In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.

wow.....not my favourite song off the albulm, but none the less its ok to listen to, hank 317 ure fucking mental, panic attack is one of the 3 best songs off that cd, i just went to the GiganTour in toronto and they kicked ass when they played it
Yeah U2 was the first thing that came to mind when I heard this. This has to be the simplest Dream theater song I've ever heard, but I feel like it's a nice sidestep on the album. The lyrics helped me save someone's life. My ex-girlfriend's Grand mother was shot and killed. She was on the brink of suicide. I gave her these lyrics in an E-mail. It really helped her out....
Would it be so odd if this song were really about Jesus? I'm not saying one way or the other, but just think about it. The facts are as follows: 1. Michael Portney was involved in Alcholics Anonymous. 2. AA believes that faith in a loving God is an important step for recovering from alchohl addiction. 3. As a result Michael Portney is still in to process of writing 12 movements dedicated to the AA's 12 step program (the final movements will probably be on the album after Systematic Chaos). 4 The first of set of movements is My Glass Prison which ends with the lyrics:

Again I'm not saying one way or another. All I'm saying is stop trying to deny the possibility that this song could be about God. Considering the history of DT it very well could be. Then again it might not.
As for me, when I hear this song, it does sound as if Jesus is speaking to me through DT. But that's just because I'm listening to the song out of my perspective that I have recieved from my faith. You do the same when you listen to the song. The song has deep meaning to me though because of what I believe.

For me, this is a Divine intervention, God, a spirit showing you the way, in case the human help wasn't enough. It's a great song, just like any other DT song...
A very U-2 inspired song. A very uplifting one. Sounds like the opposite of Never Enough meaning-wise. For all the fans that has stood by DT through each album.

I disagree. The verse "For every sign I recognize; Another one escapes me" means that this isn't an omniscient God or a follower of God speaking. More likely, it is a person to another person.<br /> <br /> All the bible verses are meaningless coming from different books and not being in any kind of biblical order. Heck, I could find bible verses that make Slayer songs sound like they're about being with God.

FYI Iboseth. Every member of DT has admittedly said they're Christian. A lot of their songs refer to God, Jesus and encouragement. Their all Christians playing music.
worst song on the album octavarium its not that good not that much guitar solos and most songs are very simple i'd rather listen to six degrees or train of thought that listening to octavarium.. it ok though
It's a rare more simple song, i disagree from hank comment up there, i think it's a pretty 80's U2 inspired, but they did not failed.
And a song doesn't need 20 million notes per second solos, or progressive stops to be a great song, i hope i see this song in next sunday gig.
I walk beside you it's a more catchy song for those people who says Dream Theater only can do crazy song, with no ending.
