Lyrics for Never Let Me Down Again as interpreted by gasmask

Never Let Me Down Again Lyrics
I'm taking a ride
With my best friend
I hope he never lets me down again
He knows where he's taking me
Taking me where I want to be
I'm taking a ride
With my best friend

We're flying high
We're watching the world pass us by
Never want to come down
Never want to put my feet back down
On the ground

I'm taking a ride
With my best friend
I hope he never lets me down again
Promises me I'm as safe as houses
As long as I remember who's wearing the trousers
I hope he never lets me down again

Never let me down

See the stars they're shining bright
Everything's alright tonight

this is just a shot in the dark, but this song was written in the 80s when DM were heavy into the whole drug scene. i think that "he" may be the drug itself, and Gahan is saying how euphoric it is to be having this experience

That would make PERFECT sense, and I totally admire you for bringing up that point, but Martin Gore was the main songwriter, especially with the lyrics, and he wasn't into the drugs. But had Dave Gahan written it, and he could've, I haven't checked, then yeah, totally.

I think the song is about a gay male and his best friend, also a gay male. They had a brief fling at one point in their history, but broke up due to whatever reasons and decided to just be friends again. That is, until the one day when they get back together. The singer then expresses both his euphoria and understandable apprehension at this development.

However, the drug interpretation mentioned earlier also sounds plausible. I guess we'll have to ask DM personally.

I think it's a song about a very close male friend that he was in love with and maybe went somewhere that scared him....

Promises me I'm as safe as houses
As long as I remember who's wearing the trousers
I hope he never lets me down again

I don't think this song is about "male friends" at all. The drug idea works so perfectly.

I agree about the drugs, although the members of DM weren't heavily into drugs at this point, in fact, David was really the only one to get into drugs and that was in the mid 90s. Anyway, this song sounds like its about drugs, specifically, LSD. It sounds like theyre taking an acid trip and one of the two has done it before and is guiding the other through the trip. Anyone whos familiar with LSD knows that this is usually the best way to trip for the first time. Many people can freak out and as long as you have a calm person tripping with you, it can keep you grounded (promises me Im as safe as houses, etc).

yes the drug idea fits perfectly into this song...and martin would also write songs for dave, so it could've been martin wrote this song knowing dave would be singing it...

They were all doing drugs when this song came out. Dave was just the one who did it openly. The song, to me, is about a bond between to people. Not a love relationship , but maybe a controling one. One that has maybe failed in the past . Just because Martin uses words like high and such doent mean they relate to drugs.

Could be a song about escaping a shitty small town life DM did.

I've been wondering about this song for ages. The drug interpretation finally makes sense! Even if Martin was clean and sober, I'm sure he had plenty of examples around him to draw from.

Ok I always thought the drug refrence also but the more I look at it the more I see mabey he is talking about himself taking a chance on something that he is not so optimistic about the outcome. But he trusts himself enough to try it. The flying high part may be never wanting to face the reality of the consequence if it doesnt work out. I really wish Mart would reveal the meaning of this song lol.. it always seems to start such a debate.

I've also been wondering about this song for ages... When I was 15 (now I'm 30), I thought it was simply about deceived love (or friendship) affair between 2 people taking a new start (never let me down AGAIN...). Then someone told be that it could be about drugs, which made a lot of sense also... but, if it's about taking a LSD trip, why never let me down "AGAIN"? The fear of getting back to the real world?... may be...
I could also be about some political leader... or even some religious considerations.. but I dont think so.

xod wrote above that Martin was clean and sober... I dont't really think so... I remember an article I've read where Martin told about his taste for beers... and books about Nazism... but there are NO reason to start a debate about that, knowing that both of them are at left.

Anyway, the "As far as I remember who's wearing the trousers" is clearly about control... And I'm convinced that the "who" is in fact Martin, not another person, wether it's about love or drug.

Finally, this song is quite simple in words, structure and melodies, but the meaning of it, especially when you think about the song and the sound as a whole, remains a mystery... And one of my very very all time favourite.

Martin, if you read us... ;-)

all of the above written comments are true but Depeche Mode obviously looked passed the drug insanity when they ended the song ( after a cruel knock at life that put them through lots of chalenges at the end of the day) the stars shine bright and everything's alright

Not to sound rude - but - there is nothing to debate here. This song is clearly about drugs. When the song first came out, when I was all of 14, I knew that. Come on people. About homosexuality? No.

The ending - " see the stars they're shining bright/ Everything's alright tonight" is about him being high and "everything is alright".

I definitely remember reading an interview with Martin, though I can't remember where (may be one of the old official fan club BONG fanzines, they used to have Q&A sessions with the band members, but I can't be sure). Martin replied to a direct question about NLMDA saying that the song is about his relationship with Fletch. I don't know if mine was the first source of this information, but it pretty much seems the official position, and I've heard it quoted elsewhere.

This said, I believe the song is about drugs. I concur that the words "we're flying high" may be "a little bit too much to the point", but it makes a lot of sense anyway. Should that be the case, Mart could never have declared that publicly, at least not at the time. Maybe we'll hear differently one day. Maybe the song is really about Fletch.

It sure is a wonderful, touching song.

Hidispenser, does it really have to be gay? I mean, this could be written from the perspective of a girl, I don't see why it couldn't.

It's a constant power struggle,
Love IS the drug !!! what are you guys talking about... you people can interpret it as being about heroine, it can really be interpretated anyway. I must include that some interpretations make more sense than others though. I mean.. duh.. heroine is a girl,
so it can't be about that. Mans best friend is a dog, but dogs don't wear trousers...so i'm confused.
not.
Jesus.
He's talking about fletch.
he's was in love/lust with his friend Gawwwwd.
