Dirty on the ground is what I need
I got another one to tell you
And another one to make you believe
Pity in the grass tried to be
The one you needed when I told you
That you wanted something bigger than me

I've got friends in all the right places
I know what they want
And I know they don't want me to stay
I said that I've got friends in all the right places
I know what they want
And I know they don't want me to stay

'Cause you are not alive
When I need you
I need it quickly
In case you never know

I can't play where I'm not supposed to anyway

Dirty on the ground is what I see
I need another reason why
I need another reason, tell me to breathe
The dirtier the sound, the best I breathe
I tried to do it all for you
It didn't do anything for me

'Cause I've got friends in all the right places
I know what they want
And I know they don't want me to stay
I've got friends in all the right places
I know what they want
And I know they don't want me to stay

And you and I will find
That when I need you
I need it quickly
In fact, you'll never know

I've got friends in all the right places
I know what they want
And I know they don't want me to stay
I said that I've got friends in all the right places
I know what they want
And I know they don't want me to stay

He said I've got friends in all the right places
I know what they want
And I know they don't want me to stay
I've got friends in all the right places
I know what they want
And I know they don't want me to stay

I reckon it's about a guy who's about to propose to his girlfriend, but who then gets eaten by a bear, and when his girlfriend visits him at the cemetery, she summons his ghost, but the bear comes back and chases both of them and also sings a little bit, and then the ghost-guy finally gets to beat the bear, revealing that it's just a guy wearing a bear-suit. Actually, it makes more sense if it's written from the bear's point-of-view (especially if he just wants to be friends with the couple...)

Um...I never write on here, but I can almost say for a fact this is NOT about drugs. As a fellow PK (preacher's kid) just like Andy Hull, this song takes on a new dimension for me, and I could write almost lyric for lyric if I had the time to explain what he's talking about, but it would be a very long post! Basically this is about trying to desperately to live up to his father's (and God's) expectations, but falling short, and not knowing how to deal with it (ex. dirty on the ground is what I see, I need another reason why I need another reason, tell me to breathe). He still agrees that they'll always have a relationship , but his father will never know when he truly will need spiritual help (ex. cause you and I will ride, but when I need you, I need it quickly...in case (in fact you'll never) know...etc. etc.) The chorus of "I've Got Friends" is simply about the sickening transparency of most of the church family that PK's are pushed into seeing for what it really is, and are usually afraid to go to when they truly seek spiritual guidance. They may all be your "friends", but as I know all too well, most of them are fake and really "don't want me to stay. And, in case "I can't play where I"m not supposed to anyway" in a childish tune confuses any of you with the theme that I'm presenting, I personally LOVE this lyric. As a PK, you watch everyone else that's allowed to do the things that you can't because you live in this glorified fish bowl where everyone is watching your every move as a child...something that can really affect someone as they get older, whether it is intended or not. If anyone is interested, just let me know and I'll take the time to break this down lyric by lyric...right now it's one of my favorite songs. Thanks for reading! ;)

i feel the song is about a relationship yes, but not necessarily a bad one. i feel it might just be dysfunctional, and he might not feel he wants to leave all though all signs point to moving on.

"Dirt in the ground is what i need." Dirt, unclean, but natural and vital. expressing something he needs, but playing off the fact that it is not what may be right.

"I've got another one to tell you, and another one to make you believe" i get the idea, that his friends are trying to show him this isn't a good place for him.

"pity in the grass tried to be the one you needed when I told you that you wanted something bigger than me" - things are breaking, and he tells her im the one you needed, but you said you wanted something more.

the chorus "iv'e got friends in all the right places..." depicts his friends are coming from the right perspective and he knows that, but he says "i know what they want, and i know they don't want me to stay" and this is showing how there expressing to him that they don't want him with her.

a lot of the rest is self explanatory if you under stand the concept. But i feel there may be another side to the story. I write a lot too, and i sometimes take a concept like a relationship and use it to explain a story that may have nothing to do with girls and love. and i feel on some level this may be about other things. Disapproving of his lifestyle his band, himself.

    idk comments?

