The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.
I figured he was just using autotune to give his voice an electronic sound, which sounds more like the Daleks.
The song is about the Daleks, to the Doctor. The first verse is where they first met the doctor (Skaro, the planet which the Daleks come from), and that they were fighting them, and they are still fighting now.
I think the end bit of the chorus about leaving it burning is about the doctor not being able to kill things easily, like in the series with Christopher Eccleston and the episode 161 "Dalek", he wasn't able to kill it. The 'ship' they refer to is the TARDIS.
The next verse is the Daleks saying that Daleks and Timelords are basically the same - they are really the most dangerous life forms in the universe. They are both very knowing and very hard to defeat.
'But what I do with that flame is what separates our types' would refer to how Daleks can kill quite easily, whereas the Doctor finds this difficult, and prefers not to kill things if it's possible not to do so. This is what makes the Timelords better than the Daleks in ways, but definitly different from them.
The end part is probably that if the Doctor and Daleks were to join forces, they'd be basically invincible and could stop the fighting between them.

Everything I've read says this song is about the Doctor and the Daleks, but unless Charlie has specifically said that that's the case, I'd respectfully disagree. To me, it seems obvious that its about the Doctor and Master, not the Daleks.
Here's my reasoning:
1) The eighth Doctor brought the Master to Skaro. We see him returning from this trip in the movie (featuring the only appearance of the ninth Doctor on screen). Before the series was restarted, this was the last time the Master had seen the Doctor.
2) "I am locked in war with you" is a very odd phrase. Usually people are "at war," not "in war". However, people /are/ "in love". The Doctor and the Master's relationship has always been one of both love and hate. The Daleks only ever hate the Doctor, never love him.
3) "Exterminate, regenerate"... In this phrase the use of "exterminate" definitely suggests Daleks, and I think that's where a lot of the confusion come from. However, I believe this is a reference to the fact that both the Doctor and Master have killed ("exterminated") each other several times, but they both always come back.
4) The idea that it is the Master singing to the Doctor is backed up by the statement that "we are both the same," i.e. they are both Timelords. The Daleks and the Doctor have almost nothing in common.
5) "As men we have our contrasts" - how can this be from the point of view of a Dalek if "we" are "men"? The Daleks are not men and never have been.
6) "Our constant companion is death" - I believe this is an ironic reference to the fact that Timelords have companions, and at least for the Master and the Doctor, those companions frequently end up dead.
7) "If it takes till the end of reality to beat you..." - the Daleks are not obsessed with defeating the Doctor. To them, he is the enemy, and they want him gone but its not an obsession. The only one obsessed with defeating the Doctor (and the one who literally went to the end of reality) is the Master.
8) The suggestion that the Doctor and the singer might travel time together is not one the Daleks would /ever/ make. It is however something that the Doctor suggested to the Master before he died as Saxon.

Met doesn't nescasarily mean the first time, I personally think it could be about Either Davros/Doctor or Master/Doctor, both of these have merit to them.
i can see your understanding but the doctor and master met on gallifrey for number one because they were friends a first and the master said that they would run accross his fathers estates.
blatantlybooshified thats not quite how i saw it to me its about the last episode where the doctor meets davros again davros says the doctor fashions people into weapons and says they are basically the same then the (second) doctor at the end basically blows up all the daleks and leaves davros to burn but the (real) doctor offers to take him in the tardis and help him so yeah it makes more sense to be specifically about that part of that episode but maybe in a more vague sense about the daleks and timelords in general
I tend to agree. The first half of the song is Davros to the Doctor talking about the eternal war they've literally fought for millenniums. The second half half then, starting with "We both carry the fire, that has the power to end life..." is the Doctor's response, the same offering of peace he extends to all his foes at some point. The last chorus is also reminiscent of the offering the Doctor made to the Master at the end of The Last of the Time Lords, to battle across the cosmos for all time. All in all it's an excellent song, one of my favorites by Chameleon Circuit.
okay i know this isn't what it is i am not an idiot i realize it's about the daleks and davros....but i noticed something about this song that made me think of something else...eliminate the word skaro...now can anyone else get the feel that he is talking to the master...that last line just screamed master/doctor moment at the end of season 3....please somebody tell me i'm not crazy for seeing this connection

I think this is about the Doctor and Davros
I think the line "I think you'll agree if one of us dies the other will too" goes more towards the Master/Doctor like thing than the Davros/Doctor because The Master and The Doctor are both timelords, the last of the timelords, and it would mean the end of a species, I.E "The other will too"
