Two ravens in the old oak tree, one for you and one for me
Bluebells in the late December, I see signs now all the time
The last time we slept together, there was something that was not there
You never wanted to alarm me but I'm the one that's drowning now
I could sleep forever these days because in my dreams I see you again
But this time fleshed out fuller face in your confirmation dress
It was so like you to visit me to let me know you were OK
It was so like you to visit me, always worrying about someone else
At your funeral I was so upset, so upset,
In your life you were larger than this
Statuesque
I see signs now all the time that your not dead your sleeping
I believe in anything that brings you back home to me
Bluebells in the late December, I see signs now all the time
The last time we slept together, there was something that was not there
You never wanted to alarm me but I'm the one that's drowning now
I could sleep forever these days because in my dreams I see you again
But this time fleshed out fuller face in your confirmation dress
It was so like you to visit me to let me know you were OK
It was so like you to visit me, always worrying about someone else
At your funeral I was so upset, so upset,
In your life you were larger than this
Statuesque
I see signs now all the time that your not dead your sleeping
I believe in anything that brings you back home to me

'The last time we slept together, there was something that was not there
You never wanted to alarm me but I'm the one that's drowning now'
The person was 'not there', he didn't want to 'alarm' him with his pain. He was drowning and now Kele is drowning.
People who are depressed often lose weight, hence the reference to seeing him ' fleshed out' probably the way he used to be before he got in this mental state.
It's a beautiful song and eventhough I've never lost anyone to suicide I can still find some form of grief in it. It doesn't matter how someone died.
It's absolutely beautiful.
The last time they slept together, there was something missing about her. Perhaps how she was trying to hide it so much that it came out as her not being herself. He says she didn't want to alarm him, like I said she didn't want him to know that she's dying. But since it all came a shock to him, it's devastating him which is why he says "I am the one drowning now"
The part with 'it's so like you..', got two different interpretations in my mind:
1. He is still talking about the last time she visited him (in real life) and wanted to let him know she's okay (maybe because she was away for awhile..cancer treatment?). He says it was so like you referring to the fact that she has always been the kind of person that worries about others but not herself, in this case worried about him.
2. He is talking about her visiting him in his dream. Telling him that 'she was okay' to not worry him after her death. So he says 'It was so like you to let me know you were okay' As in, she is still the same person after her death.
The one about the confirmation dress:
I believe he's referring to the fact that in her funeral, her face was very pale and skinny(cant find the correct word) for the disease. But in his dreams, he is seeing a fuller face in the dress, in other words, in his dreams she's still alive.
He is willing to live with those dreams and signs like the bluebells, if it keeps her alive in his mind. He is totally in denial of her death because it came so sudden.
This is my interpretation. I know I may have a big imagination and some of those things are not true..but let me know if something totally doesn't make sense. I really want to understand this song.
About ten days or so
After we saw you dead
You came back in a dream.
I'm alright now you said.
And it was you, although
You were fleshed out again:
You hugged us all round then,
And gave your welcoming beam.
How like you to be so kind,
Seeking to reassure.
And, yes, how like my mind
To make itself secure.
just my take lol sucker 4 emotions lol x
when i searched the meaning of bluebells it said that those flowers could mean everlasting love.
the second verse it think he means that 'the last time they slept together' there was something different like maybe he could sense something troubling her (which i assume is some kind of disease she has, which she never told him about). the thing about drowning maybe he meant he was already very worried /curious/afraid cause he could sense that she was hiding something.
hmmm for the 3rd and 4th verse i think it could mean that days before the girl died he kept on dreaming about her.maybe in his dreams she looked more peaceful and maybe healthier except in his dreams he was saying goodbye to him.
and he was very upset during the funeral because he never really knew that she was sick. im guessing that he didnt want to believe she was dead already. he was being in denial.
and now he is trying to look for signs even in the most simple things just to prove that she is still actually alive.
haha i really dont know thats just my own interpretation of the song
My interpretation of this song is that it's about a man hung up on a recently crumbled relationship.
When Kele sings 'At your funeral, I was so upset... in your life, you were larger than this, statuesque", I'm reminded of the break-up, and he wonders how she could be so uncaring and cold when breaking up with him, as if nothing previous mattered.
The "So like you to visit me, to let me know you were okay" section suggests to me that the girl came back for one night of passion out of her guilt for the emotional pain she's inflicted on him.
When he's saying "I see signs now all the time that you're not dead, you're sleeping", he's referring to the little things that he sees his ex do that suggest that the relationship can, in fact, be salvaged: that the relationship is not dead, it's sleeping.
For any fellow Bloc Party fans, I think the song is quite similar to Biko in the sense that it deals with the end of a relationship metaphorically with death.
