Lyric discussion by BluVelvetElvis

Hey stoners! Craig Nicholls likes drugs, but not every song Craig Nicholls wrote is about drugs.

This song is a first person fictional narrative of front line soldier at WAR. He is sitting under a tree, holding a weapon, surrounded by tin, waiting to make his next enemy hit. He is fighting out of conflicted religious duty, he is thinking about the woman he left behind, and he is considering his own mortality. Even if he survives the war, he will never get clean. The blood is on his hands.

Thanks to AnimalMachine1969 for correcting the lyrics, which are the most complete and correct version I have found online.

@BluVelvetElvis One more thought I wanted to add to my previous comment:

It's 1969 in Craig's head. The House demo version of The Vines song '1969' has the following lyrics:

It's 1969 in my head I just want to have no place to go When I get to Vietnam I'm gonna get stoned, look round at my soul.

Those lyrics were modified for the 'Highly Evolved' album release, but you can currently search for 'The Vines 1969 House Demo' on YouTube and hear it.
