Like many have said, the song refers to heroin use. The music videos offers clues to this.

It starts out with Dave and an old man are sitting behind a tea set. As soon as Dave takes a sip, you see a car turn on inside a garage and slowly amble into a vast, barren field. The other DM members are present but distant and watch as the car starts to drive. The next clip is of Dave and the old man running through the field, the car is speeding down the road, Dave is jumping and everything picks up momentum, and then you see a quickly panning shot of Dave serenely lying on his back... The grass in the field sways, and Dave is standing with his arms stretched out like he's invincible. Then the car door opens and it's stopped in the field, and the other DM guys are carrying Dave, who seems dazed and can't walk, out of the field. You see a DM member walk up to the car like he's trying to check on the person inside. The car shuts off and everything is bleak and dark, Dave is stumbling on the edge of the field as he sings, "Never let me down." He begins to sway in the grass and falls backward; then you see his friends carrying him again, and finally he stumbles and falls to the ground in the dark.

Pretty much a heroin high.

As far as lyrics go, I think the most obvious lines are "We're flying high / We're watching the world pass us by / Never want to come down / Never want to put my feet back down on the ground." Heroin makes time seem to stop; the world is passing him by as he's suspended in some warm, euphoric cocoon, detached from everything around him.

"The stars are bright tonight / Everything's alright tonight" because everything's fine when you're f***ed up.

I always thought this song is about drug addiction too like many others here, but in 1987 Dave wasn't in heroin am I rigt!?

Another submissive expression, (see "master and servant," ect.) but this time sung to a drug not a lover. "He knows where he's taking me" implies that the drug is in control, he's surrendered to it, drug abuse as total power exchange with a chemical, a chilling and potent metaphor.

I thought originally, when this song was released during my adolescence, that it was sung by a codependent lover. These days, the drug references are more glaringly obvious. There are very few songs that can be taken either way, not to mention still sounding this good.

In the book "Stripped" Martin said that there was a lot of extasy arund them in the Violator era and he was propably the worst during that time. So I think that whole "Martin was clean" thing is simply BS ;) Read the J. Miller's book- it says a lot about DM and drugs.

I think this song sounds like it could be a song that Gore wrote to Gahan.

When I think about it, I see david wrapped up and lost in drugs and gahan similar but in not such a bad state. I think Gore knew that Depeche Mode was going to be huge and was becoming bigger than their wildest dreams and that Gahan would ruin it all with his drug usage. In my mind, he posed this to Gahan and Gahan like all drug addicts probably stated that it'd never happen again, because he knows how important his band is to him.

So when he says:

I'm taking a ride with my best friend -
I get:
I'm taking a ride to the top with my best friend and my bandmate,


I hope he never lets me down again:
I hope he doesn't fuck it all up by doing something stupid like o.ding or, quitting the group, being a stupid idiot and ruining our dreams,

He knows where he's taking me:
He knows how big we're getting and that we're about to explode as a band

Taking me where I wanna be:
Taking the band to the top (lead singer, awesome voice)


We're flying high
We're watching the world pass us by:
We're doing things that are beyond our wildest dreams

Never want to come down
Never want to put my feet back down
On the ground:
Don't wanna be stopped because we're too fucked to kick our habits

Promises me I'm as safe as houses:
Promises he won't do it again.

As long as I remember who's wearing the trousers:
Trust him because he's in charge, he's the lead singer and knows how important work, the band, etc. are.

I hope he never lets me down again:
doesn't really trust Gahan but will go along with it anyway because they're best friends.


But that's just my cracked out ears hearing what they wanna hear. lol :P

It seems like the main character in song is struggling for the control. Who has the control? Is the main character in the song or his "best friend?" I think the "best friend" is a drug.
