Lyrics for Never Ending Math Equation as interpreted by OwnPersonalDemon

Never Ending Math Equation Lyrics
I'm the same as I was when I was six years old
And oh my God, I feel so damn old
I don't really feel anything
On a plane, I can see the tiny lights below
And oh my God, they look so alone
Do they really feel anything?
Oh my God, I've got to, got to, got to, got to move on
Where do you move when what you're moving from
Is yourself?
The universe works on a math equation
That never even ever really ends in the end
Infinity spirals out creation
We're on the tip of its tongue, and it is saying
We ain't sure where you stand
You ain't machines and you ain't land
And the plants and the animals, they are linked
And the plants and the animals eat each other
Oh my God, and oh my cat
I told my Dad what I need
Well, I know what I have and want
But I don't know what I need
Well, he said, he said, he said, he said
"Where we're going, I'm dead"

no, even better, download Imesh (RIP Audiogalaxy). It's great, and queueing things up isn't too complicated and stuff resumes automatically. I've found that for really obscure indie stuff it brings up far more results than KaZaA. Oh yeah and I have no idea what this song means either..., and that goes for most of their stuff even though I saw them in concert..ohwell. but did you hear something about Isaac Brock getting charged with rape?? What the hell?!

A woman accused Isaac of raping her in Spring of 1999. The charges were soon dropped, but not before creating an uproar in the Seattle music scene. There have been many conflicting rumors on the subject with people jumping to either defend Isaac or accuse him. In the end neither his guilt nor his innocence have been proven. I suspect that the only people who will ever know the truth are the two parties involved

This song seems like a confusion of religion and evolution. I don't know where Isaac stands on that issue, but it seems like he's confused on whether to believe in the evolutional theory or the theory of God. This song seems to illustrate the huge contradiction between the two. It's almost as though he's trying to figure it out. In the end it doesn't matter because you will die and the world will keep going.

Whatever the hell I just said....... who knows..?

The never ending math equation is the the "unified field theory", or the theory of everything. Einstein was among the first to try and figure it out, but never did. No one has, and we may never do it. What they're trying to do is to find one equation that unifies the four fundamental forces of nature: strong nuclear, weak nuclear, electromagnetic, and gravitational. These are the only four forces in the universe, everything else is based on them. So if you find an equation that links them all together, you have the equation that EVERYTHING works on..."The universe works on a math equation". However, some believe it doesn't exist..."never even ever really ends in the end"

Did you realize when he said "Oh my God and oh my cat" that God is DOg backwards? Oh my dog and oh my cat.

Now that's brilliance! Like this song. Which I have no idea what it means.

no this song is about how the earth stays under control and the food chains just keep moving like a never ending math equation. To me, I thought since Isaac is smart enough to make the lyrics and meaning to this song, that he would believe there is a god, but o well thats just me

I think this song is just special to the person who sung and wrote it...we dont always have to find a meaning for every single song we hear. No need in translating and posting our opinions on a website since there are so many interpretations and because you never really know what was going through Isaac's head when he was writing this song. (maybe he was reflecting on his religion and purpose in life? maybe he's talking about a personal experience that only he would understand? maybe he was tripping off on acid haha?) When we just associate the song with our personal experiences, and relate it SOMEHOW- no matter in what way to our lives, then thats when the song really achieves its purpose.

"To me, I thought since Isaac is smart enough to make the lyrics and meaning to this song, that he would believe there is a god". If he were smart enough he would not believe in god. Science does not support a god and anyone with any sense believes in science. regardless, we are all modest mouse fans here and I thnk that this song means that Issac feels like a speck in the huge universe, be it god looking down or not, and that evolution will soon take over him ,not only the other animals

This was the first song I ever heard by Modest Mouse, I love it! It's phenomenal! I can't even begin to ponder what goes through Isaac's brain when he writes songs. . . the man is a genius, I love Modest Mouse now.

I think you guys have missed alot of the song. Don't you have to look at the song as a whole to discover the real meaning? idk, but try this on maybe...

How were we all when we were 6 years old? I think we were very careless and thought we would never get hurt. So I think he has put himself in a box, and wont accept that there are things in the world that can hurt him. Old people are always saying, I did this and got hurt so dont do it. So he says, O my God! I've been through so much and I feel so old, knowing not to do this and that.

Try not to lose me here heh...

So he's looking at the world from a bird's eye veiw, and not from his perspective (which was that he cant get hurt). And he see's these people living there lives like they can't get hurt.

I have been looking at my freshman class and just be like, do they not relize that they are in a world where it doesnt matter about stupid stuff like what was on TV last night, or childish boyfriend/girlfriend stuff.

He is trying to move on to a higher state of mind, because he's sick and tired of living a life where he thinks he can't get hurt, and ends up getting hurt. So he's trying to escape himself/his old ways. Now comes the whole math equation. He is trying to , idk how to say it, "solve the problem of life"? Like he doesnt know how he should live life, what he should beleive in. The world is saying so many different things and they are all imposing there idea's on him, waiting for him to say, I beleive in this (WE ((religions or any certain way of thinking)) are on the tip of its tongue...). But it seems everyone is saying, WE dont know who we are, WE dont know what we need, they all offer different wants and impose on you what you have (wether its you have a destiny or not)...

But in the end, he ask's his Dad (which is someone who, a 6 year old looks up to) and his Dad imposes his beleives on his child and says basically, it doesn't matter, we're going we're gonna die...

So all in all, it could be the never ending problem of people imposing there beleives on you , and how it seems you have to believe and live by something, and thats the never ending problem... you never know what to beleive...

idk, I wasnt sure how to get my idea across, this is my first posting, let me know what u guys think, and wether or not I should shoot myself in the foot for trying heh. cya

I think this song's theme is similar to those in a lot of MM songs. The struggle between religion and science. The first verse seems to elude to a "higher" form of life. Correct? He says "Oh my God" several times. He's talking about seeing the lights below like God would.

But Issac Brock is an athiest. And so, science comes into the song. The Never Ending Math Equation, which states the theory that life can be put into something as simple (yet, very, very, very complex) as a math equation. No creationism. No big bang theory. (although that may have to do with the math equation. If someone could fill me in on that, it would be much appreciated) And where DO we stand? We're not really sure, are we? No one knows why we were "chosen" or "created" to be humans, smart and brilliant.

And the plants and the animals ARE linked. We share the same DNA. And then, we eat each other. I first thought that was about betraying someone you're linked too. How this world was built to make things that are linked go against each other. How the world wouldn't exist it we didn't eat each other.

Or it just represents the food chain.

The last part baffles me. Here's what I made out of it. I agree with the "oh my dog and oh my cat." As humans, we have what we have and we have what we want. But do we really KNOW what it is that we need? Not really.

The last line, is the one that makes me wonder about the whole battle between religion and science. "Where we're going, I'm dead." Whatever comes after this life, you're going to be dead. But what that is, who knows. A religous place? Or no place at all?

I think this is about that overwhelming feeling of meaninglessness in the face of life, the universe, and everything. When you feel old and not anything at all. Where do you move when you want to move from yourself, is an eloquent emotion. The feeling doesn't end and you don't know who you are. Typical questions of existentialism, all wrapped up in a funky indie rock song.
