butterfly, I'm pretty sure. Finally... I think by masterfade he's talking about how on sound mixing boards and things like that there's one little knob or level that controls the volume or whatever it is of the entire production... so he's saying that he's still in control of his life... if he wants to he can turn down the masterfade and leave it all behind. Really I get the feeling that he just writes songs about whatever he happens to be thinking of, and that he just has an amazingly beautiful way of wording it all. :)

Modest Mouse – Satin in a Coffin Lyrics 19 years ago
i get the feeling this song is about how people are so focused on dying that they neglect to really live... the 'are you dead or are you sleeping' line refers to people living as though they are asleep, and isaac thinking that it would be better to be dead than to live like that.

orrrr else it's not really about anything. EITHER WAY IT'S A GREAT SONG.

Neutral Milk Hotel – Two-Headed Boy Pt. 2 Lyrics 19 years ago
I think this song is about several different people, but the main theme that ties it together is loneliness. All of the people in the song want someone to love above anything else-- I think 'Daddy' had a son who either died or simply grew up and left him. I'm not sure about the next few verses, but to me the most poignant is the last one:
Two headed boy she is all you could need
She will feed you tomatoes and radio wires
And retire to sheets safe and clean
But don't hate her when she gets up to leave

I think the two-headed boy metaphor refers to someone who feels completely separate and outcast from the world--he's not actually deformed, but because he cannot relate to other people, that's how he sees himself, as a freak. Eventually he finds someone who is like him and who gives him exactly what he needs ('tomatoes and radio wires'), but after a short period of bliss, she leaves and he realizes that it wasn't real love at all. The very last line, 'but don't hate her when she gets up to leave' just sounds so heartbreaking, it makes me cry all the time when I listen to it.
