The Vines – In The Jungle Lyrics 2 years ago
@[BluVelvetElvis:38080] One more thought I wanted to add to my previous comment:

It's 1969 in Craig's head. The House demo version of The Vines song '1969' has the following lyrics:

It's 1969 in my head
I just want to have no place to go
When I get to Vietnam
I'm gonna get stoned, look round at my soul.

Those lyrics were modified for the 'Highly Evolved' album release, but you can currently search for 'The Vines 1969 House Demo' on YouTube and hear it.

So, 'In the Jungle' is a continuation of Craig's interest in the Vietnam War by imagining himself in the role of a soldier. Sorry to ruin anyone's fantasy that this song is just about being high. It's about more than that.

Hey stoners! Craig Nicholls likes drugs, but not every song Craig Nicholls wrote is about drugs.

This song is a first person fictional narrative of front line soldier at WAR. He is sitting under a tree, holding a weapon, surrounded by tin, waiting to make his next enemy hit. He is fighting out of conflicted religious duty, he is thinking about the woman he left behind, and he is considering his own mortality. Even if he survives the war, he will never get clean. The blood is on his hands.

Thanks to AnimalMachine1969 for correcting the lyrics, which are the most complete and correct version I have found online.

Craig Nicholls is not getting high on "trends". He's getting high on TRIMS. As in, marijuana trims (the shake, the excess).

Also, I agree that line 2 is: "Lives are goddamned ruined like the RUNS". A vocal run is a series of notes sung by a singer, high and low on the scale in quick succession. Craig is famous for his falsetto (his ability to use a high singing voice). Perhaps here, he fears he has ruined his singing voice, along with a few lives.

For the final line, I'd also like to submit that he could be saying: "Anyway, I SOLD what I could find".

Overall, this song is about Craig's desire to be "taken back" to simpler days, before his dreams came true... and got ruined.
