The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

The end of this song makes me want to break things. HOW DOES THIS BAND KEEP DOING THIS?!!?! It goes from a beautiful radiohead sound in the begining to a all out thrice-makes-want-to-hurt-things sound. And then awsome lyrics to go with it. Amazing. Definitely one of my favorite Thrice songs ever.

Honestly I dont think this song has any religious undertones or anthing like that.
I think its exactly how it sounds...
One day your problems or current problem will fade away with the help of friends and family, all your problems can be milestones and learning experiences but you have to be willing to open the wounds to share. and with that being said you can heal and help heal others who might share those problems or others. Those trails will remain tho, if you cant or arent willing to talk about them.

Every problem you have you may share the same problem or trial with someone else. Or when someone can stand in your shoes and help with your problems by sharing there own there no greater love, and you must except it to move foward in life.

I think this song is about the band. It's about the hardships they've been through as a band and how they've overcome them to be more than a band, but best friends through the process. The title "For Miles", I think, relates to the journey that the band has been through and how they've travelled so far and got so far.
I agree with Tossed Dwarf. The image of shedding your blood is so biblical. Christ did it and then it is used so many other times in the bible it is ridiculous. Dustin has definitely stepped the lyrics up a notch for the song-writing on this album.
I think this has a vague biblical reference, although i'm not sure. they may be using the bible from a literary standpoint rather than a religious one.
anyway, it's talking about the end of mortal life, when all the suffering a certain group of people have endured will end and everything will be made right, which could have a slight reference to the rapture.
however, there's also a lot that could deal with friendship and stuff, so it's tough to say. thrice is mysterious.

I agree with Tossed Dwarf, its a good reference to start from. However I think the song also delves into the imperfections of life on earth, suggesting that "one day all of our scars will disappear, all of our pain will fade away" later on we see "on that day all the scales will swing to set all the wrongs to right, until that day, all of our scars will still remain". This could be alluding to the second coming of Christ as well, but that is totally hypothesis. I'm pretty sure that the song is a message, like all of Thrice's songs, to a far greater audience that just Christians reminding us of the importance of loving through building "bridges to another's heart". Go Thrice.
They wrote this song as a tribute to Miles Davis. Was originally "Fur Miles" from reference to "Fur Elise" by Beethoven. However they changed it to "For Miles" for the double meaning of the tribute and like a long journey through life.
