I also wanted to mention, I'm not trying to criticize or offend anyone, but I think people sometimes read way too much into the lyrics of Tool and APC. Yes, Maynard is a very intelligent person and his lyrics may have deep meanings, but I think a lot of the time, the meanings of the songs are simply the most obvious ones and they’re just what they are, with no hidden deep meaning. As Freud said, “sometimes a cigar is just a cigar”. But again…that’s just my opinion. |

I agree with the recovery meaning. I’m a recovering alcoholic/addict myself and unless there’s some hidden meaning, it’s pretty clear (to me anyway) it’s about a person who just "got sober". I’ve seen many people come out of treatment after getting off of heroin, etc ("casting their demons out") and want to immediately run around and tell everyone how they’re cured and everything’s great (“Now you stand reborn before us all, So glad to see you well”). This person apparently did something to kill someone while using drugs or alcohol. Part of a 12 step program AA/NA is to make amends to those we have harmed through our drug use. It seems like Maynard is annoyed with this person because he’s running around telling everyone he’s well and cured, and Maynard is sarcastically saying he doesn’t want to pull him down off of his treatment high ("your cloud") and pull the halo off this now perfect new person, but that he better not be too proud of himself because he can’t make amends to the person/s he killed. It also seems like Maynard is annoyed because it also sounds like the person hasn’t fully accepted the blame for what he’s done and is kind of going through the motions ("Recall the deeds as if they're all someone else's atrocious stories "). I’ve seen people tell their stories in AA and they tell it with absolutely no emotion or conscience which basically says they’re not sorry for what they’ve done yet, and haven’t accepted it. They use rehab and their addiction as an excuse for their previous behavior and don’t accept blame for it. I also had a question about the lyrics typed up here. The second and third lines “Without himself , you cast your demons out “, I heard as “with Adam’s help, you cast your demons out”. My guess was that he’s referring to Adam Jones and that he helped whoever this person is get into rehab. I could be reaching here, but that was my guess. Anyone know if this is the case? Did Adam help Layne get into treatment at some point? The recovering person meaning would also kind of go with other parts of the cd (Weak and Powerless, which sounds to me like its about heroin addiction) and the title “Thirteenth Step” which is a phrase used in AA/NA. There’s tons of other references scattered throughout the songs. Anyway, thats my thoughts on it. |

| I agree about the drugs, although the members of DM weren't heavily into drugs at this point, in fact, David was really the only one to get into drugs and that was in the mid 90s. Anyway, this song sounds like its about drugs, specifically, LSD. It sounds like theyre taking an acid trip and one of the two has done it before and is guiding the other through the trip. Anyone whos familiar with LSD knows that this is usually the best way to trip for the first time. Many people can freak out and as long as you have a calm person tripping with you, it can keep you grounded (promises me Im as safe as houses, etc). | |