    Song Meaning

I've got friends is a sarcastic lament

"Dirty on the ground is what I need"

A way of saying he needs somebody to play with

"I got another one to tell you and another one to make you believe"

He want's people to like him, believe is okay, believe he is cool, believe he is worth hanging with.

"pity on the grass; I tried to be the one you needed when I told you that you wanted something bigger than me"

He wants somebody he can talk to, he's afraid the person he is talking to wont be his friend, so he talks in a disgustingly self effacing way. He tells people they can do better than him secretly hoping they will need him instead of leaving.

"I've got friends in all the right places I know what they want and I know they don't want me to stay"

But they don't need him or want him around. They aren't his friends even though he calls them that.

"cause you are not alive when I need you and I need it quickly in case you never know"

He is there for them but they are not there for him

"I can't play where I'm not supposed to anyway any way, anyways, any way, anyways..."

His parents don't approve of his "friends".

"dirty on the ground is what I see"

He sees other people playing with each other and having fun.

"I need another reason why I need another reason tell me to breathe"

He needs a reason why nobody wants him around, he needs a reason from the people that don't want him around. He is anxious and upset and all they do is tell him to "breath" (calm down in other words). They protagonist of the song is a bothersome hanger on to his "friends."

"the dirtier the sound, the best I breathe"

not sure yet, the dirtier the sound of the truth, the more raw the truth about why nobody want to be around him. Hard not to put sexual connotations on "dirtier the sound" but I don't think that is the intent of the lyric. The lyric is about rumor spreading maybe. Listening to people tell rumors about each other makes him feel involved even though he isn't really a part of the crowd.

"I tried to do it all for you it didn't do anything for me"

He is "being there" for his friends at his own expense. He is nice to his "friends" in all the wrong ways. He is a "nice" guy, sort of fun to be around sometimes, but is mostly a bother and not well liked or respected.

"I've got friends in all the right places I know what they want and I know they don't want me to stay

and you and I will find that when I need you I need it quickly in fact you'll never know

I've got friends in all the right places I know what they want and I know they don't want me to stay "

The remaining lyrics just drive the point home. The song is about a guy who is a hanger on in a crowd of people that do not really like him. He desperately wants to be in the know but he winds up the butt of everyone's jokes. Nobody lets him in, he does not belong, he knows he should do something different, but he doesn't. Instead he takes vicarious pleasure in listening to the people in the crowd tell stories behind each others backs because that is the only time he feels involved.

    Yeah, he's got friends.

Great song. I think it's about a man who is in a relationship only for the s*x. (all the talk of dirt and being dirty) The woman had expressed that she was loosing interest. (you told me you wanted something bigger than me.) The man realizes that he doesnt need this in his life. He has friends who want the best for him and dont want him to stay in this s**-driven relationship.

    first song meaning attempt here.

He feels like he's put too much time into one person, and everytime he talks about the dirt or the grass, he's using it as a metaphor as a grave for himself or the relationship.

The chorus where he says he's got friends in the right places, could be the singer saying that his friends have his best interest at heart, and they dont want him to keep wasting time on the person he's singing about.

and the parts about when i need you i need it quickly, you'll never know. That could be his way of saying "no matter how much i miss and need you, you wont know"

thats all i got, anyone else?

I think it's about drugs I've got friends in all the right places (dealers) I know what they want (money/drugs) and I know they don't want me to stay (not real friends, they only want drugs)

dirt in the ground is what I see (death, buried)

'cause you are not alive (drugs again) when I need you (dealers/love) I need it quickly (drugs) in case you never know (love)

it's about addiction i think lovers who are both addicted not only to drugs but to each other it's almost like they're addicted to destruction

I kinda see it as him trying to live up to the high expectations he has and how he has friends in good places, but they may not really have his best intentions at heart, and just want to use him for his talent or whatever else.

"I know what they want, and I know they don't want me to stay" kinda sounds like they just want to use him and not help him or spend time with him.

Whatever it means, this song seriously rocks hard. I think its safe to say this song could become very popular very quickly.

Standing On The Edge Of Summer
Thursday
In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

The Night We Met
Lord Huron
This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines: "Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet" So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other: "I had all and then most of you" Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart "Some and now none of you" Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship. This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"

No Surprises
Radiohead
Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Blue
Ed Sheeran
“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.
