Someone told me long ago
There's a calm before the storm,
I know; it's been comin' for some time.
When it's over, so they say,
It'll rain a sunny day,
I know; shinin' down like water.

[Chorus:]
I want to know, have you ever seen the rain?
I want to know, have you ever seen the rain
Comin' down on a sunny day?

Yesterday, and days before,
Sun is cold and rain is hard,
I know; been that way for all my time.
'Til forever, on it goes
Through the circle, fast and slow,
I know; it can't stop, I wonder.

[Chorus:]

Yeah!

[Chorus:]

General Comment:Agree with Oufielder. This song is, for me, about ups and downs in life.

General Comment:I always love how everyone trys to label this song...it about Vietnam...its about this or that. It's about whatever you want it to be I guess. That's what makes it a great song in that the meanings are whatever touches you. I remember hearing this song when it first came out so the meanings have changed over the years as I changed. It's about the bands demise but it's also about asking if things ever get better.

General Comment:I love this song...always have. But then again I love almost all songs about rain. Rain is so calming and beautiful....bringing life to the world. Grew up with CCR....good stuff! (The person below explained the song beautifully, so why be redundant:)

Song Meaning:Basically it means you go through some tough times, but you get back on your feet and everything is all good, you're happy, the outlook is great, it's a beautiful day, then something bad happens again, you just deal with it. He's asking have you ever seen the rain? yeah, it's depressing but it goes away. Don't think it doesn't.

Perfect for where we at now.

General Comment:"I know; been that way for all my time" suggests that this song is about feeling down...not about chemical warfare. It's a simple tune about feeling blue...even when the sun is shining. Some of you need to contact Ollie in Hollyweird to discuss conspiracy theories:)

    General Comment:
Creedence was talking about Vietnam War. The "rain" is that Yellow Poisoned Powder that falls from the sky... Compare to "Who'll Stop the Rain" means the same... "Five years of new deals" was Nixon preparimg the Vietnam invasion...

Song Meaning:Back when this song was released there were a number of songs about a coming revolution and promoting the idea. A song had been out just before this about a storm coming. I think he's asking them to stop and look at what such things are like. "Have you ever seen the rain?" It's not pretty.

My Interpretation:For those of you who haven't experienced what I'm about to say... Picture this: It's a "sunny day" in 1968, and you are walking on patrol in the dense jungles of Southeast Asia... it's very quiet (the "calm before the storm"), and there is "rain" coming down on this sunny day... but wait! ... It is not rain at all... It is Dioxin, and the droplets are "shinin' down like water"! DIOXIN was a chemical agent, a defoliant sprayed from the air in Vietnam to eliminate the heavy vegetation used to hide enemy positions. Dioxin was shipped to Vietnam in 55 gallon black barrels with a painted ring around the barrel. The ring was orange... Hence the code name "Agent Orange". Anyway, unlike the "fortunate sons" who never had to experience that "bad moon risin'", I often wondered, as the drops of dioxin gathered on my skin... "who'll stop the rain". Finally, to the children who lost Fathers in the Vietnam war... Remember when Daddy was leaving to go to war?... and he "took you by the hand" and said "someday you'll understand"... well, as we all know... "someday never comes". John Fogerty was very emotionally connected to us Vietnam Warriors, as were so many other bands of that era. My absolute favorite was a tearjerker titled "Home" by Gary Puckett and the Union Gap. A true masterpiece. God bless our troops!
