i feel the song is about a relationship yes, but not necessarily a bad one. i feel it might just be dysfunctional, and he might not feel he wants to leave all though all signs point to moving on.

"Dirt in the ground is what i need." Dirt, unclean, but natural and vital. expressing something he needs, but playing off the fact that it is not what may be right.

"I've got another one to tell you, and another one to make you believe" i get the idea, that his friends are trying to show him this isn't a good place for him.

"pity in the grass tried to be the one you needed when I told you that you wanted something bigger than me" - things are breaking, and he tells her im the one you needed, but you said you wanted something more.

the chorus "iv'e got friends in all the right places..." depicts his friends are coming from the right perspective and he knows that, but he says "i know what they want, and i know they don't want me to stay" and this is showing how there expressing to him that they don't want him with her.

a lot of the rest is self explanatory if you under stand the concept. But i feel there may be another side to the story. I write a lot too, and i sometimes take a concept like a relationship and use it to explain a story that may have nothing to do with girls and love. and i feel on some level this may be about other things. Disapproving of his lifestyle his band, himself.
